James Cordon Will Leave CBS Late Night Next Year.
William Jenkins
British comedian and talk show host James Corden will exit The Late Late Show on CBS television in 2023 after eight years in the job, a network spokesperson said on Thursday, a departure that may signal a larger shift in the direction of late-night television.

I wish Craig Ferguson would/could return. And his sidekick Geoff Peterson too, of course.

After Meghan and Harry, James Cordon is the third person we don’t want back here in the U.K. Please keep him with our compliments!

I hope Reggie Watts takes over the whole show.

I’ll be honest I thought the first carpool karaoke with Mariah was cute. I didn’t know who he was, I thought he was a chubby gay comedian who knew all the words to Mariah cause he was a fan.
I find them pretty stupid at this point.

Remember when Reggie got emotional, over BLM Protests, during a Zoom call, and James stared at him, stone-faced, while Reggie struggled to find the words, and fell apart, because he was emotionally breaking down?
Well, played, James.
Ned and Stacy season 2 is casting, from what I hear!

Will miss Carpool Karaoke and Reggie

No Reggie. He’ll go off to retire and never be heard from again. Cordens’ spent a number of episodes lately mentioning how unreliable Reggie is. Just quick comments like, Reggie just arrived on set *now*. Others in the band were doing the warmups with Corden til then. The guys’ flaky. Too many hits on the bong is my guess.

Craig Ferguson going on tour later this year, by the way. I love Craig Ferguson.

You needn't think we're taking him back. The best he's getting is a bit role on a Gavin and Stacey reunion, which was basically his entire UK career.

Corden's PR says CBS 'fought" to keep him. Ha! More like the network threatened to Ellen his ass and carpet the media with every Tom, Dick and Harry who has had the misfortune to deal with his shit behavior until he relented and left. At least he was smarter than Ellen and agreed to walk away quietly. What is it with some of these chat show types that are absolute pills behind the scenes?

Supposedly he has been offered to star in a revival of " Forum."

| by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 30, 2022 2:03 PM |
Exactly, R33. He has been making movies. He could still have done whatever he wanted while still having done the show.
If he wanted to do a Broadway show, he could have had a guest host for a period of time.
I don't think it's ratings, either. All of the talk shows are down in the ratings and the top show currently is actually Greg Gutfeld on Fox.
Some are saying it is because Cordon is nasty. But could that be it? Letterman and Carson was also nasty but they had long careers. But maybe the times are different and the networks really do want "nice" guys as hosts?
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 30, 2022 2:04 PM |
R32 I'm wondering as well. I'd have guessed ratings are in the shitter, but I'd think if CBS just fired him, Cordon's team would be so bold to claim they "fought to keep him". They'd just have said nothing and cited wanting to go back to the UK - as they did now - without further details. And as R36 said, I don't think it's being nasty behind the scenes, because that seems to be the show host default.
Who knows... maybe he has a coke addiction problem (might also explain the bts attitude) and thinks getting away from the job will help. Maybe his elderly parents are sick and he wants to be on the same continent if someone dies. Curious what he'll do now though, I have a feeling people in the UK aren't loving him and considering there are petitions out there to get him away from film roles, I'm not sure if this is his future either.
I enjoyed some Carpool Karaoke episodes and contrary to some here I'm not biased against him because he's fat lol, but I think the Late Late show has become pretty boring recently. James Cordon is good in silly slightly absurd stuff like CPK or crosswalk musicals, but he's fairly weak in terms of monologues and such.

Someone should fart in his face. Horrid turd.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 30, 2022 2:30 PM |
R37, like all of the hosts, except Gutfeld, his ratings aren't spectacular. But he does have massive YouTube numbers due to his musical bits like Carpool Karaoke. Plus, he is on so late so I think ratings is less of a consideration in his time slot.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 30, 2022 2:40 PM |
Bill Carter talks about how ratings for the nightly talk shows aren't as much of a factor anymore for the networks in deciding whether to keep the shows or their hosts around.
He ways the reason why the networks are keeping the nighttime shows anyway is because the shows are not that expensive to produce and what would they put in their time slot anyway if they got rid of them? It's not like a new host is going to make much of a difference to the ratings so what is the point of changing hosts? Plus, he says that the networks have found other ways to get some value out of the shows like using the show hosts as the face of their networks. Like when they are trying to sell ads to advertisers, they have the hosts make appearances at meet and greets and to entertain the ad execs:

Media reporter Bill Carter joins Matt to talk about Jon Stewart’s struggling talk show on Apple+, why the modern late night talk show isn’t working, and what these shows mean to their respective networks

There was a Gavin & Stacy reunion special some time ago. Loved the original show, but found the reunion special rather somber and drab.
I find James Cordon just smarmy and sleazy. He acts like he's such a goofball, but you get the sense there is a very mean streak bubbling underneath the surface. Like with Ellen DeGeneres.
Remember when he got off on Patrick Stewart, of all people? Sure, Patrick "started" it by putting Cordon on the spot for acting like a dick behind the scenes ...

It's dizzyingly shallow and boring. And the format of his fat ass sitting breathlessly on the edge of his chair while one or more people squirm on a couch to his left... has me turning the channel. He's the gayest straight man on Earth.

Hopefully he'll leave the country too. I just can't fathom how that guy got as far in show business in the US as he has.
| by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 30, 2022 6:43 PM |
It's always about money. Probably he wanted more or to renegotiate.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 30, 2022 7:59 PM |
What R56 said. Cordon's team have been putting it out in the media that he wanted to go back to the UK for months now, it was a negotiation tactic for more $ and it looks like it ultimately didn't work.

I agree. I’m a huge fan of Gavin & Stacey, but the reunion was not good. Part of it is because Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb are older and didn’t seem to have the energy they originally brought to the show.

I like Bill Carter but he is insane if he thinks CBS would pick either Samantha Bee or Amber Ruffin to replace Corden.
The reality is the main audience for these shows are older, white people. They are the ones who actually make up the dwindling number of viewers who watch these shows every night when they are broadcasted instead of just looking at YouTube clips. These viewers don't want "change". They continue to watch these shows because it is a habit that they developed when they were younger.

R60 - Oh, honey. No. Older white people are asleep long before those shows come on the air.
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | May 1, 2022 12:27 AM |
R61, true, they are asleep but the TV is often still on and so they are counted officially as viewers.
| by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 1, 2022 12:31 AM |
R60
No, that's not true at all.
My building is full of "older white people" and am here to tell you many of them are up at 11PM and well past. Know this because you can hear them moving about (NYC apartment walls are notoriously thin), plus of course they have television blasting.
Many people find sometime in middle age and or by time reach say their 60's they either need less sleep, and or have problems doing so through the night. If they go to bed very early often are up again by 2AM or so, so they remain awake later than many expect.
Those residing in care homes or other institutions are another matter. Often schedules (or dictates) of staff influence when they must get into or otherwise go to bed.
