Jamie Lee Curtis is opening up about a dark period in her past.

The Halloween star, 59, tells PEOPLE that she’s lucky to have survived a secret addiction to opiates that began in the late ’80s.

“I was ahead of the curve of the opiate epidemic,” Curtis says in this week’s cover story. “I had a 10-year run, stealing, conniving. No one knew. No one.”

Curtis has a long family history of addiction. Her father, Some Like It Hot actor Tony Curtis, abused alcohol, cocaine and heroin. Her half-brother Nicholas Curtis died from a heroin overdose in 1994.

The actress says she was prescribed opiates for the first time in 1989 after minor plastic surgery “for my hereditary puffy eyes.” She spent the next decade getting painkillers any way she could. She even stole pills from friends and family, including her older sister Kelly, who was the first person to find out about her addiction in 1998.

My mother was a middle-class frau with access to nothing better than Oil of Olay, which she applied religiously. And at Jamie's age, she didn't have half of those wrinkles and crepey folds.

Although SCREAM QUEENS was overproduced though mostly shitty, she got the GLEE team and FOX to give her a big "return" and it floundered, then flopped completely in S2. I don't know if that's Ryan Murphy's fault or who, but she had a big "comeback" mere years ago with that and it flopped with the public. It's nice she went back to her only cash cow to get a second shot, and it obviously worked out, but the press adulation is a bit nauseating.

I love her to bits. She's bright, beautiful, and she's a marvelous talent (Hollywood legacy too)...she seems like an awesome Mother and wife as well.

Smart, funny, and Adam Ant said (years ago on Howard Stern) she's down-to-earth and was incredible in bed.

I'm glad she beat that dragon.

She didn't get fake tits in the 1990s, r24 -- maybe back in the 70s, but that's doubtful, since they don't look fake in TRADING PLACES. She may have gotten a breast lift, but it probably was an eye lift like she said.

I suspect she hasn't had work very recently because of the addiction. She may not be allowed painkillers for elective surgery anymore. And she definitely has the skin of someone with decades of dehydration under her belt.
