Melissa Leo here
John Thompson
Remember me? It was only a year ago I was an Oscar Winner? I thought I'd be a gay icon by now. What gives?

Melissa, you're great. Not only do I remember you from Homocide, but I just watched Red State last night. You were great again!
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 1, 2012 1:55 AM |
I've always liked her. She should've won for Frozen River.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 1, 2012 2:03 AM |
Put a comb through that hair and then we'll talk.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 1, 2012 2:03 AM |
The Oscar was fine, dear, but we prefer a bit of fabulous thrown into the mix as well.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 1, 2012 2:25 AM |
I enjoyed your performance as a drug-addicted mom in "Predisposed." Hope someone picks up the film.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 1, 2012 3:32 AM |
I've never even heard of Melissa Leo...
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 1, 2012 3:34 AM |
"Homocide???"
Yes, a little seen police procedural featuring officers in the Fabulous Victims Unit of the SFPD.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 1, 2012 3:38 AM |
Honey, you're no Judy Garland.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 1, 2012 3:45 AM |
I still want to be on magazines showing my cleavage. Why no takers?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 1, 2012 4:10 AM |
"Homocide???"
Actually, it was "Homicide: Life On The Streets". It was an NBC series about Baltimore cops in the Homicide division. It never did much in the ratings but did have a rabid, fanatical cult following. It did feature some great acting. It stayed on seven years, amazing considering how mediocre its ratings were. Other regulars on the show were Richard Belzer, Ned Beatty, Andre Braugher, Yaphet Kotto, Kyle Secor, Daniel Baldwin and Reed Diamond.

It was filmed in my home town of Baltimore, and I was an extra in several episodes. It was a really gritty show, and had some of the best acting of any primetime procedural drama. And Reed Diamond was hot.

Jackie Weaver deserved your oscar.
And you should have been forced to give it back after that dreadful display on stage while accepting it.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 30, 2012 9:23 PM |
Melissa Leo is great. If anyone has any doubts, watch Frozen River.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 30, 2012 9:37 PM |
She was very, very funny on LOUIE.
But she turned a lot of people off with her mega-campaigning for the Oscar last year, and she's neither young nor easy on the eye. Perhaps she could make herself a little more viewer-friendly?
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 30, 2012 9:44 PM |
Thanks R14. Melissa was great as Linda Warner on AMC.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 30, 2012 9:47 PM |
You're too tacky. Even for the gays.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 30, 2012 9:50 PM |
LOVED you on Louie. L-O-V-E-D. Totally ballsy, brilliant performace.
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 30, 2012 10:01 PM |
She's a character actress. Very few of them become big stars. She's very weird and ordinary-looking; not star material. But she's won an Oscar; I'd say she's done pretty well.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 30, 2012 10:01 PM |
Still here, gay bitches.
Where's my next job? Well?
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 18, 2015 5:16 AM |
Didn't she adopt some gay kid when his parents threw him out of the house? Or was that someone else...
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 18, 2015 5:18 AM |
Missy Pooh, you won that year when Anne Castaway and He Whose Name Shall Not be Mentioned "hosted." Your F bomb was so rehearsed.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 18, 2015 5:22 AM |
Frozen River is heartbreaking. Who did she lose to that year?
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 18, 2015 5:24 AM |
Oh, for fucks sake, watch the clip from Louie. That can't have been easy to film, but, goddamn, there was some commitment to character in that scene.

She really skanked up the Oscars, that I remember.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 18, 2015 5:39 AM |
She is a terrific actress. I don't care a out her antics campaigning for recognition. Another movie to watch is Francine, about a woman released from prison.

Í liked your tits in the 1985 film Streetwalkin'
Obviously an ANGEL rip-off.

I do think she was great in smaller films like Francine and Frozen River. I like her a lot on her Louie appearances and she was very natural on Tremé.
But boy she can ham it up. A lot of her recent vehicles have been in this vein (that atheist lady biopic, Novitiate, Prisoners, the LBJ movie starring fellow ham Bryan Cranston). It's like she's two different actresses. Her "for ME???" Oscar moment too was incredibly forced and quite frankly ridiculous. Not just the rehearsed f-bomb but when she TOOK Kirk Douglas' cane away from him as he was to walk off stage and danced around with it!?!?!?!? Bizarre.
It also seems like Ann Dowd kind of stole a lot of her career momentum. A lot of those roles are the 'Melissa Leo' type and they're going to her (and J. Smith Cameron). Leo needs to get on another quality TV show, maybe one where she isn't the main character. And keep looking for indie gems rather than Oscar bait projects.

She did a great L&O as an evil mother who catfished someone while posing as her pretty daughter. A funny scene had Detectives Lupo and Bernard reading the emails acting out the roles. Leo committed fully to the skanky, evil bitch character. All in.
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 21, 2020 9:31 PM |
I like her in Treme. She and John Goodman made a sweet couple.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 21, 2020 10:37 PM |
I liked her Oscar win because it’s rare for a character actress who isn’t a household name to take home the gold these days. Plus, she was good in The Fighter, even if I would have voted for the brilliant and much underrated Helena Bonham Carter instead.
As for her aggressive campaigning, most actors do it (Allison Janney would show up to the opening of an envelope with a plate of homemade cookies if it would help win her an award); Leo was just a little clumsy in her execution.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 21, 2020 10:47 PM |
R40. I like Allison Jamey, but no way did she deserve the Oscar for I, Tonya. Lauriertcalf was robbed—and she played a real person, not an arch camp stereotype.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 21, 2020 10:50 PM |
An Oscar don't mean much these days. A nomination means even less. Call me.

Melissa is not glam enough to be an icon.

I don’t even remember her from a year ago. 🤷🏻♂️
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 18, 2020 12:18 AM |
I'm pretty sure one of these earlier posts from 2015 is mine. I think...
Anyway... this thread just sadly underlines the utter disposability of movies and TV shows, even prestigious ones. I barely remember Leo's Oscar win, much less whatever film she won it for. Posters here mention movies and TV shows that I've forgotten ever existed. And yes, her appearance on LOUIS was unforgettable--except that LOUIS, the highly regarded series, is off the air, is widely forgotten, and is potentially "cancelled" in the wake of Louis CK's downfall. I'm not sure he'll ever be back.
Popular culture now has the lifespan of a fruitfly.

R48 the series is so forgotten that you can’t remember it was called “Louie.” Guess that’s what he gets for jerking off with the door open.

Thanks for reminding us that Louis CK helped unleash the unattractive, untalented, and unappealing Pamela Adlon on an unsuspecting world, R49.
Still canceled.

R50 THAT’S MY PURSE! I DON’T KNOW YOU!

Melissa, the biggest change since you started this thread 8 years ago is that people are even less interested in you. I thought you did a great job on Frozen River and with that, you should have quit the biz.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 19, 2020 6:25 PM |
Leo is also a good rebuttal to the conventional DL wisdom that highly regarded character actors (particularly middle-aged and older) somehow "have it made."
They don't. They hustle for work as much/more than their younger peers. They audition for roles that go elsewhere. They scramble for a couple of days guest work on a series. They are all too easily forgotten in a business that still worships youth and beauty and newness.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 19, 2020 6:48 PM |
I don't think that quite describes Leo. She's not a day player.

R53 Where did you come up with that piece of 'conventional DL wisdom'? I'd appreciate a couple links. I've never seen the claim on any thread. Ever.

Horrible Oscar campaign. Shameless hussy.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 14, 2020 7:56 PM |
Sorry to high jack Melissa’s thread, but Pamela Adlon is too short. Is she three feet tall? She looks like someone who will never find pants that fit and will always just come up to her co-stars bellybuttons.
