McCall's Magazine
James Williams
I am still reeling over the name change to Rosie.
How have you managed?

I love Rosie, but she was a real dumb cunt with that magazine. She was on for a year then changed it to Rosie then backed out because she couldn’t have 100% control of the content... I mean how many articles can you write about Birkenstocks and incest?

WWD Media has an in-depth article detailing which female celebrities sold the most magazines when they appeared on the cover. According to numbers reported by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, the list of the most salable included Angelina Jolie, Lauren Conrad, and Victoria Beckham.
Some of the least salable cover faces for fashion monthly titles included Nicole Kidman, Carrie Underwood, Rachel Weisz and of course, Rosie O’Donnell. Jessica Simpson sold the most Glamour magazines with her June issue selling 775,000 copies, while Nicole Kidman’s December issue was the worst at 460,000 copies.

As a baby gay, I loved McCalls Crafts. The things one could do with old pie tins and computer punch cards!

The name change to Rosie ended McCall's the same way the internet extinguished our music and bookstores.

The standard Grandma's house/Mom's friend's house magazine.

The change to Rosie, talk about clueless to your demographic.

As a kid I used to love looking through mom’s magazines that came to the house every month. McCall’s, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, Good Housekeeping, Better Homes and Gardens. They all seemed similar to me, though Better Homes had more stuff about decor and cooking and the like. I must have been exposed to hundreds of pages of adverts for Eve cigarettes and Virginia Slims that appeared in them.

Nothing says Fourth of July weekend like an ice-cold Diet Rite, Capri Ultra Lights and the latest McCall's.

We were a Good Housekeeping household. My dad did most of the cooking and he hung onto a collection of Thanksgiving recipes. One of these years, I'm tempted to recreate the entire menu.

I had no idea it had been around since 1897 - and was established under a different name even before that (in 1873, as The Queen)
That name alone has to make it the DL ladies magazine of choice!
