A gyro or gyros (/ˈdʒaɪroʊ, ˈʒɪər-, ˈjɪər-, ˈɡɪər-/; Greek: γύρος, romanized: yíros/gyros, lit. 'turn', pronounced [ˈʝiros]) is a Greek dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie.

In DC, so glad the owners of the Crew Club decided to scrap the deal that would’ve closed the best bath house in the mid Atlantic.

They used to have stock signs at Greek takeout places in the mall that showed how to pronounce it, and it was "yee-roh".

by Anonymousreply 14August 21, 2020 10:00 PM

Interesting that JI-Ro is winning 60 to 24%, but boy if you went by these comments, you'd sure think it was the other way around.

Vivian Vance. But I pronounce everything Vivian Vance.

by Anonymousreply 16August 21, 2020 10:08 PM

Like HERO but with a gutteral G.

Although friends and I have pronounced it JY-ROE (thinking we're funny) for so long that now we've normalized it to ourselves, which is scary! We also pronounced jalepeno as" Ja-LOP-a-no" being cute and have to think twice before saying it in public!

by Anonymousreply 21August 21, 2020 10:37 PM

I know a lot of people slag on Arby's, but their gyros in particular are great.

by Anonymousreply 22August 22, 2020 12:37 PM

Pete Holmes says it, ‘YEAH-roe’.

I ALWAYS respond to surveys on DL with Vivian Vance as an option.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2020 9:28 PM

26 responses and nothing about Opie being at that culinary nightmare known as Arby's or how, in all likelihood, Opie is a fat whore?

You bitches are slipping.

by Anonymousreply 27August 22, 2020 9:33 PM

I need a gyro, I'm holding out for a gyro 'til the end of the night. He's gotta be strong and he's gotta be fast and he's gotta be fresh from the fight.

by Anonymousreply 28August 22, 2020 9:58 PM

The relevance here being the presence of juicy meat and a spit-roast? Greek-style?

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2020 12:49 AM

I have always pronounced it HERE-oh.

But a Greek guy told that that is how you can always spot Americans. He said the correct pronunciation is "GY-row"
