K.T. Oslin has died

Writer William Jenkins

She looks out of place in that 80s photo. It appears to be summer, but she's dripping in fake pearls and cloaked in denim. She looks like someone's trashy red state mom visiting her kid at college.

by Anonymousreply 2December 21, 2020 7:08 PM

That's awful, OP. My mother had Parkinson's for thirty years, and it wasn't pretty. I didn't know K.T. Oslin had been diagnosed. I also didn't realize she was older than both my parents (though only for a few years).

This was always my favorite song from her.

80s Lady didn't live to see 80

by Anonymousreply 4December 21, 2020 7:33 PM

Who the hell is this person?

by Anonymousreply 5December 21, 2020 7:37 PM

80’s Ladies is an all time great.

She had one of my favorite lines ever in any song:

don’t kiss me like we’re married; kiss me like we’re lovers

by Anonymousreply 7December 21, 2020 7:52 PM

For all the assholes too lazy to click the link or those simply just an asshole with your “who” comments (which are rarely funny even though you think they may be), Oslin was the first female songwriter in CMA Awards history to win Song of the Year, which was a big deal at the time.

by Anonymousreply 8December 21, 2020 7:56 PM

Come next Monday I’m gonna give up on you.

by Anonymousreply 9December 21, 2020 7:59 PM

She also had a minor dancefloor hit in 2001.

She was, like Mary Chapin Carpenter, part of the late 80s country/pop scene.

She wrote this song, which Dusty Springfield recorded - this is one of, if not Dusty's very last performance before she died.

KT Oslin would be the new DL favorite....

by Anonymousreply 16December 21, 2020 8:36 PM

I didn't know Donny and Marie hadda 'nother sister!

by Anonymousreply 17December 21, 2020 8:37 PM

what a great lady KT Oslin was

by Anonymousreply 18December 21, 2020 8:40 PM

We've been educated.

We got liberated.

And had complicating matters with men.

Oh, we've said "I do"

And we've signed "I don't"

And we've sworn we'd never do that again.

Oh, we burned our bras,

And we burned our dinners

And we burned our candles at both ends.

And we've had some children

Who look just like the way we did back then.

by Anonymousreply 19December 21, 2020 10:26 PM

I was a fuckin bitch in the 50s. A big assed druggie in the 60s. And more than eggs got laid in the 70s. Now I’m a sour assed cunt in the 80s from all of this shit!

by Anonymousreply 20December 21, 2020 10:37 PM

"Now I’m a sour assed cunt in the 80s from all of this shit! "

and i'll write great songs about it, just like men do. except i'll be the first woman to get recognized for it.

by Anonymousreply 21December 21, 2020 10:38 PM

What a shame. I loved her song “Come To My Window.”

by Anonymousreply 22December 21, 2020 10:42 PM

RIP K.T.

A great singer and songwriter. This is my favorite.

I always confuse her with K. T. Couric.

by Anonymousreply 25December 21, 2020 11:20 PM

She wasn’t your typical country singer, before breaking it big in country she was living in NYC trying to make it in Broadway. She didn’t hit it big in country until she was 45.

Also, relatable to Dataloungers as her Greatest Hits was subtitled ‘Songs from an Aging Sex Bomb’.

r23, that's 80's Ladies, her 80s masterpiece linked at r6.

In an interview, she talked about how as a woman in her mid 40s who was finally topping the charts as a singer and songwriter, she was like swine being selected for the safe line. Or, as she put it, "I was the last sow they let in that chute".

by Anonymousreply 27December 21, 2020 11:23 PM

R27 She would have never made it nowadays. The public demands every new star look like homeless hookers with money and be under 23.

by Anonymousreply 28December 21, 2020 11:27 PM

Dusty wanted to cover Eighties Ladies in the 1990s. Oslin wouldn't agree to changing the title to Nineties Ladies.

by Anonymousreply 30December 21, 2020 11:28 PM

She had Molly Ivins vibes. Alcoholic, insecurity masked by her extroversion act & her wit, homely but liked some good dick. She was Dyke-adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 31December 21, 2020 11:29 PM

I liked her music. RIP K.T.

She was a lesbian, right?

by Anonymousreply 32December 21, 2020 11:30 PM

She was a sucker for the wrong guy.

by Anonymousreply 33December 21, 2020 11:32 PM

You can always tell if someone has a best friend who's a Beautician. Their hair is always fluffy and fussy.

by Anonymousreply 35December 22, 2020 12:51 AM

She overdosed on hairspray.

by Anonymousreply 38December 22, 2020 1:22 AM

My mom love KT Oslin back in the day. 80s Ladies was her jam.

by Anonymousreply 39December 22, 2020 1:25 AM

I like these lyrics:

*

Hey bartender honey gimme change for a ten dollar bill

Bring in back as stack of quarters, if you will

Cause I'm gonna play every song on your jukebox that makes me cry

Gonna find out how many tears ten dollars can buy

She died of Covid complications I found out. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 41December 22, 2020 1:41 AM

I think she was like Mary Chapin Carpenter, who we all swore was a big ole lez but really wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 42December 22, 2020 1:42 AM

She seems like the type who might have performed at MichFest.

by Anonymousreply 43December 22, 2020 1:43 AM

Like Mary Chapin, KT liked the D.

And she wrote magnificently in pursuit thereof.

by Anonymousreply 44December 22, 2020 1:46 AM

I believe, back in the day, she liked younger men.

by Anonymousreply 46December 22, 2020 1:48 AM

JoBeth Williams can play her in the TV movie.

by Anonymousreply 47December 22, 2020 1:49 AM

She was great. She had a unique voice and could be self-effacing in interviews. And I think it's quite inspirational that she kept after her dreams into her 40s before she finally hit.

She had an album maybe 5-10 years ago that I came across and I really loved it - real country - not the shit they make now. I dug up some interviews at the time - she had made it late in life but was pretty low-key and frugal. She saw changes in the business, called up her accountant and asked "Do I have enough money to retire?" She did - so she did. And she worked when she wanted to. In semi-retirement, she retained her respect in the old school country world and she regained a private life.

I'd say, Covid aside, she had a pretty damned good life.

by Anonymousreply 48December 22, 2020 2:00 AM

[Quote] she regained a private life.

What about her love life?

by Anonymousreply 49December 22, 2020 2:01 AM

She was a fantastic songwriter, a real talent.

She never talked about her love life, but she did have a very emotional discussion with Roan Rivers once about losing her cat.

by Anonymousreply 52December 22, 2020 2:13 AM

Did she lose her cat to Dusty Springfield?

by Anonymousreply 53December 22, 2020 2:14 AM

It was weird when she won best songwriter at the Country Music Association for 80's Ladies. No woman had ever won for writing a song by herself. And she won for a song that wasn't even a huge hit at the time (peaked below #5?). And it wasn't treated as a BIG DEAL like it would have been years later when Gretchen Peters won for Independence Day.

Also, it's a great fucking song.

by Anonymousreply 54December 22, 2020 2:16 AM

[Quote] And it wasn't treated as a BIG DEAL like it would have been years later when Gretchen Peters won for Independence Day.

Gretchen Peters had a better publicist?

by Anonymousreply 55December 22, 2020 2:17 AM

She was one of those singers were you could tell she was really thinking about the song - the emotion came through in her voice. Rosanne Cash and Patsy Cline were like that. My BF is listening to the new Taylor Swift album. It's kind of country. It's actually decent, but her voice kind of sounds the same in every song, regardless of the topic.

by Anonymousreply 56December 22, 2020 2:19 AM

I don't listen to country music and know very little about the genre, but K. T. stole my heart when she referred to the Judds as Wyoming and Nairobi. in an interview.

Hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 57December 22, 2020 2:20 AM

Will she be buried on the family compound in Provo, UT?

by Anonymousreply 58December 22, 2020 2:27 AM

by Anonymousreply 59December 22, 2020 2:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 60December 22, 2020 2:31 AM

Not yet, r60, she's still shimmying.

by Anonymousreply 61December 22, 2020 2:33 AM

I always thought they should've made a TV Drama based on her song on her song "80s Ladies"

by Anonymousreply 62December 22, 2020 2:40 AM

[Quote] Not Osmond you fucking moron.—Marie

I vividly remember 80s Ladies playing the very first time I went to a gay country & western bar, so the song and K.T. have a special place in my heart. The world was a more innocent place back then.

by Anonymousreply 70December 22, 2020 4:20 PM

The 80s? Innocent? In the gay community?!

by Anonymousreply 71December 22, 2020 4:22 PM

She went through a severe depression and survived a quadruple bypass.

by Anonymousreply 72December 22, 2020 4:54 PM

R71 is an Aspie pessimist. We have to wallow constantly in every bad thing or she’s not sufficed. Multiple things can exist at once. AIDS crisis = horrible, Young & new gay = fun & exciting, world pre-Internet = better

by Anonymousreply 75December 22, 2020 5:31 PM

Mary Chapin Carpenter and KT Oslin will always have a special place in my heart.

KT always seemed like a great broad, funny, determined, and liked a good D as much as any of us.

I hope she had comfort in the end.

All of the Broadway queens on this site, and nobody remembers her being in the original cast of "Promises, Promises" (billed as "Kay Oslin") with Jerry Orbach?

Couple that with a buncha Grammy and CMA awards and a half-dozen very-good-to-great albums brimming with excellent material, and you've got one pretty terrific career.

A "great broad," indeed.

I wish we had mature adults writing songs and having hits that are for mature adults in this day and age, but unfortunately that time has passed. Everybody's a pole dancer or a thug now.

by Anonymousreply 93December 23, 2020 2:50 AM

She has the reedy resonant ache to her voice, a bit like Bette Midler. Except KT Oslin stays on pitch.

by Anonymousreply 94December 23, 2020 4:47 AM

It’s really a shame that she never cut an album of American Standards, she would have done justice to some Rosemary Clooney tunes.

by Anonymousreply 96December 24, 2020 2:29 AM

80s Ladies is a great song, very poignant.

by Anonymousreply 97December 24, 2020 2:53 AM

she was real artist and a story teller. Being thin and gorgeous didn't matter. It was about her interpretation of her material that made her shine.

by Anonymousreply 98December 24, 2020 3:31 AM

You're calling her fat and homely?

by Anonymousreply 99December 24, 2020 3:39 AM

But what about her Horse and Cherry tree?

by Anonymousreply 100December 24, 2020 3:42 AM

No, that was another lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 101December 24, 2020 3:43 AM

I really don’t think she was a lesbian. She just had old maid and cool fag hag vibes. I’ve known 2 women like her before, they’re not the prettiest but are smart & witty but love men (A Guy’s Girl, think cool musical theater girl). No nonsense broads. It’s crazy that if a woman doesn’t look like a blowup sex doll nowadays “she must be a Dyke.”

by Anonymousreply 102December 24, 2020 7:24 AM

In June 2015, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. She moved into an assisted-living facility the following year. She died on December 21, 2020, a week after being diagnosed with COVID-19. She was 78 years old.

by Anonymousreply 103December 24, 2020 7:40 AM

I think we can blame K.T.’s passing on Trump

by Anonymousreply 104December 24, 2020 7:41 AM

This is gay forum. You don't have to defend anyone from, heaven forfend, being seen as a "dyke."

by Anonymousreply 105December 24, 2020 7:42 AM

True. Nothing wrong with being a dyke or looking like a dyke. But most gay women are not dykes and don't look like dykes. It's an eldergay term that goes along with Butch and Femme. Not that the concepts don't exist, but it's a perjorative term that doesn't fit the majority of homosexual and bisexual men and women.

My mom says that as soon as Katie Osmond had a hit record, that she got tons of cosmetic surgery to shave off some hard years of living. She was already in her forties but looked older. So maybe that's why some thought she was a dyke? Wynonna looks tough too, but she's a man's girl. Katie Osmond obviously liked the dick and had been around. She had a nice voice. I hope she recovers from COVID.

by Anonymousreply 106December 24, 2020 7:48 AM

Drew, did you phone home to KT before the little one passed?
