Jackie Hoffman
Andrew Hansen
An appreciation thread for the rubber-faced, 50-something, self-loathing comedienne

In addition to roles in Feuds, her one-woman shows at Joe's Pub, and Broadway's The Addams Family, Hairspray, and now Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, perhaps Jackie's greatest work is her video blog for Broadway.com documenting the full run of The Addams Family on Broadway.

I was delighted to see Jackie and Andrea Martin play off each other on an episode of "Difficult People."
They are the two finest character actresses working today. And similar in some ways.

I get Jackie Hoffman mixed up with the late Jackie Burroughs, another very funny character actress.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 26, 2017 5:45 AM |
She is the closest thing to Datalounge in human form. Needy, cunty, funny, and not remotely attractive.

She's great in "Kissing Jessica Stein."

She was so fucking funny on Andy Cohen show a while back.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 18, 2017 4:24 AM |
A little of her goes a long way. I hate that she always bitches about the shows she's been cast in as if being a working actress on Broadway is the worst fate in the world.

R5 Ha! Perfect
I love Jackie. Saw her one woman show years ago during her Hairspray run and have seen 2 more of her one woman shows and all her Broadway roles expect her current. Can't bring myself to sit through Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Her video blog filmed during Adams Family is fantastic (It's on YouTube) and a good example of her humor. Her podcast appearance on Judy Gold's "Kill Me Know" is great too.
She's certainly an acquired taste. She's too dark and gritting on the surface for a lot of people. As someone who was raised amongst sickly sweet, totally phoney Southerners I have always been attracted to that New York directness that Jackie has in spades.
I've loved the moment she's had with Feud. Realistically she's hard to cast and her career will probably just chug along nicely as it is now. She's also featured in Take My Nose Please, a plastic surgery doc doing the festival rounds at the moment. Though you wouldn't know to look at her she had a facelift just before Feud as part of the documentary.

Jackie Hoffman Live at Joe's Pub is sidesplittingly funny. Such clever lyrics.

Jackie is married to a much younger hunky man.

I thought she was a lesbian?

She was hilarious playing various outrageous character roles in "On the Town" on Broadway a few years ago. I also heard her sing "Shy" from "Once Upon a Mattress" which she did, and she had a really good strong belt.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 18, 2017 5:13 AM |
Definitely not a les. She mentions the busboys and immigrants she banged in many of her songs. In her Addams Family blog she has a picture of her husband Steve on her dressing room table and he appears in an episode. He is indeed 10-15 years younger, cute boyish face.

Loudmouthed jew lands a shy, younger musician jew. Good for her. I love her "I don't give a shit but actually I DO! attitude."
Love the DL comparison!
It has been noted that had she been active in the 60s she would have been a television staple. Series roles, guest star turns on variety shows, etc.

Better r16. Her husband isn't a Jew. He's a goy from Michigan. Lol.

The Broadway.com vlogs were divine. Every so often "Jackie's got fan mail" will pop into my head. Loved that she didn't necessarily spare Nathan Lane or Bebe. Bebe was actually a good sport, Mr. Lane was not and you could tell from the bits of him she captured that he is not fun to work with.

You're not Buddhist-
"You're JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH!
You're still JEWSH!
You're JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH, JEWISH!"
Oh, Jackie Hoffman Live at Joe's Pub was hilarious.

Her tweets about Dean are hilarious.

Jackie is a good one. Despite the world weary, jaded exterior she's actually a lovely woman. She takes care of her 90 something year old mother and after 5 show weekends she's on the train to Long Island to see her. I was pulling for her tonight because she's as far from 'Hollywood' as the rest of us. She'll be gutted that people took her tweets tonight seriously. Those who know her will know that is her humor and its in line with what she usually tweets. Her nomination is a little bit of an "engine who could" Cinderella story and I hope the tweets don't overshadow that. A 56 year old bit part actress who's been out there for 30 years (she was in Second City with Colbert 30+ years ago) to end up in a category with Dern is not too shabby.
If she was better known her backstage vlog would have been a DL fav. It's great.
*Disclaimer, I'm just a show queen who worked with her a few times. If ever bodies are found under her floorboards disregard the above.

Hoffman was in Kissing Jessica Stein and Garden State. She was in Curb as the ugly girlfriend that the blind dude thinks is gorgeous. She was the mother in the new normal. She's in Difficult people as Billy's sister in law.

She is NOTHING like Jackie Burroughs. That broad was flat out nuts. Loved Burroughs in a little seen film entitled THE HOUSEKEEPER, but she and Hoffman are nothing alike.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 18, 2017 8:23 AM |
The gif of her screaming damn in hilarious. I missed it during the broadcast. She knew coming in she didn't have a chance at a win but I love that she's milking the whole thing for what it's worth.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 18, 2017 3:58 PM |
She's an acquired taste, but I love. Anyone who follows her knows this is her humor. Her CD is hilarious. The first time I ever saw her was in an off-Broadway play called "Straight Jacket" about a 50's closeted actor. Her line readings were so hysterical, I followed her in everything since.

Jackie and Mary Testa were great in Xanadu as Kira's cunty sistahs. They and DL fave Cheyenne Jackson's enormous thighs were the highlight of that show.

Jackie went after Alan Rickman when she hosted the Broadway Audience awards a few years ago. It made last nights tweet look like a nursery rhyme.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 18, 2017 5:02 PM |
According to her Twitter she's been keeping a diary about last night for a Vanity Fair article.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 18, 2017 5:11 PM |
She won big last night, she's a master self promoter. Davis and Wright her costars were in the same category, Judy never showed and I haven't seen any coverage of Alison Wright. Jackie got her name out there big time. For a native NYer she was positive about her stay in LA filming the show (she lived in my building). I suspect if her mother wasn't in the picture she would move out here.

There are few comedians who get away with the "let me let out a shriek" comedy--Nathan Lane and Mario Cantone come to mind. Jackie Hoffman is right up there.
Their comic timing is just perfect

| by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 19, 2017 9:27 AM |
If only she knew how misunderstood she was on DL!
She can't be worth that much. She's had a good Broadway run since Hairspray but in small roles and periods of unemployment between shows. In her vlog she's seen filling out the unemployment forms when the show was closing. Until Fued her screen roles were day player type things. Her husband is a trumpet player so no money coming in there. I hope she strikes now while the iron is lukewarm and banks as much as she can.

Probably gets about 4K per week on Broadway. Her apartment was in the Times recently, she lives in a low income building.
| by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 19, 2017 10:01 PM |
Seems a little high, maybe she'll get a raise now. I'm not into Broadway really but I thought the pay was really low even for better known actors. 4K for her little role is not bad. Add the fee for Feud and she's doing okay.

Jackie and her husband live in a low income building in Chelsea. She was on the waiting list for 12 years before getting in. Not sure how she's still there, she has to be making bank the past few years on Broadway.
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | September 27, 2017 1:26 PM |
Well maybe in the last few years but she was in Second City for years then did off off Broadway plays so these are the first decent paychecks she's ever had and she's close to 60.
| by Anonymous | reply 72 | September 27, 2017 5:53 PM |
R71 low income in NY is actually pretty high. Plus, you only need a low income to get in. Once you're in, they don't check yearly to verify.
