How much will this suck?

Writer Christopher Lucas

Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette and Michael Shannon as George Jones.

Unless the stars are willing to look like hollowed out, pill popping lunatics who collide like weather fronts in all the best ways, it will suck very much.

Or be great camp. Especially if they sing.

I don't think either of those two have a problem looking "like hollowed out, pill popping lunatics who collide like weather fronts in all the best ways."

It will be good, and more than likely will be campy as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 2July 7, 2022 1:17 AM

Originally, Josh Brolin was George. This has been in development for years. I’m looking forward to it.

by Anonymousreply 3July 7, 2022 1:20 AM

They should have gotten Leslie Jordan for Tammy.

by Anonymousreply 4July 7, 2022 1:21 AM

I think Tammy Wynettes last husband killed her.

by Anonymousreply 5July 7, 2022 1:23 AM

R4 I was worried if JC could sing, but her Oscar winning performance as Tammy Faye proved that she can.

R5 Me too. And, I hope he is rotting in hell.

by Anonymousreply 6July 7, 2022 1:25 AM

Sorry, R4 I don't know why I tagged you in R6.

by Anonymousreply 7July 7, 2022 1:26 AM

I know that this makes no sense, but Jessica Chastain aggressively bores me to death, to the point where her being in a movie is a deal-breaker. She was perfectly fine in Zero Dark Thirty, and I've heard she's great as Tammy, but ughhhhhhzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I have the same visceral reaction to Jared Leto. Off-topically, ~DLA

by Anonymousreply 8July 7, 2022 1:27 AM

Tammy is a goddess and deserves better than the bland Chastain

by Anonymousreply 10July 7, 2022 1:36 AM

When you watch old interviews of Tammy you just know she’s a Republican homophobe.

by Anonymousreply 12July 7, 2022 1:40 AM

No, you’re thinking of your mother R12.

by Anonymousreply 13July 7, 2022 1:56 AM

I have been on DL too long--I read "Tammy" as a reference to Tom Cruise.

by Anonymousreply 14July 7, 2022 2:02 AM

There's a TV movie ("Stand By Your Man") from 1981 with Annette O'Toole playing Tammy that is excellent, IMO. It's on YouTube in its entirety.

by Anonymousreply 15July 7, 2022 2:09 AM

George Jones was a hideous individual, and a slave to addiction who beat the shit out of Tammy (his third wife, of four) when he got drunk, which was all the time. I never liked him and found his singing voice annoying. I'm biased anyway (Team Tammy!), but he didn't deserve her, and I'm sorry she married him to begin with.

by Anonymousreply 16July 7, 2022 3:00 AM

R16 if you love him, you’ll forgive him

by Anonymousreply 18July 7, 2022 3:11 AM

Will she still be justified and ancient?

[quote] Originally,[bold] Josh Brolin was George[/bold]. This has been in development for years.

Would have been true-to-life if Josh was George. No need to step into character to become a physically abusive husband.

by Anonymousreply 20July 7, 2022 4:04 AM

I thought that was Julia Roberts in OP's pic. Wonder what Julia thinks of Jessica.

by Anonymousreply 21July 7, 2022 4:13 AM

As a fan of the music of both George Jones and Tammy Wynette I will go see this

by Anonymousreply 22July 7, 2022 5:53 AM

Is Chastain’s career path “play camp Tammys from the past”? She’s pretty much peaked now.

by Anonymousreply 23July 7, 2022 6:21 AM

r23, lol, which Tammy should she play next?

by Anonymousreply 24July 7, 2022 6:45 AM

Michael Shannon does not at all look like George Jones. Jones was called "Possum" due to his close-set eyes. Shannon's eyes are really far apart. They should have seen if Ryan Gosling or Ryan Reynolds had any acting / singing chops.

by Anonymousreply 25July 7, 2022 7:19 AM

Biopics of Tammy Grimes and Tammi Terrell are in the works for Jessica.

by Anonymousreply 26July 7, 2022 7:31 AM

Sounds epic. I will lay out snacks for this. Will they show George drunk-driving his riding mower into town for booze? Will they show him taking out a bridge in another drunk-driving incident that the County makes him pay for? Country stars bust up shit worse than rock n' rollers, just being themselves-- they don't even have to try.

by Anonymousreply 28October 8, 2022 12:40 PM

In the 1970s, George and Tammy bought a house called "The Plantation" out in the boonies of Central Florida off 540A. When my mother would drive by on our way to visit her mother in the neighboring town, we'd pull up to the front gates and stare, hoping Wynette would come out. They'd fly their friends in to give fabulous parties and concerts.

Is Chastain going to remake Tammy and the Bachelor, so she'll have a Tammy trifecta?

by Anonymousreply 30October 8, 2022 1:26 PM

I cannot stand Jessica Chastain. Overrated publicity whore who works in nothing but Oscar bait. Bitch, you already have an extremely undeserved one, why do you need another?

by Anonymousreply 31October 8, 2022 2:24 PM

I hope they include George's cocaine induced "duck" persona.

by Anonymousreply 32October 8, 2022 3:27 PM

Jessica Chastain was terrific as TFB. Well-deserved Oscar.

But this one is a hard pass for me.

by Anonymousreply 36October 9, 2022 3:57 AM

To those bitching about Chastains casting just be thankful they didn't cast Amy Adams or Michelle Williams

by Anonymousreply 38November 14, 2022 1:17 PM

I hope it doesn't suck. I was a big fan of theirs growing up in the 70's. I know GJ was a jerk, but, I liked them together. I was always suspicious about Tammy's death too.

by Anonymousreply 39November 14, 2022 1:57 PM

Which Tammy will jessica play next?

by Anonymousreply 42November 14, 2022 3:00 PM

Good lord, is that Jessica croaking out "Stand By Your Man?"

by Anonymousreply 43November 14, 2022 3:04 PM

When a version of a song is that classic, it is better to lipsync.

by Anonymousreply 44November 14, 2022 3:16 PM

I recently rewatched it chapter two. I will never understand why the soulful amy adams wasn’t cast as adult bev. There is something so superficial and hollow about jessica chastain as an actress. She feels like an inevitability rather than something anyone can’t wait to behold.

by Anonymousreply 45November 14, 2022 3:20 PM

I despise Chastain. Why the hell does she have an Oscar? Then again, I could also say this about the no-names that won supporting the prior year, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Renee Zellwegger, Rami Malek, Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Alicia Vikander, Jared Leto, Eddie Redmayne, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Hudson, Reese Witherspoon, George Clooney, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Helen Hunt…

by Anonymousreply 46November 14, 2022 3:50 PM

R45 Perfect encapsulation of Jessica Chastain. I'd watch this in a heartbeat if Amy Adams had been cast.

by Anonymousreply 47November 14, 2022 5:20 PM

The powers that be have always wanted her to happen on a big level. So they gave her an undeserved oscar and still nobody cares about her. She's boring.

by Anonymousreply 48November 14, 2022 9:02 PM

Apparently Al Pacino was instrumental in "helping" Jessica Chastain in her career -- and in helping her "convey emotion." I'll bet she conveyed plenty of conveyed emotion in the trailer between scenes. I'll bet! Ugh. Et tu, Al!

by Anonymousreply 49November 14, 2022 10:44 PM

Tammy should rise up out of the grave and beat that bitch senseless for daring to sully her classic song with her warbling.

by Anonymousreply 50November 15, 2022 1:09 AM

Am I the only one who thinks this looks great? I’m looking forward to it and will be watching.

by Anonymousreply 51November 15, 2022 2:20 AM

The reviews are trickling in: seems like it hits a lot of the typical biopic beats. However, the performances of the two leads are being highly praised. I will be watching!

Next up for Chastain: a reboot of the 'Tammy' film franchise. Cue to Debbie Reynolds rolling in her grave.

by Anonymousreply 53December 1, 2022 2:12 AM

I really do hope we see George driving his lawnmower 14 miles for a drink.

Too bad producers couldn't afford rights to Tammy's voice because as already mentioned above Chastain sounds like shit. Who would believe a voice like this would take Country by storm!

by Anonymousreply 54December 1, 2022 2:41 AM

Back before she was famous, she worked at Nancy's Beauty Salon in Birmingham, where my partner's grandma and aunt used to get there hair done.

by Anonymousreply 55December 1, 2022 3:04 AM

Stand by your mayonnaise.

by Anonymousreply 57December 1, 2022 3:13 AM

I thought the first episode was wonderful and did not suck at all. Did anyone else watch?

by Anonymousreply 58December 5, 2022 10:58 AM

I watched the first episode. Michael Shannon was fantastic. Chastain? Dreadful. She was doing so many distracting things, and whoever told it was a good idea to do her own singing must seriously hate her guts.

by Anonymousreply 59December 5, 2022 3:29 PM

R59: I give her credit for being a non-nepo baby and making it on her own damn hard work but god she is overrated as fuck. She wins an Oscar for a Razzie Donald Trump in drag performance and now this shit show. I heard she’s also going back to Broadway this spring after fucking up The Heiress a decade ago. Thinking she could top Cherry Jones, bitch please.

by Anonymousreply 60December 5, 2022 4:34 PM

R46, Some of your "No-names" are very much "YES-names!" Leo? Come ON!

by Anonymousreply 61December 5, 2022 11:29 PM

It’s still insane to me that she won an Oscar for her hammiest work (Tammy Faye) and was completely ignored for career-best work in the same year (Scenes from a Marriage).

by Anonymousreply 62December 5, 2022 11:54 PM

Shit.

Even George Jones had a hard time playing George Jones.

by Anonymousreply 63December 6, 2022 12:11 AM

R62: I was also snubbed in 2013. A girl who licked Harvey Weinstein's balls won over me. Travesty.

by Anonymousreply 64December 6, 2022 12:31 AM

I thought Chastain and Shannon were both very good in the first episode. And her singing is fine. Those bitching are just bitches looking for something to bitch about…

by Anonymousreply 65December 6, 2022 1:17 AM

R42 A controversial turn as Tammi Terrell.

by Anonymousreply 66December 6, 2022 2:00 AM

Michael Shannon is always interesting to watch. I think he'll do very well as the very fucked up George Jones.

by Anonymousreply 67December 6, 2022 2:02 AM

I think Jessica Chastain does a decent job of capturing her speaking and singing voice. Not laid on too thick.

by Anonymousreply 69December 6, 2022 3:33 AM

I like her a lot in The Help.

by Anonymousreply 70December 6, 2022 3:33 AM

Please tell me it will include the insane “kidnapping”. I know that was after Jones but that’s just too good and nuts to pass up

by Anonymousreply 71December 6, 2022 3:39 AM

I would think anyone that actually pays to see this shite is outta their minds. BORING

by Anonymousreply 72December 6, 2022 3:41 AM

There's something about Jessica Chastain that made me not able to "warm to her". Then I read some interview where she said, "if trans existed when I was in high school, I'd have been all over that"

Really? Why? It sounds like she views it as a fad. I guess she'd have been saying she's really a man just to be in the "in crowd"? That's sick. She's crazy and she's hyper-socially conscious because it's a fad. She really doesn't care about any of the stuff she purports to care about/support. She's a complete phony.

Now I loathe her. Fake, phony, cow

by Anonymousreply 73December 6, 2022 3:50 AM

PlutoTV is showing the first ep for free on their "Showtime Select" channel. I caught about half of it yesterday morning by accident. My ex thinks it's amazing, but George Jones also once nearly ran over him with his lawnmower. (True story, and of course George was drunk as a possum, I mean, skunk.)

by Anonymousreply 74December 6, 2022 8:32 AM

My partner's stepfather once punched The Possum out for being sacrilegious at a bar. George had just cut a gospel album and was being (surprise) a drunk asshole. Stepdad told him he should be a little better behaved after doing an album about the Lord, and he replied, "I DON'T OWE GOD A GODDAMN THING!"

by Anonymousreply 75December 6, 2022 1:08 PM

Episode 2 was good, though not as strong as episode 1

by Anonymousreply 76December 12, 2022 5:00 AM

Chastain is strangely underpowered in this.

by Anonymousreply 77July 11, 2023 11:56 PM

It wasn't very good. Neither Brolin or Chastian looks like their characters but that really isn't their fault. They gave it a good try.

I didn't like the near total focus on domestic drama rather than their music. George and Tammy became famous and are remembered to this day because they were great artists with amazing back catalogue not because they had messy personal lives. The miniseries reverses this by considering their music, their performing and their artistry secondary to their personal dramas. Which has to be deeply insulting to the memory of George and Tammy.

by Anonymousreply 78July 12, 2023 12:15 AM

Yeah, I feel like two episodes of this is enough. Seems so obvious.

by Anonymousreply 79July 12, 2023 4:32 PM

Both Shannon and Chastain just got Emmy noms for the series.

by Anonymousreply 80July 12, 2023 4:44 PM

I hope Chastain completes her Tammy Trilogy with The Tammy Grimes Story.
