I find it terrifying when people are suddenly diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and are dead within weeks, or even days. It happens more often than you might think.

And sometimes they don't even receive the diagnosis. I know of a 26-year-old woman who had been a bit ill with what she assumed was a persistent cold or flu. One weekend, she collapsed and died. The medical examiner eventually determined that the cause of death was leukemia.

It is awful, and obviously being diagnosed with less severe cancer and regaining a functional life is better. But, I think the quick diagnosis to death is better than an incurable cancer or other disease that creates a prolonged decline and months or years of pain and suffering.

She's a cautionary tale, that's certain. Ruined her face with meth, and just when she was really recovering, she found out she was ill. Terrible.

My friend was similarly diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer out of the blue, as a previously healthy 32 year old with no family history. Cancer is awful. RIP.

I have no link to verify the truth off this, but my mother's oncologist told us that the younger a woman is when breast cancer develops, the more virulent it is and the likelihood of a woman diagnosed in her 20s and 30s surviving 10 years is almost unheard of. I am not sure if it has something to do with the fact that young women are teeming with estrogen which feeds the "female" cancers, but that seems plausible.

Obviously older women have little estrogen naturally in their bodies(comparatively speaking.
