Herb Baumeister / the 1-70 Strangler
Andrew Hansen
Someone posted this story in the Shawn Raymond thread and it blew me away. Herb Baumeister was as dark as they come. How could I have never heard of this stealth gay serial killer? This story chilled me to the bone. It just gets creepier and creepier. Those poor boys!

?I saw a documentary and his wife came off as either very naive or mentally deficient. How did she not know he was gay.

R1, it's called being a naive frau without much sexual experience

Wow, his wife looked like a frau even when young. She reminds of that actress from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Very matronly face.

A terrible story about the power of denial in the face of evil. Herb is the very definition of evil. *chills*

So his wife said they only had sex 6 times? She was good at denial and justifying weird behavior.

This story really got to me, thinking of his weird normal Midwestern persona masking his psychopathy. Those young men died terrified, they were already marginalized and alone. They were trapped in the middle of nowhere and were disposed of in the woods. Some of them had no one claim their bodies.

Ah... Back home again in Indiana.

I still can't believe she said this and thought nothing of it - "Juliana would later say that in 25 years of marriage, they had only had sex 6 times."
Did she not talk to ANYONE about this and think it was normal?
I know this was before the 80's when everyone started therapy speak, but damn.

An ugly, profoundly sad story. God knows what information he took to his grave. That montage of identified victims in that linked article is so upsetting. It looks like pictures from an early 90’s gay personals section in a city weekly. Some look like average queens, but some look so young, naive and learning about life.

Fox Hollow Farm (Herb's estate) is haunted by the spirits of the men he killed and possibly Herb himself. Paranormal Witness did a very creepy episode on it.

You have to wonder - how did this not so great looking middle aged man pick up so many young and attractive guys?
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 5, 2021 10:20 PM |
R14 Yes! Although the guy they interview who he unsuccessfully tried to asphyxiate and told the detailed account was no prize.

A guy clearly tries to murder you by strangulation to the point where you fake dying to trick him. Then you chat some more and let him give you a long ride back home? In the middle of the night?
I guess running screaming into the woods wouldn’t have been the smoothest move. They were in a very remote area.

Mike Pence is from Indiana, that's creepy enough.

I wonder how many twink corpses are buried in Pence's yard

The estate is now surrounded by very expensive subdivisions. It's in rolling horse country in the upscale Hamilton County. Extremely desirable real estate. But for some reason, no one wants to touch it.

Here's the Paranormal Witness on the haunted estate.

There’s quite a few documentaries on this killer (and the haunted property). I enjoyed watching this one. It had lots of details I didn’t know about, and some great (although cheesy) re-enactments.
