Is anyone here still on AOL?

Writer Daniel Martin

Just curious. Does it still exist?

If yes....I didn't know if they have chat rooms still, or whether it's more like Yahoo where it's just a mail client and news/info/search website?

I enjoyed the aol gay chat rooms as a young gayling. Cat-fishing, ghosting, etc was relatively rare back then.

Allegedly scammers who target older people search for individuals with aol and hotmail email addresses. My older ex, who is not the least bit tech savvy, still uses an aol address and gets tons of spam. ("Your system requires this important software update - Click here!" And he does!)

I still haven't used my 500 free hours, OP!

I can believe what I used to $pay$ AOL for monthly unlimited access with my Global Village 28.8 modem.

I need another one of those CDs in the mail so I can start up a new account.

So yeah, I got AOL in the 90s and never got rid of it. I just use it to check the email that's there every 3 weeks or so. (I primarily use gmail now.)

I don't think the chats exist anymore. They used to have a GREAT newsgroup about celebrities. Very dishy and sarcastic. Could tell you assuredly who was gay. Would make DataLounge proud.

I still use my aol email address as my primary email. I made it in high school, but it’s not an embarrassing or unprofessional name so I just keep using it. I get a little spam, but not to much.

I remember when I first got a computer at age 12 my buddy and I would go into the chats and pretend to be hot older women. We thought we were such bad asses fooling all these guys, lol.

Though I of course use gmail for my email, I work off AOL every day because its formatting (favorite places listed vertically on the right rather than horizontally across the top) makes my work easier. Don't really care whether the "cool kids" approve or not.

It wasn't quite the "shooting fish in a barrel" that the glorious early days of Craigslist hookups were, but I do remember a few hot hookups from local AOL chatrooms or even just dudes who searched my profile.

I don't understand why a person even marginally engaged in the world would hold onto an @aol.com email address.
