He is my lover. He ran away to join me at our love nest at the top of the Empire State Building. We're planning a spring wedding, at Buckingham Palace, with my best friends Princess Margaret and Amy Winehouse!
But don't try to find us! If you ask his family, they'll deny everything!
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | November 26, 2023 7:26 PM |
The article says he left his phone at home. That makes it sound like he wanted to disappear.
[quote] Matthew’s family has traveled from Onaway, MI to Rochester to search for him. They said Matthew left his phone at home when he left Rochester around 10 p.m. Monday night and headed east.

[quote] His car was last tracked to the thruway exit in Syracuse on Monday. "We don’t know if he went north or south from there but he had exited at 36, is where his license plate was picked up at," said Matthew's father, Mark.
North takes you to the Syracuse Hancock International Airport. South takes you into Syracuse University. So maybe he jumped on a plane, or was meeting some college jock at SU.

I get it but I do think there is a line. I recall the 9/11 stuff and wasn't thrilled w/that either. There's just a line. If someone goes missing or if they tragically died - I dunno I just switch to another thread to each their own man. Just think if someone's loved one goes missing you guys are making light of it its just weird to me. Believe me, I get all of the other humor on other stuff.

| by Anonymous | reply 65 | November 28, 2023 7:06 PM |
R63 yes that detail of the bank account is odd. Also why wasn't he upset about it. In college if someone stole all my money it would have been a crisis.
| by Anonymous | reply 66 | November 28, 2023 7:08 PM |
Emptied bank account, no wallet or phone, searched maps of isolated outdoor areas before disappearing even though his father says he didn't like to camp in the cold. The family says "it doesn’t make sense," but it's textbook pre-suicide behavior.
Hopefully there's a comparatively gentler explanation, like drugs or he'd fucked up at school and needed time to regroup before facing his parents. Comments from friends make that sound less likely, though.
| by Anonymous | reply 67 | November 28, 2023 7:21 PM |

More like pre planned disappearance. You don't need money in the afterlife.

[quote]You don't need money in the afterlife.
That's true, but some people like to feel as if they've tied up loose ends before departing. I'm not sure if police have confirmed the account was emptied, though. We know he wasn't truthful leading up to his disappearance, since he lied about plans to visit a young woman (assuming her denial of such plans was truthful).

He ran away with his girlfriend who lives in Canada
| by Anonymous | reply 72 | November 28, 2023 7:57 PM |
R71, he was a student, it's doubtful the account contained much. My guess would be that if he was suicidal, he used it to obtain a gun. Or if he had drug issues no one knew about it, it went toward that.

The pressure of pretending to be perfect got to him.
| by Anonymous | reply 75 | November 29, 2023 5:08 AM |
[quote]The pressure of pretending to be perfect got to him.
As with the case of Kenny DeLand Jr., the Rochester NY college student who s year ago went AWOL on a semester in France, it sounds like it could be another case of a family so far up its own ass that he felt he had no breathing room. No chance to do what he wanted, no chance to leave the house without someone knowing what articles of clothing he wore. No chance to not have mother, father, and siblings keeping tabs and phoning him every 10 minutes about some stupid shit (small wonder he left his phone behind.) A father whose been grooming and coaching him for wrestling since the kid could walk. It seems he's been under close supervision at every step. Even his roommates were on the phone to his parents not long after he left the house - how many of your college roommates knew how to reach your parents so quickly and easily?
The news reports make me sad for the kid who seemed smothered in a family that didn't believe in breathing room.
| by Anonymous | reply 76 | November 29, 2023 9:25 AM |
If it were drugs, he was either a user or a seller and owed someone too much money. He emptied his account, gave them what he had, promising to get them the rest (that never works), and they killed him.
Someone promised him he'd be rich and famous doing porn.
He knocked up some girl, was going to give her the money (for an abortion?) and ran into her daddy.
Sex trafficking?
Or 🙂
But I'm going with suicide or runaway. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the most likely. Gay or just couldn't stand the pressure of college. They'll probably never find him or he's in a field or water somewhere. All of that and his good looks aside, this is sad. He seems like a good kid. That's rare anymore.
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 29, 2023 10:40 AM |
This sounds very much like the college kid from Texas last year who never showed up for his graduation. Turned out he was failing and had dropped out the semester before, but was too ashamed to tell his domineering father. So when the family showed up for his graduation, the kid got in a car and drove away, then killed himself. They found his body in the woods about a week later.

[quote] Even his roommates were on the phone to his parents not long after he left the house - how many of your college roommates knew how to reach your parents so quickly and easily?
I don't find that odd at all. When you live with people, phone numbers are around. One or more of them could have been roommate and friend. Or maybe they called the girlfriend first, and she knew the number. Plus, he left his phone behind;, maybe it wasn't locked, so the number was right there.
| by Anonymous | reply 83 | November 29, 2023 7:52 PM |
[quote]Plus, he left his phone behind;, maybe it wasn't locked, so the number was right there.
Who leaves on earth leaves his phone unlocked?
(And certainly not someone who constructs unlikely stories about the emptying of his bank account by mysterious persons, or lies about where he is going when he leaves the house, leaving behind his phone to avoid pinging and tracking.)
Phones numbers are around...on your phone. My husband and I can unlock each other's phones should some emergency arise, but we share a lot of things. I'm not sharing my phone access so that roommates can access my financial accounts, etc. most people keep their phones on some sort of auto-lock in case they are lost or stolen.

Even if he sometimes left his phone behind while running routine errands, the idea of leaving it behind while planning to explore unfamiliar terrain is absurd. You leave your phone behind when you don't want to be found, same reason you might drain your bank account so your final spending can't be tracked.

The Adirondack Mountain News on Facebook has been following the story nearly every day and have contacts in the area reporting. But not much new. Yesterday, these statements were within their report:
[quote] The disappearance of 22-year-old Rochester Institute of Technology student Matthew Grant has triggered an ongoing and expanding search effort that goes beyond state borders, leaving residents and authorities alike determined to unravel the mystery surrounding his disappearance.
[quote] Matthew disappeared just before Thanksgiving, leaving his family grappling with a multitude of unanswered questions and an unyielding determination to bring him home. The tight-knit community of Lake Placid has become the focal point of the search, as Matthew's parents actively retracing his potential route, driving through the area in a relentless quest for clues.
[quote] The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has uncovered a potential lead, revealing that Matthew's web browser data showed an interest in maps of Whiteface Mountain and the Appalachian Trail. This has raised concerns and speculation that he may be in the Adirondacks, prompting an intensified search effort in the region.

UPDATE: Some new video footage came in today.
========================================
"The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received an update into the search for Matthew Grant, an RIT student who went missing last November, as both law enforcement and his family continue to search.
"On Monday, deputies said that they received surveillance footage from the evening of November 20 when Grant went missing. The footage came from a gas station in the area between Exits 39 and 41 near Syracuse and Waterloo.
"Deputies said that Grant was alone and wasn’t in danger. The vehicle he was driving, a 2014 Jeep Cherokee with the Michigan license plate ESR8141, was last tracked to Exit 36 by I-81. They add that his EZ pass was last recorded taking the Watertown-Binghamton exit on the NYS Thruway."

Someone finally posted a photo of him in a social situation with some friends.
This pic was posted by the mother of the guy on the right. HIs name is "Willy," and mom says Matthew and the guy in the middle, named "Dara," are her son's best friends. They're all on the RIT wrestling team.
Another RIT mom saw it and posted that her son, "Seth," who's also on the wrestling team, is also one of Matthew's roommates.

If he had his wallet stolen I’m assuming he would’ve cancelled his credit cards and tried to get a temporary license ASAP, if he wasn’t going to commit suicide. But if he let those things slide and left his phone…of course it depends how many days before his disappearance he “lost” his wallet.
He sounds drunk or on pills in that TikTok video.

Okay. Here's something new.
There's an article today at NBC and the story is getting the "Dateline" treatment there.
In one of the quotes, the father says:
[quote] Matthew is the oldest of Mark and his wife Nancy’s two children. “Both of my children are adopted,” Mark said. “We greatly appreciate the gifts — the gifts we were given by having those kids in our lifetime,” he said, tearfully.
So both he and the sister are adopted. I guess that could explain why the two kids don't really look like the parents, R152, and why the parents look a little old, R154.
The article also mentions the girlfriend he lied about going to see. Dad says he only dated her "once or twice." Sister says that her brother recently broke up with a girlfriend. It's unclear (to me) if they're talking about the same girl.
There's also more detail about the recent theft, and there's a photo of him from when he was inside the gas station.

Since he's adopted, maybe this was some attempt at meeting up with one or both of his birth parents, or some sicko claiming to be them, and things went horribly wrong. Perhaps he was supposed to meet up with someone at that convenience store.
Not wanting to be negative, but he's gone. In the photos, he doesn't act genuinely happy. Tired of being "Mr. Perfect Golden Boy" or afraid of coming out to his family. No one seems to have any idea what was really going on in his head or what kind of secrets he kept. At this point, I'd be happily surprised if this has a happy ending.

I've thought the same thing as well, because why he stopped there seems something of a mystery. I've read elsewhere that he didn't buy any gas there, and I haven't read any report that says he bought anything while inside the store either. Note the Dateline report just says that he just walks around. There's always a camera focused on the checkout counter in these places, but nothing from that perspective is mentioned.

R173 Since we learned in the Dateline article that dad could monitor his credit/debit card, it sounds like the parents were still supporting him. Perhaps his phone may have been on their account as well under some family plan. If he had some kind of hidden life, I'm thinking he may have had a second (secret) phone.

"According to Fire Chief Howard Ike with the Delaware Water Gap Fire Department in Pennsylvania, local police found Matthew's car Tuesday.
"Following this discovery, search and rescue teams performed grid searches on Mount Minsi for several hours Wednesday. The crews ended up finding Matthew in the town of Palmerton on a trail, roughly an hour away from where his car was found.
"The Grant family expresses their gratitude to everyone who has helped them throughout this journey."

[quote]Assuming the disappearance was of his own volition, is there any chance he'll have to pay restitution for the search or will his age get him off the hook?
Why on earth would he be responsible for that?
He didn't freak out and report himself missing and hide laughing the whole time. He didn't orchestrate some elaborate hoax meant to waste police time. Is it a crime for an adult to go somewhere and not inform his clingy parents? Is it a crime to get tired of having spent 22 years with your parents up your ass every day and a father who made your life center around wrestling, like it or not, from age 6 or whatever? Is it a crime to go off for a time on one's own without first issuing a press release?
If someone intentionally causes a government agency to waste resources verifying his whereabouts and well-being, that might be a crime. What this guy did seems personal, and any circus of search and rescue operations is not his fault.
| by Anonymous | reply 210 | December 14, 2023 4:15 PM |

R210, he didn't tell his friends where he was going either. He just disappeared. So why are you running your mouth about his parents when you don't know the first thing about them?
| by Anonymous | reply 212 | December 14, 2023 4:26 PM |
[quote]Why on earth would he be responsible for that?
Some states have laws allowing them to charge for search and rescue operations if the 'lost' individual behaved in a negligent manner. Since he signed the guest book and eventually came forward, he can argue he was never lost, but the waste of resources isn't trivial.
Even if there's no cost to Grant or his family, there could be a different sort of cost to other families in the future if authorities wrongly decide 'This kid pulled a Matthew Grant' and don't bother looking too hard for someone who is legitimately missing.

[quote]he didn't tell his friends where he was going either. He just disappeared. So why are you running your mouth about his parents when you don't know the first thing about them?
Is there a law that he must tell his friends where he goes? A law that he must tell his parents? A law that a person can't 'disappear'? Do people not have the privilege of going somewhere for a few weeks without telling everyone who might worry for their safety?
Whether he felt the weight of expectations or other pressure, I shouldn't like to venture. Whatever caused him to go hiking for three weeks and to give no notice of his plans I don't know that either. But to my mind people shouldn't be made criminals for going off plan, off the map, off the expectations of others. It's not as though he travelled to posted government land and ignored warnings not to rappel into the mouth of an erupting volcano for an Instagram live story.
It shouldn't be a crime in itself for someone to go off grid or to disappear for a while. The expenditure of a police forces is down to the police forces. Some people are reported missing and very little police effort is expended, but if a college student the adult child of helicopter parents goes missing after spending 22 years of being in their scope daily, it's another story.
| by Anonymous | reply 214 | December 14, 2023 6:47 PM |
You don't even know if they're "helicopter parents" you just want to make this guy look like a saint by demonizing his parents and blaming them
And it's not a crime to disappear, unless you took steps to lie to authorities and claimed to have been kidnapped or something. That said, it is selfish to just take off, leading your friends and family to believe that something happened to you. Is it too hard to just give people a heads up and say "Hey, I want to get away for a few days" so that they don't waste police resources looking for you

It was a behind a paywall, so try the following link to view.
The statement within the article reads:
[quote] "Hello everyone, Matthew Grant here. I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped in the search process. I feel incredibly grateful to have people like you all in my corner. It's hard to understand just how much support you will have, regardless of how you are doing personally. I am doing much better now that I am reunited with my family. It means the world to me. I don't have my phone right now but as soon as I do I will try and thank every person I can individually. I can't say it enough, thank you so much."
So get those cards and letters in now boys, and you might receive a personal message from the twink!
