Is 1,200 calories a day really doable?

Not for the average American.

by Anonymousreply 1December 30, 2018 7:27 PM

For a couple of days, sure. I've probably done that without meaning to, just gotten busy.

For weeks on end? Pretty tough.

by Anonymousreply 2December 30, 2018 7:29 PM

You would have nice, small bms!

by Anonymousreply 3December 30, 2018 7:30 PM

Do IF or OMAD. The weight peels off fast.

by Anonymousreply 5December 30, 2018 7:48 PM

I've done 1000 cal a day for a couple months before. I was in my twenties and didn't have as many responsibilities or demands. I didn't socialize for that time. It's impossible to eat with other people. You can't drink. I also would get preoccupied with hunger and was less patient. It's easier if you aren't having to deal with other people too much. I didn't excercise much during that time. These days my life just doesn't allow for that kind of diet devotion. The pounds did come off fast.

by Anonymousreply 8December 30, 2018 7:55 PM

R5 - Intermittent fasting and one meal a day - in other words - just another series of fad diet/eating disorder.

What will ultimately happen is that the weight goes back on and even more weight is put on that before starting the fad diet. Study after study has shown this to be the case.

by Anonymousreply 9December 30, 2018 7:57 PM

I usually eat less than 1200 kcal a day. Usually 900-1000. If I want to lose weight I have to go down to 600 kcal a day. I'm short and old

I've heard that if you cut your calorie intake too much your body goes into starvation mode and weight loss grinds to a halt. It's your metabolism slowing down in order for your body to protect itself. Any truth to this?

by Anonymousreply 15December 30, 2018 8:18 PM

R15, you will get some spittle-flying defenders of the "Starvation Mode" myth, so do the research yourself.

Plenty of experts (doctors!) say there is no "starvation mode" that "kicks in" when you cut your caloric intake. Old wives' tales from the 1980s.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 16December 30, 2018 8:24 PM

While "starvation mode" may be a myth per se, what generally happens when people try starvation diets is that they restrict too long and then go on a huge, months-long binge, and gain everything back (and more). Unless you're eating disordered, a severely restrictive diet is not sustainable.

by Anonymousreply 17December 30, 2018 8:32 PM

You should be ok on 1200 cals/day if you're not very active and eat nutritionally rich food. Also drink plenty of water. As for hunger, your body should adjust to it . Remember you should only lose 1-2 pounds a week, after the first week or so. If you're losing massive amounts (like on the Biggest loser) you're probably not eating enough.

by Anonymousreply 18December 30, 2018 8:47 PM

My god... 1200 calories??!! That’s enough for a week!!

200 per day. Max!!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 19December 30, 2018 8:54 PM

1,200 calories per day will inevitably lead to some type of collapse, falling off the wagon, epic binge.

by Anonymousreply 20December 30, 2018 9:36 PM

You have to exercise as well. Otherwise, you would probably be starving yourself. Never be hungry and never be full. Drink copious amounts of water. Protein and fiber. Avoind sugar. You'll be fine.

by Anonymousreply 21December 30, 2018 9:45 PM

Thanks r21. I tried losing weight through exercise alone (mostly lifting, some cardio) but it's not happening.

by Anonymousreply 22December 30, 2018 11:16 PM

Why not find out the amount of calories needed to maintain your weight (there are online calculators for this) and then aim for 100 calories less via healthy, nonjunk food? Aim for -200 after a while? Do an hour or cardio each day and burn off another 500?

Eating 1,200 just sounds like an arbitrary figure to dive into and kind of sets you up to fail.

by Anonymousreply 23December 31, 2018 12:00 AM

If you're a tiny person, maybe you could do it.

I am 5'9" and 180 lbs. I could never do 1,200. It's a fight to stop at 2,000 calories.

by Anonymousreply 25December 31, 2018 12:46 AM

The trick is to never go any longer than two hours without eating; something very light (you fat hogs!). In addition to this proven fact, drink a lot of water throughout the day, but not so much that you've flushed away/lowered your electrolytes (which can be dangerous).

Enjoy a balanced ratio of protein, good fats, and simple carbs, in this order.

The reason for the two-hour threshold is because upon letting this period expire, your body will instantly go into 'Starvation Mode' to protect itself, which in turns destroys one's metabolic rate.

by Anonymousreply 26December 31, 2018 12:55 AM

[Quote] The trick is to never go any longer than two hours without eating

Wrong! No such thing as "starvation mode!" That's been debunked by countless doctors and dietitians. Fake News from 1984!

by Anonymousreply 27December 31, 2018 12:57 AM

I've been averaging a little less than1400 calories a day for the past couple of months; Two meals a day with a 16 hour fast between dinner and the next day's lunch plus 30-40 minutes of brisk walking and slow jogging 5 days a week. I've lost 15 pounds.

Once I'm down another 15 pounds, I'm bringing the calories up to around 2,300 calories a day.

Also no booze, no bread, soda nor juices.

Now I just have to figure out how to maintain my weight once I reach my goal.

Oops, sorry I misread at 12,000 a day. Not enough for me.

by Anonymousreply 34December 31, 2018 1:06 AM

I do 1200 calories /day when I get 10 lbs overweight. It is an easy way to get rid of the 10 lbs. I'm 6'2" and weigh 175 lbs, but never over 185 lbs

Learned this technique from a friend. It works.

by Anonymousreply 35December 31, 2018 1:07 AM

I do under 1200 a day every day. Breakfast in the am is an apple, I eat a small lunch, at night I'll have a double Vodka & diet tonic and a decent dinner. No pasta, rice, potatoes. I try to get to the gym 3-4x a week. It's sad but not miserable.

by Anonymousreply 36December 31, 2018 1:18 AM

I did 800 (one meal a day, usually a wrap high on greens with hummus and couscous) a day for a month. I was tired but lost 20 lbs.

by Anonymousreply 37December 31, 2018 1:22 AM

R38 If you’re staying well-hydrated and not eating processed foods you need some added salt to keep electrolytes in balance.

by Anonymousreply 39December 31, 2018 9:47 PM

1,200 a day is totally doable. And 1,400 - 1,600 calories a day or two a week is also okay.

Also, I actually eat 2,000 one or two days a month when I'm dieting because frankly some days I'm just HUNGRY. Plus I've read that eating a day of big calories like that can actually rev your metabolism while dieting.

by Anonymousreply 40December 31, 2018 9:53 PM

I should add I'm a woman. Maybe you need a bit more if you're a guy, especially if you're a younger guy.

by Anonymousreply 41December 31, 2018 9:54 PM

Oh, and on those big calorie days I'm still avoiding the garbage foods.

by Anonymousreply 42December 31, 2018 9:55 PM

You can do it but it takes discipline. Healthy breakfast (eggs are only 50 cals each, David's Killer Bread 60 cals) or granola, greek yoghurt, a few nuts, and fruit, healthy lunch (no fries or chips), and light dinner (salad, chicken). Bolthouse Farms salad dressing is made with yoghurt or olive oil, only 45-60 cals a tablespoon. Protein early in the day for maximum energy.

Plus, exercise and plenty of water. You'll be a svelte stick in no time.

by Anonymousreply 43December 31, 2018 10:03 PM

Ignore EVERYTHING R43 said between "eggs" and "exercise" - that shit in the middle is ridiculous and you won't stick to it.

Meat, eggs, cheese, some low carb vegetables, water, coffee, exercise, Intermittent Fasting 16/8 - that's all you need to know.

You will NOT lose weight with that granola and bread crap.

by Anonymousreply 44December 31, 2018 10:08 PM

R44, you will if you are in a caloric deficit. OP, I suggest you use an online calculator using your current height, weight, and age. And get a food scale. It is incredibly easy to underestimate your calories.

by Anonymousreply 45December 31, 2018 10:11 PM

I did it for months at a time and lost 70 pounds.

You’re hungry at first but then your body begins to burn your fat stores and you stop feeling hungry.

I had a mix of animal protein and vegetables. Little to no bread.

by Anonymousreply 46December 31, 2018 10:14 PM

Lean proteins, no read meat, reduce carbs, lots of fruit and veggies, no soda. I still need my wine. counting calories would drive me insane or obsessive. exercise as much as you can, whether its a walk/jog/hike and weight machines or free weights. WATER!

by Anonymousreply 47December 31, 2018 10:19 PM

Sure. If you're only counting vodka calories. Otherwise, no.

by Anonymousreply 48December 31, 2018 10:25 PM

"Veggies" and "I still need my wine!" at R47.

Fraupocalypse!

by Anonymousreply 49December 31, 2018 10:26 PM

Me, I've committed to skipping the two-three glasses of wine / night. In order to achieve this, I've committed to increasing my work hours to 12 / day.

This means, by the time I return home in the evening, all I'll have time for is a warm shower and some yogurt to tuck me in.

Awake in the morning, repeat.

by Anonymousreply 50December 31, 2018 10:42 PM

Yogurt = CARBS... right before bed = FAT.

by Anonymousreply 51December 31, 2018 10:43 PM

Thank you, R51!

by Anonymousreply 52December 31, 2018 10:48 PM

R49 Hmmph haha. Im not trying to lose weight or become a health/exercise nut, at least not at this point in my life. still have my youth to fall back on. just to maintain some semblance of healthy lifestyle No shame

by Anonymousreply 53December 31, 2018 10:52 PM

LoseIt is a good app OP

Helps you track how much you're actually eating and macros too.

You can scan most foods.

Only downside is if you eat a lot of non-chain restaurant meals you will have to estimate as you don't know how they prepare the food.

by Anonymousreply 54December 31, 2018 10:58 PM

It is absolutely doable, as I've done it before to lose 20 pounds over the course of one summer (I was transferring to a new college for monetary reasons and I didn't want to be known as the heavy one anymore). You just need realistic expectations about the effects. I was fairly so I ate maybe 1500-1600 calories a day and subtracted whatever I had done, activity-wise. I was absolutely wiped and I don't think I'd be able to do something like that again because of the way my time was structured (that whole summer to do only that with a fairly short-term deadline to reach). You are not going to feel like a million bucks and you need to be kind of obsessive about whatever you eat or drink, unless it's water. That said, I've kept the weight off since then and I did learn discipline about not shoveling food into my face, which is a good thing to have. I'm glad I did it but I couldn't do it again.

by Anonymousreply 55December 31, 2018 11:09 PM

But will I have to stop swallowing cum?

by Anonymousreply 57December 31, 2018 11:12 PM

I've lost 60 lbs. since Sept., but my nephrologist's office called today and said my magnesium and phosphorus levels are low (from my latest blood test, which at least had good kidney function results.) They said to eat more dairy and fruits and vegetables. I eat LOTS of fruits and vegetables (although not much dairy) ... what else I can I eat to increase those minerals? Maybe a supplement would work better. (I already take a multi-vitamin.)

by Anonymousreply 58December 31, 2018 11:14 PM

Why do people think counting calories is obsessive but cutting out whole food groups is not? Counting (weighing) calories can give you a handle on proper portions, which is incredibly important when you transition to maintenance. Counting calories allows you to eat what you want, just not as much of what you want. I lost over 20 lbs as a 39 year old woman (when most women start to blame a fictional slowing metabolism on weight gain) by increasing my activity and counting/weighing my calories. I didn’t cut any food groups. I just ate less.

by Anonymousreply 59December 31, 2018 11:53 PM

A straight woman shrieking like a harpy on and on like she's in Weight Watchers at R59.

Sad what DL has devolved into.

by Anonymousreply 60December 31, 2018 11:59 PM

R58, salmon, hummus and more beans beans beans, peanut butter and other nuts, oatmeal, avocado. Lots of good stuff!

by Anonymousreply 61January 1, 2019 12:10 AM

r61 I eat oatmeal every single day for breakfast. I eat peanut butter and nut butters (in moderation, because theyre fattening. Beans, hummus and avocado occasionally. I hate fish, so no salmon.

by Anonymousreply 62January 1, 2019 12:12 AM

Weight Watchers is much more restrictive than simple calorie counting but whatever. If you want to starve and deprive yourself, go ahead. Good luck keeping the weight off.

by Anonymousreply 63January 1, 2019 12:15 AM

Hmm, I don't know then R62. Do you drink alcohol, take certain meds, have digestive issues? You should tell your doctor if you think you're getting enough but not absorbing it.

by Anonymousreply 64January 1, 2019 12:16 AM

No alcohol. I take a statin, allopurinol, and synthroid.

by Anonymousreply 65January 1, 2019 12:17 AM

Maybe one of the meds then? IDK, I'm not a doctor myself! Maybe if you lost the weight you need an adjustment on the meds. Maybe your cholesterol is down since you're in better shape so you could adjust something... Again, I stress I'm NOT a doctor myself so consult yours!!!

by Anonymousreply 66January 1, 2019 12:22 AM

When I was doing keto for weight loss, 1200 calories a day was okay. Keto is great for appetite control because it makes it easier for your body to use stored fat for fuel. I was usually aiming for ~1500 calories/day but sometimes I just wasn't very hungry. Other times I would "binge" on 2000+/day, sometimes I would fast for a day or two. I'm a 5'11" male, for reference, not very active but I do some halfhearted weightlifting and cardio.

Now that I'm almost at my goal weight I think it would be tougher to do 1200 for a long stretch. But this thread is reminding me that I've let too many carbs creep back into my diet in the last few months. Permanent results require permanent lifestyle changes.

by Anonymousreply 67January 1, 2019 12:28 AM

1200 is doable, but you need a lot of green to fill you up.

For breakfast, eat an orange. Fiber, vitamin C, only 80 calories.

A whole bag of raw spinach is just 40 calories, and it will make you feel stuffed. It also has a lot of Vitamin A.

A huge bowl of broccoli is only about 50 calories, and it will make you feel stuffed.

For snacks, eat popcorn (with oil but no butter). Lots of fiber, and filling.

Drink nothing but water. Soda and juice are high in calories.

by Anonymousreply 68January 1, 2019 12:30 AM

I find it easy with intermittent fasting. I only get hungry at night, so I typically just have one large meal a day or split it between lunch and dinner.

by Anonymousreply 70January 1, 2019 12:39 AM

OMAD in 1998, lost 40 lbs, have kept it off for 20 years.

OMAD (Lunch) plus 3 to 4 lite beers in the evening is all it takes. Easy Breezy!

by Anonymousreply 71January 1, 2019 12:46 AM

Eating a bag of spinach every day I will definitely make you lose weight. Think about all the chances for E. coli! Free to substitute Romaine.

by Anonymousreply 72January 1, 2019 12:46 AM

Doable?

I live on less than1000 calories and 20 grams of carbs of day.

by Anonymousreply 73January 1, 2019 12:50 AM

I have one hour and three minutes left to stuff my face before 2019 happens!

by Anonymousreply 74January 1, 2019 3:57 AM

I recommend eating shrimp. Three huge shrimp are only 50 calories. Six should totally fill you for a meal, with some tomatoes and peppers mixed in there New Orleans style.

by Anonymousreply 75January 1, 2019 5:11 PM

I can lose weight if I do 1600 or less and eliminate lots of carbs.

by Anonymousreply 76January 1, 2019 5:35 PM

I wish I had 1200 calories a day.

by Anonymousreply 77January 1, 2019 5:49 PM

R71 Been doing intermittent fasting for 14-16 hours for three months and finding it easier and easier to slip into OMAD. I was never a breakfast person, so that’s a no brainer. Sometimes, I’ll just have chicken broth for lunch and a handful of sprouted almonds and/or apple before dinner.

by Anonymousreply 78January 1, 2019 10:04 PM

i just ate a bag of nachos that's 1400 calories plus a box of chips ahoy and I'm STILL hungry!

by Anonymousreply 79January 1, 2019 10:07 PM

Sugar and carbs will do that, R79. Protein is more filling. You'd do better to eat a handful of almonds and some fat-free Greek yogurt.

by Anonymousreply 80January 2, 2019 1:53 AM

OP here. I started Monday. I haven't been hungry on 1,200 calories a day yet, but I have learned 1) I was eating A LOT -- probably close to 3,500 calories a day -- before this and 2) calories add up quickly!

by Anonymousreply 81January 10, 2019 3:47 PM

According to some online calculator, a woman of my age and height needs only 1200 calories a day. I’ll give it a try and let you know.

by Anonymousreply 82January 10, 2019 3:51 PM

I would be absolutely famished. I am trying to lose 10 pounds, but I get so hungry at night! A lot of people are the other way around. I use granola bars to allay my hunger, but they have calories as well.

by Anonymousreply 83January 10, 2019 3:57 PM

R83 good for you OP. I think that's where most Americans get hung up; we get so accustomed to out eating habits and we simply don't realize that the amounts we're eating are excessive. I had the same issue when I hit my late 20s, kept getting fatter and fatter. My attempt at fixing my weight was exercise without much change to my diet. And it never worked. It wasn't until I started calorie restriction that I realized I was really over-eating. And it's weird how your mind can't fathom the concept of your diet being excessive. But once you actually implement it, it's shocking how much you ate before. I remember back in my 20s eating entire frozen pizzas (probably 1500 right there in one sitting), eating fast food, going out to restaurants, etc.. It never occurred to me that that was excessive. To me that was completely normal. And it wasn't necessarily excessive when I was a young buck still growing with the metabolism of a race horse. But that's not the case now. The simple fact is that for most people out there (office jobs, don't work out, relatively sedentary), anything beyond 1500 cals a day is excessive.

by Anonymousreply 85January 10, 2019 4:15 PM

Thanks r85/r86

Portion sizes make it really easy to eat too many calories.

by Anonymousreply 87January 10, 2019 4:28 PM

Something that's worked for me all my life, although I do exercise and go the the gym- I eat as healthily as possible during the week, and enjoy myself on the weekends. Drinking, going out to brunch, I eat whatever I want. I weigh about 10 pounds more than I did in high school.

by Anonymousreply 88January 10, 2019 5:19 PM

Yes I do, r84. But my glucose is high and I could always use lower blood pressure.

by Anonymousreply 89January 10, 2019 5:49 PM

Yes, it is possible if you quit drinking. I did and lost 30lbs in 3 months. I decided that I would give up the alcohol to allow myself the food I like. Small portions of anything I desire. Seems to be working.

by Anonymousreply 90January 10, 2019 5:49 PM

I was inspired by the movie Carol to go on my "Carol" diet.

She orders for lunch, poached eggs, creamed spinach and a martini. That's a little over 300 calories.

So I stick to a protein, a vegetable and vodka.

Works for me.

by Anonymousreply 91January 10, 2019 6:22 PM

Personally I start really struggling around 1500 calories per day so I don't think 1200 would be doable for me. Easier just to fast at that point.

by Anonymousreply 92January 10, 2019 6:37 PM

I do yoga once or twice a week and have a little 15 minute calisthenics routine I do sometimes, but not really.

by Anonymousreply 94January 10, 2019 6:59 PM

To whomever said that WW is restrictive - it really isn't. It will teach you what is healthy. You will pay more attention to the quality of the food rather than the calories. WW teaches you that, if you want a snack or a drink, there is a price to pay. And, you will need to cut back on other things to make way for such treat.

I just ate three bean chipotle chicken chili with some no fat Greek yoghurt on the side (instead of sour cream). I am satisfied - stuffed, in fact - and it was zero WW points.

by Anonymousreply 95January 10, 2019 7:00 PM

I stuck between 1200 and 1600 calories a day on Weight Watchers. What worked for me was to fill up on as much real food as I could, and skip the diet foods and hacks with artificial sweeteners, etc. I would have oatmeal or a smoothie with about a cup of fruit every day (and still do this even after losing 50 lbs over a decade ago). A huge salad with mostly lettuce, maybe some sprouts or celery for texture, occasionally with some nuts or seeds and/or fruit - sliced apple or pear, orange slices, strawberries. Avocado unless I was using salad dressing made with olive oil. Usually just used some lemon juice. Dinner would be 4 or 5 oz of protein, baked or grilled, about a cup and a half of vegetables or more if I was especially hungry, and a whole or half sweet potato.

I know WW claims that you can eat anything, go anywhere and still lose weight, but for me, it worked best if I stuck to this routine. If I find I am putting on weight, I go right back to this and drop it immediately. I know what makes me fat - bread, pasta, pizza, cheese and booze, and too large serving sizes. I found it hard to believe that a serving of meat is about the size of a deck of cards, and how little 1/2 cup of anything actually is. I can eat A LOT. When I was fat, I was still eating like I was in my 20s and the weight snuck up on me a little at a time until I was a fat 40 year old.

r58 (or whoever said they need more fruit and dairy), try a smoothie made with kefir (or plain yogurt) and a cup of fruit. Either frozen which is super easy or fresh fruit. My favorite is orange/blueberry/banana.

by Anonymousreply 96January 10, 2019 7:13 PM

Thanks for the insight r96

by Anonymousreply 97January 11, 2019 2:09 PM

Yes, on a calorie restricted Keto diet.

On Jan 1 I started the classic Keto. That means tons of fat, some protein, and the only carbs I get come from veggies. I went crazy the first five days. I poured heavy whipping cream in my coffee, I had huge omelets made with heavy cream and Brie, avocado on the side. I ate handfuls of macadamia nuts. I used a blender to whip MCT oil and butter into my first cup of coffee. One very important thing is that I kept my electrolytes balanced by making a drink that contains salt, magnesium, potassium. When people do the Keto, they sometimes feel like they have the flu and give up. It’s because they’re electrolytes are out of balance. The only thing I counted on these first days was carbs, aiming to stay at 20g a day or less.

After five days like this, I began restricting my calories. I’m still on the same kind of diet. Relatively high fat, but no all out gorging on fat. I’ve upped my lean protein, but I’m still only getting carbs from vegetables. I avoid high carb veg like corn, potato, stuff like that. Anyway, it’s been a week at 1200 cal a day and I’m never hungry. I don’t crave sweets, bread, anything like that. I haven’t cheated once, haven’t had a bite of sugar or carbs, other than the small amount of carbs in vegetables. Went out to eat with friends last night to a really good pizza place. I had a salad full of grilled chicken, roasted vegetables, olives, provolone and blue cheese dressing. It was the only real meal I’d had all day because I just wasn’t hungry. Normally, I’d be in agony watching others eat, but the pizza didn’t even look good. This morning I’m not hungry at all. Had some coffee with collagen powder and some MCT oil in it. Again, I won’t eat until I’m hungry, which probably won’t happen until dinner. Another thing is that, when I do get hungry, it’s not a frenzied kind of impulsive feeling like before. I’m able to make the right choices, prepare my food, etc. in the past I would have been so hungry that I’d end up eating in impulse.

Let me know if you have any questions OP. It’s not even been a full two weeks, so I could very well come crying to DL later on. But I’m really happy with how easy it’s been for me to maintain control of my hunger. Btw-I’ve taken a break from exercising for the first three weeks of this diet. When I start back, I’ll make a few changes to my diet. I’m still reading up on the best way to do this.

by Anonymousreply 98January 11, 2019 2:46 PM

r98 how much weight have you lost?

by Anonymousreply 99January 11, 2019 3:04 PM

Sure! I went from 155 lbs to 116 lbs doing 1200 cals for 6 months. Kept the weight off for past year via 1500 cals maintenance. However, I am a 5'2" woman. I am sure it is a lot harder if you're a taller or male.

by Anonymousreply 100January 11, 2019 3:07 PM

It is healthier to eat a vegetarian or vegan meal a few times a week than going on a calorie restricted/starvation diet. Any sort of massive weight loss is just as unhealthy as a weight gain. When a skinny person drop 10-20lbs it is more unhealthy than if a heavier person loses 10-20 lbs. If you are obese and are having heart and other health problems, you have to lose weight but under a medical team supervision because your weight and losing weight are both dangerous for you.

It is normal to fluctuate weight because calorie intake and metabolism is not static.

by Anonymousreply 101January 11, 2019 3:22 PM

Also, fat weighs less than muscle. If you go on a starvation diet you are most likely losing muscle, not fat. Fat is the last thing you will lose.

by Anonymousreply 102January 11, 2019 3:28 PM

I’ve lost six pounds, R99, but I’m sure it’s mostly water weight. I need to lose 30 lbs. I’m 6’ 3” and recently hit 202, the heaviest I’ve ever been. I’ve always had a problem sticking to a diet once the sun sets. I’d be perfect all day, even through dinner. Then end up eating a ton of junk, almost compulsively. I’d feel depressed and keep eating, then commit myself to starting over the next day. And the same thing would happen again. Since starting the keto on the 1st, I haven’t had any night cravings. And I’ve been out late and staying up watching Netflix. This is really significant for me. Even if the weight comes off slower than I’d like, if I can consistently maintain control over myself, that’s going to be better for me over the long term.

I disagree with the vegetarian and vegan diet, R101. I was a strict vegetarian for twenty years. Started when I was 17. Started eating fish when was 37. I was vegan for two years in there. My diet was awful! As a vegan, it was probably even worse. You can eat healthily on vegan and vegetarian diets, but they aren’t inherently healthy. You’d still have to be mindful of calorie intake if you want to lose weight.

by Anonymousreply 103January 11, 2019 3:38 PM

I agree, r103. I've been a vegetarian off and on since my early 20s and I eat too much regardless.

by Anonymousreply 104January 11, 2019 3:53 PM

I've read about plans where you eat 1,200 during the week and then go up to 2,000 on weekends. That sounds doable.

by Anonymousreply 105January 12, 2019 3:39 PM

I've lost a little over 70 lbs in the past year and a half. I know people slag on processed foods, but honestly, I mainly just stuck with Quaker Oats, or Cheerios (plain) cereal for breakfast and lunch with almond milk (unsweetened), and a Lean Cuisine for dinner. Also, completely eliminate soda - regardless of if it's diet soda. I do also eat whole grain toast with peanut butter and some OJ in the mornings as well, or a Jimmy Dean's Delights. Occasionally I will opt for fresh food, such as a salad - and I go ahead and use the full fat dressing.

by Anonymousreply 106January 12, 2019 5:33 PM

R106: Good job! That is under 1000 calories per day. I am surprised you're not hungry mid-afternoon or after dinner. I need a small snack then also to bring calories up to 1200 without being hungry. BTW - fat doesn't make you fat - it fills you up. I don't even count fat, just sugar and calories. It is the excess calories that make you fat.

by Anonymousreply 107January 12, 2019 6:57 PM

The best diet is one you can stick to and that varies from person to person.

Snacking between meals is American's biggest failing--eating too little for a meal and then snacking, especially after dinner.

An app like LoseIt can be a huge help--by tracking everything you eat for a few weeks, you begin to see patterns and understand how much sugar/carbs etc. you are actually eating and what your macros/calories look like.

LoseIt is tough if you eat a lot of restaurant meals not at chain restaurants, but if you cook for yourself, it's got a huge database.

by Anonymousreply 110January 12, 2019 7:14 PM

R109: Diet soda revs up your appetite which makes you eat more than usual.

by Anonymousreply 111January 12, 2019 7:14 PM

R108: All snacks are not created equal. For example, peanut butter and celery or high fiber toast or oat bran - even after dinner will not make you gain weight and can be part of a weight loss program. I know from experience. But yes, high calorie and/or high sugar snacks is a problem.

by Anonymousreply 112January 12, 2019 7:20 PM

Never said they were R112

Just that people don't realize how many calories they are taking in when they snack and they tend to do so randomly--a handful or this or a spoonful of that.

And ANYTHING can make you gain weight if you eat too much of it.

by Anonymousreply 113January 12, 2019 7:23 PM

I'm doing okay sticking around 1,200 calories/day but I really need to work on improving what those calories are starting this coming week. For example last Wed. I ate a PB&J for lunch and then a pasta casserole thing for dinner. Staid within 1,200 calories but those weren't exactly calories well spent. I need more veggies.

Oh well, at least my body has been adjusting to the calorie deficit. I'm getting there I guess.

by Anonymousreply 114January 12, 2019 7:28 PM

How long have you been doing 1,200/day r114?

by Anonymousreply 115January 12, 2019 7:31 PM

Only since Jan 1st. My first week was good, a lot of veggies and a more well-rounded diet. This past week wasn't very well planned and was very carb-heavy. Tomorrow I'm going to meal plan.

I lost some inches my first week. Not as much this week but I know that's usually how week two of diets go. This coming week what I lose will likely start being actual fat so that will be good!

by Anonymousreply 116January 12, 2019 7:35 PM

Good luck, r116! You give me hope, as I'm just finishing my first week.

by Anonymousreply 117January 12, 2019 7:37 PM

The photo of Salmon looks good. I’d eat that if I could make it or have it sent in.

R106 I may steal that Cheerios trick. And the peanut butter toast. I can do that much. Are Lean Cuisines still gross? I remember them as high in sodium. Maybe they’ve improved.

by Anonymousreply 118January 12, 2019 7:45 PM

Thank you OP! Good luck to you too!

by Anonymousreply 119January 12, 2019 7:49 PM

Lean Cuisine's Tortilla Crusted Fish is really good. Healthy Choice's Chicken and Vegetable Stir Fry is good too. Great sweet tooth snacks (when you don't want fruit ;) - Breyers Carb Smart Fudge Bars and Atkins Pecan Caramel Clusters. A lot less sugar/cals and more fiber than regular.

by Anonymousreply 120January 12, 2019 7:53 PM

R102 A pound is a pound, whether it is muscle or fat. Muscle is less dense than fat.

by Anonymousreply 121January 12, 2019 7:57 PM

The best thing you can do for yourself is to stay away from packaged, pre-made meals. It takes less time to roast a piece of salmon with some vegetables on the side than it takes to cook a frozen dinner. I buy pre-cut squash and mirepoix and just dump them on the cookie sheet (lined with some parchment) and toss them in the oven with a bit of olive oil and some herbs. You can also hit the salad bar for pre-cut veggies. Google sheet pan meals and just make sure that everything you roast is healthy.

I try to cook up a pot of chili or chicken stew, which will provide six or seven meals. I freeze half of it in one-serving portions and use the rest for lunches and dinners. I have quite a few ready-to-go meals that are healthy, with less sodium and sugar than frozen dinners.

This weekend, I'm making Swedish turkey meatballs (yeah, insert jokes here) with a yoghurt-based mushroom and onion sauce. I'll serve them over some no yolk egg noodles.

by Anonymousreply 122January 12, 2019 8:06 PM

Once I stopped drinking diet soda all together, and switched to water or unsweetened tea, it was really cool how it "reset's" your taste buds. I can barely finish a coke or diet coke on the rare occasion I do drink it, because it tastes far too sweet. I just brew my own Luzianne tea these days, so much cheaper than buying cases of soda, not to mention having to lug them in your house. I just have a small saucepan that I use to brew the tea in (I use the larger size tea bags) in a concentrated form, then dump it into a pitcher and add more water until it gets to the dilution that I want it.

by Anonymousreply 123January 12, 2019 8:17 PM

R122, I agree it's more ideal to cook your own food, and I do love to cook, and do so as well. On a side note though, I happen to live near a Stouffer's factory, which has a small outlet store that sells Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice stuff super dirt cheap. But even still, the smaller size Lean Cuisines are only around 300 calories each and around 600 mg of sodium and most contain a good amount of veggies in them. I think they also help out with portion control too. I have noticed "meal prepping" has become quite popular these days too.

by Anonymousreply 124January 12, 2019 8:54 PM

Don't eat fake sweets.

All they do is leave you unsatisfied and craving the real thing.

You're better off having a spoonful of real ice cream

by Anonymousreply 125January 12, 2019 9:04 PM

R122 they sell mirepoix? I would buy that and do your sheet pan trick with olive oil and some simple spices. I hope I don’t end up in a smoky cloud with the fire department at my door. I will stand by the oven.

by Anonymousreply 126January 12, 2019 9:48 PM

After my sleevectomy, my dietitian put me on a 1200 max a day food plan. Some days I go over, some days under. But I had to give up most junk food, especially Chinese and pizza.

by Anonymousreply 127January 12, 2019 9:52 PM

When did Chinese become junk food?

by Anonymousreply 128January 12, 2019 9:54 PM

When it got Americanized, R128.

by Anonymousreply 129January 12, 2019 10:04 PM

^^^^This. What R129 said. Chinese cuisine doesn't involve as much breaded and fried stuff as Chinese-American does.

by Anonymousreply 130January 12, 2019 10:09 PM

I'm a chick, but for me yeah. I got my fitness pal app and followed strictly during the week and had a cheat weekend. Went from 148 to 125 in a couple of months. The last 5lbs taking the longest. After a few weeks I realized I wasn't starving and could live and cook quite happily on 1200. Alcohol had to be cut down to one TINY glass of cabernet. I don't think I realized how many calories I was consuming without even thinking about it. Also, it became a puzzle game to see where I could cut calories - coffee with cream means no breakfast, no mayo on burgers, etc.

by Anonymousreply 131January 12, 2019 10:09 PM

R131, do you exercise a lot?

by Anonymousreply 132January 12, 2019 10:29 PM

R128, I was wondering the same thing. I'm predominantly Italian, but all of the local Chinese takeouts where I live offer steamed meals, and at the very least are loaded with veggies.

by Anonymousreply 133January 12, 2019 10:30 PM

As I SAID, the stuff they feed the American public is quite different than what they eat at home.

by Anonymousreply 134January 12, 2019 10:32 PM

R134, I wasn't commenting to be shady towards you in any way fwiw.

by Anonymousreply 135January 12, 2019 10:34 PM

No exercise while strict dieting. I don't think you should exercise to lose weight. Create a calorie deficit with food and start working out after you're near your goal. When I work out I build up an appetite and start thinking things like "I burnt 300 on the elliptical so now I'll eat this". Doesn't work for me.

by Anonymousreply 136January 13, 2019 1:08 AM

You'll crash your metabolism and rebound to a higher weight. If you're going to do that, you'll need to have refeed days, try carb cycling, and go heavy on the fiber.

I get almost zero calories from drinking. I don't drink alcohol or anything with calories. Diet Coke, coffee with Splenda, or water is it for me. I put unsweetened almond milk on cereal or oatmeal (30 calories/cup.) No juice. No sugary drinks. But I still am hugely overweight. I can't imagine ever trying to lose or maintain weight and still be able to eat or drink empty calories (sugary drinks, alcohol, etc.)

by Anonymousreply 141January 13, 2019 1:49 AM

MCT oil is a form of coconut oil that's higher in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) and is a key ingredient in Bulletproof coffee where it's known as "brain octane oil"

by Anonymousreply 142January 13, 2019 1:49 AM

I did a keto/restricted calorie diet last year for about 4 months. 1300 cal/day, 25 g (100 cal) max carbohydrate. This allowed only 2 meals and one snack a day. I wasn't as hungry as I expected, but I frequently creeped up to 1400 cal/day, and got some extra walking in most days. Meal planning and portion control were essential, although meals were simple. Excess fat (MCT oil for instance) would frequently cause an excess of calories. Lots of salads, eggs, meat, green vegetables.

And I lost 20 lbs in about 6 weeks. The first 12 lbs in the first 2 weeks. I looked much better - I discovered what DL's feared "carb face" is as mine disappeared. My stomach flattened, and I began shitting only every other day. But after about 3-4 weeks, I started to feel exhausted and weak.

So I toned it down with some occasional carbs, but still eat low carb most of the time. And I've kept most of the weight off after a year. Started at 197 lbs, now 181 lbs, 5'9".

by Anonymousreply 143January 13, 2019 4:54 AM

Such nonsense on this thread, like "brain oil." H.L. Mencken comes to mind.

There is nothing diet-unfriendly about Chinese-American cuisine. You order protein/veggies steamed with sauce on the side, no rice. No brainer.

[quote]Such nonsense on this thread, like "brain oil." H.L. Mencken comes to mind.

I'm thinking P.T. Barnum.

by Anonymousreply 145January 13, 2019 5:49 AM

The "brain oil" sounds like snake oil, R144 R145, but it's not entirely so. However in the context of the modern keto weight-loss diet, it's a misplaced concept. And if you're a chub, you definitely don't need MCTs.

The ketogenic diet was originally developed for seizure disorders, and it works. The seizure keto diet is much more strict than the weight loss keto diet. But the goal in both versions is the same, which is to cause your body to burn ketones derived from fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.

Constantly eating carbs means your body has a constant supply of energy, and it won't touch your fat stores until there are no more carbs to digest. So put down the cake and chips, fat whores!

MCT oil is quickly digested and absorbed by the body, and can be used more quickly for energy than other sources of fat. However, the brain does not use fatty acids for its metabolism, only glucose and ketones. If you are a fatty and are on a keto diet, you have enough body fat to feed your brain and you don't need MCT oil. MCT oil is probably only useful for people who are running a severe nutritional deficit, or have digestion problems.

by Anonymousreply 147January 13, 2019 6:11 AM

The fact is, after your body sheds fat on a keto/calorie-restrictive diet, it becomes acclimated to the process and requires further belt-tightening to shed those proverbial "last ten pounds." Which means you reduce caloric intake even further or implement calorie-burning exercise.

Why is posting on this site such a f***ng misery? Constant freezing, "datalounge not responding" messages, the thread scrolling at random...it's a pain in the ass.

by Anonymousreply 149January 14, 2019 12:47 AM

One other point on weight loss: almost every study on weight loss has been done on very overweight and largely sedentary people.

That means getting a 350 lb person whose idea of exercise is to walk from their front door to their car down to 250 lbs.

Meaning they may not always translate to people who are closer to normal weight and who exercise or play sports on a regular basis.

What about ready-to-drink protein shakes, which have 160 calories and 25 grams of protein? Are they a viable diet option? I use them as meal replacement but was wondering if I could build a diet plan around them (oatmeal for breakfast, protein shake for lunch, salad for dinner).

No one ever got fat from eating vegetables unless you are deep frying them or covering them in Ranch dressing.

Try potatoes. No oil. Filling and low calorie. Check out Chef AJ. Plant based is the way to . Willl feel satiated and will maintain a calorie deficit.

by Anonymousreply 199May 9, 2019 10:54 PM

And plant based no oil reduces risk of diabetes , cancer , heart disease. Think about it a potato 🥔 maybe has 100 calories and is filling. So let’s say you only ate potatoes , could potentially lose weight on 12 potatoes a day.

by Anonymousreply 201May 9, 2019 11:08 PM

A medium potato has 163 calories. And your body needs more than carbohydrates to survive.

by Anonymousreply 202May 10, 2019 3:25 AM

Though I do like to cook, if I'm trying to drop some weight, I just stick with Lean Cuisine frozen meals for lunch and dinner. Sometimes Healthy Choice soup for lunch instead. They're just convenient in terms of portion control, calorie control, and getting your vegetables in.

Breakfast is usually Quaker Oats Squares in unsweetened almond milk, with some strawberries or bananas. Otherwise it's multi grain wheat toast with peanut butter and some OJ.

I also avoid sugar or diet soda, and just stick with unsweetened tea, sparkling water, or just plain water.

by Anonymousreply 203January 27, 2020 8:10 PM

If you are dining out, order sensibly from the menu but ask for a to-go container when your food is served. Immediately take half of what's on your plate and pack it away. That's your next meal.

by Anonymousreply 204January 27, 2020 9:10 PM

Sure it is if you're big enough, you're committed, and you're not exercising much. Is is sustainable? That is the better question. Probably not for a grown man. Many would NOT recommend such a low calorie diet. I would say try it to someone who needs to lose a lot...30lbs or more... A quick initial success may make it easier to train, and that is a good excuse to attempt. I wouldn't try to stick to it long term.

Drop as much as you can for a few weeks, perhaps a month, then begin working out and walking, and biking. Stop driving if you can. Then you can go up 1600-1800 calories, and still drop fairly quickly. You really shouldn't try to limit yourself to less than 1800-2000 long term. (especially if you're physically active, or training.

1200 calories a day would be fine for a small cubefrau who wants to drop a few pounds for her cousin's wedding. It's not enough to sustain a working man.

In order to maintain weight (I'm 61) I eat a maximum of 1000 calories a day and 20 grams of carb. I note every mouthful in a journal. I walk all over creation and am (and remain) very energetic by nature. What can I say? It works for me.
