Julia Sweeney from SNL
Andrew Hansen
For some reason I thought she died years ago, but according to Wikipedia, she’s alive. Why did I think she was dead? Was I confusing her with someone else?

Well, Sweeney did have cancer. But maybe you're thinking of Danitra Vance?

OP you weren’t confusing her for Chris Farley were you?

Thanks for the reminder, OP.

I saw her one-woman show "Older and Wider" a couple of years ago. Definitely alive.

She's alive, but she got sucked into the cult of organized atheism, so she's no longer funny. Her one-woman shows were touching and funny, but that's a long time ago now.
It's weird how organized those groups are. They meet regularly, have leaders who stand up and speak, and have sets of rules that function as doctrine. It's almost...a religion.
But anyway, that's her identity now. She's a speaker on secular humanism. Lisa Lampanelli quit comedy to be a life coach. Gene Hackman quit acting to write Western novels.

Maybe you're thinking of Jan Hooks, OP. Did a lot of sketches with Phil Hartman.

I love Julia Sweeney. She plays the most repulsive character on Frasier, but you don't hate her because she's Julia Sweeney

R5, you can fuck right off. Atheism is "almost a religion", my ass. BTW, Sweeney is still a engaging, funny, and pithy speaker. OP, you may have been remembering Sweeney had a bout with cervical cancer years ago.

r5 Interesting concept, this secular humanism. A God-less religion built on not being religious. That's like having an anorexics anonymous meeting at a pie-eating contest.

r8 That's who I confused her with. For another layer of confusion, I believe their runs on SNL overlapped a bit.

I lived And God Said Ha. I really miss her appearing on wait wait don't tell me on NPR.

Ignore the religious nuts. They actually beleve in God. Can you imagine anything stupider than that?

Paula Poundstone is also and atheist.

She had a small role on Shrill.

Its Pat. You're thinking of Pat.

“Would you excuse me while I use the restroom? I just had to have that second Dr. Pepper while I was getting ready.”

She was also a memorable side character in an episode of SATC.
She played a nun waiting to get in to see Samantha's cancer doctor.

OP here. I think I was confusing her with Jan Hooks. I definitely remember Sweeney having cancer. I guess that was part of the confusion.

I saw her last live one woman show ever (she announced it from the stage). About a year or so ago. It was in her hometown. As I recall, I think she said that she is just ready to retire from show business. She's probably 64 now, has an adopted daughter, probably just wants to rest. I don't know why we expect TV personalities to work forever, but bankers, accountants, and mailmen get to retire at the normal age..
