Lady Gaga vs Katy Perry
John Thompson
I love how Katy’s “Teenage Dream” and “Prism” eras absolutely beat the shit out of Gaga’s “Born This Way” and “Artpop” eras.
I didn’t know “I Kissed A Girl” went to number one yet alone for a few weeks straight.
I remember when “California Girls” came out and was an instant smash. She released it for summer. Smart.
Sad neither can generate a massive hit anymore, outside of Shallow I suppose.

Katy had a few years where her singles were huge. But she's not in Gaga's league. Not even close.

I also forgot they both came out at the same time and both have always been rivals in the industry because they both came out at the same time and their albums are always released near each other

Gaga is the better artist, but Katy has had more hits and number 1s.

Gaga, Katy, and the rest of the world have moved on but a handful of sad elder gays can't stop hating on things that happened decades ago. It keeps them distracted from the horrors of their personal lives.
OP is the creator of multiple "I hate Sex and the City" threads, of course.

Katy Perry relied on her perky tits and the magic of Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Now that she's old and lost her svengalis. She's old news. Lady Gaga still has years to get hits and the talent to stay for a while.

Two whores that can't sing

R8, Gaga has proven time and time again that simply isn't true. You're an idiot.

Katy’s Teenage Dream is better than anything GaGa did

Gaga can sing but her issue is she needs better music and stop overexposing herself. She really peaked creatively with her first two albums. She wanted to be edgy or artistic like eMadonna or Grace Jones but she's more mainstream diva like Cher or Whitney.

Rihanna has better music than both. An album of her best hits or ANTI destroys Teenage Dream and The Fame alone.

Chart wise Rihanna is bigger than all the post 2000 pop girls. And it isn't really close.
Then it's Taylor, Adele, Gaga.

Gaga comes off as a mega bitch. I'd rather hang out with Katy. She doesn't take herself so seriously.

I thought that too, R15. But I was bored and watched her Netflix doc during the pandemic. She's seems really sweet actually. And those in the industry (beside Madonna) who've worked with her seem to love her.

Actually of all the pop girls of that era, Gaga is the one with the most recent #1: Rain on Me, which btw recieved critical acclaim and won a Grammy. I seriously doubt Rihanna will release music soon or ever again. She's insanely rich and is enjoying her money too much to actually care about music anymore.
Gaga is the one who seems like will have a very long career a la Steisand. She's an Oscar winner too.
Katy is over.

Also both (Gaga and Katy Perry) have the exact number of BB Hot100 top ten hits: 14.
Katy has 9 #1s and 5 top ten. Gaga is the exact opposite, she has 5 #1s and 9 top ten.

That's so weird R18. I was around 30 during Katy and Gaga's peak. While I do remember Katy being around and her songs in the background, I don't think of her as being even close to Gaga in terms of buzz or popularity.
Eh, I guess it's like the Janet/Madonna rivalry. Hard to remember, even if you were there.

Gaga was a tour-de-force who branched into acting and doing jazz albums. She wanted to be the next Madonna and pushed the image of being a self-made auteur-type. Katy was more of an old-school pop star who was a cipher for producers. I'm not surprised Gaga outlasted Katy. But Rihanna was much bigger than both.

Neither can touch Connie Francis.

Just like the Britney/Christina rivalry and Rihanna/Beyoncé rivalry. The stans pit divas against each other like it's a boxing match and ignore they can prefer one's music over the other without attacking another's taste

Rihanna was only pinned against Beyoncé for a short period. By 2010 she was compared to GaGa/Katy/Kesha, who also took off at the same time as GaGa and Katy

Their careers have been almost identical, stats-wise. Katy has sold slightly more in the US, but I think Gaga has sold more worldwide. They both have an estimated net worth of $330 million. They both performed at the Super Bowl halftime show, with Katy's getting the higher ratings. They both have lucrative Vegas residencies.
The difference is that Gaga is still a huge and relevant artist, both in terms of music and movies. A Star is Born was massive, and she just wrapped a high-profile movie with Ridley Scott. The song Rain on Me went #1 in the US, and went #1 on more global charts than any female song in several years, and won a Grammy for Gaga and Ariana. Whereas, Katy's music career is over.

Yeah, Gaga definitely won the war, that's for sure R24.
And she should. Whether she's your thing or not, she's undeniably talented. Gives her more chances to succeed. The second teens and 20 somethings aged out of Katy's top 40, manufactured pop? She didn't have the talent to find success or relevance elsewhere.

She makes like $25 million a season on American Idol. Katy is doing fine.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 1, 2021 1:51 AM |
Great.
Another misogynistic thread where we pit two pop divas against each other, when in reality they are not enemies and there is room for both of them in the charts.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 1, 2021 1:57 AM |
R26, totally. No one was saying Katy is strapped for cash.
But her music career is all but over.
