What BS. Everyone pronounces it the same. NOBODY says "Toronno" like that video suggests.

by Anonymousreply 1March 2, 2023 2:15 PM

Well that’s time I’ll never get back.

by Anonymousreply 2March 2, 2023 2:22 PM

I thought it was TRA-nah? (more or less)

R1 Are you actually from Toronto?

by Anonymousreply 5March 2, 2023 2:33 PM

The video got boring very quick. Why ask 20 people to say a word when you made your stupid point after the first three?

One of those automated voices on a YouTube video pronounced Ottawa as OH-tah-wah, which I think is much more interesting.

People from rural areas tend to say "Toronno", people who have an iron grip on their pronunciation / force themselves or people who are ESL say ToronTo.

by Anonymousreply 7March 2, 2023 2:46 PM

It's usually spelled Tronna in the vernacular literature.

I’m Canadian (not from Toronto) and I pronounce it “Toronno”. I would say “Tra-nah” is a specifically Southern Ontario (working class) pronunciation.

Another “Upper Canada” regionalism is pronouncing “anything” or “anyone” as “enah-thing” or “enah-one” - though this is dying out, you still notice it in Boomers.

by Anonymousreply 10March 2, 2023 2:51 PM

Most of those people were tourists.

Whoronto or Tortonto, depending on the circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 13March 2, 2023 3:08 PM

I was not expecting "Choronno."

by Anonymousreply 14March 2, 2023 3:13 PM

The second T is typically muted or removed entirely, at least among Canadians.

"Toronno"

Also, Montreal is often pronounced as "Muntreal," even among Anglos.

The interviewer's voice is so strident, I had to cover one of my ears.

by Anonymousreply 16March 2, 2023 4:08 PM

I didn’t watch the video but I’ve known for a while that “cool” people pronounce it “Toronno”

by Anonymousreply 17March 2, 2023 4:32 PM

Wgaf?

It a souless city, with horrible urban planning and design, and cold, unfriendly people.

by Anonymousreply 18March 2, 2023 4:36 PM

Calgary is another one. I say Kal-Gree (turning it into a two Syllable word).

by Anonymousreply 19March 2, 2023 5:22 PM

I pronounce it "Don Mills."

by Anonymousreply 20March 2, 2023 5:28 PM

Don Mills is actually pronounced like "get-toe".

by Anonymousreply 21March 2, 2023 5:37 PM

It so rarely comes up in conversation, I’ll have to think about it.

"The Golden Bough" by Sir James George Frazer reveals where the silly concept of "soul" came from. Imitative Magic.

I really am scared by the huge dinosaur from there, Torannosaurus rex.

by Anonymousreply 25March 4, 2023 6:00 PM

Agree with R19 as kal-guh-ree sounds too formal.

by Anonymousreply 26March 4, 2023 7:26 PM

It's really Toron'o.

There's a glottal stop where the second T is. Very natural to natives of North America.

Elton John is pronounced El'n, very similar.
