My mom, who always had a finely-tuned Gaydar, always said she thought he was gay. She adored looking at him---and Robert Conrad---but thought that his and Conrad's masculinity was "way too over the top." In other words, they were covering up for being gay.

R24 -- your Mom was smart. Conrad had lots of affairs with guys, he was as gay as a goose. I know several people who had unfortunate affairs with him (he was physically brutal to his lovers, all of whom, btw, were tops)

Several friends told me that Penny was also gay and has been HIV positive for years. I believe them.

However, I know Perry. He comes from a very distinguished family; his grandfather was the most famous book editor of all time, his brother was the editor of a major newspaper, etc. He is as straight as it comes. A nice guy, gay-friendly, but totally straight. Perry and Penny (that's what people called them behind their backs) were kind of friendly but despite wishful rumors, there was nothing ever between them.

I don't think Robert Conrad was overcompensating because he had sex with men (which I believe). I think he was overcompensating because he was very short. Most short men, including Tom Cruise, have that outlook.

I never thought Penny was 'over-the-top' masculine. Just masculine. Tom Select was OTT and he always came across as super queeny.
