I used to love so much Miss Cleo's commercials. Especially when her Jamaican accent would come and go.

The actress behind Miss Cleo had a super fascinating life. Her youtube interviews are really good.

Yes we can, darlin’ - but you already knew that, didn’t cha?
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 5, 2022 5:57 AM |
I always wondered if with the turban and the tarot cards she was supposed to call back to Jane Seymour as Solitaire from "Live and Let Die."

She was a lesbian actress. She kept using that ridiculous accent even years later in interviews. The entire thing was a gimmick. She wasn’t from the Islands.

OMG -- watch party? Do I have to?
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | December 5, 2022 7:33 AM |
Incredibly depressing. And the unsightliest cast of gays and lesbians ever assembled is Miss Cleo’s final assault against pigeons who managed to escape the crimes of the Psychic Readings Network.

I love Debra Wilson, but she should have laid off all those tattoos and piercings.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | December 16, 2022 8:34 PM |
Another horrible documentary from HBO. It was nothing more than a puff piece. No investigating whatsoever, and her lesbian partner is now living as a man. lol
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | December 16, 2022 10:02 PM |
Terrible documentary because there was no story to tell. Well, let me amend that- there was a story to tell, perhaps even two stories (Miss Cleo's being the lesser of the two) but since the people surrounding the bigger story refused to be interviewed, and Miss Cleo is dead and not one single person who was interviewed about her could offer anything concrete, not even her ex-lovers, there was nothing to say. And everything with Debra Wilson and especially Raven Symone was useless filler.

YAAAASSS!
I'm freaking out. I love me some Miss Cleo. And Deborah Wilson/Skelton's in it? For reals? HELL YEAH!!!
I just hope they've actually investigated her life, and don't just have a bunch of people sitting around going "she's a mystery!" Give us the full details.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | December 18, 2022 6:52 AM |
Sorry R20, it really is just a bunch of people sitting around saying "she was a mystery."

This sucked. Too much of a hagiography that tried to suggest she was a real psychic and that her totally fake Jamaican accent was "real" because "non-western concepts of identity" etc. I thought it was kind of pathetic. Another one of those things where we're supposed to feel guilt for "mistreating" women who did questionable things in the early 2000s like Britney, Paris, etc. God forbid they ever be held responsible for their actions.
Interestingly according to Wikipedia she had two children. Neither of them were interviewed.

I found this on HBO Max this morning - will watch it this afternoon. Miss Cleo - don't fail me ! Please be entertaining !

I HATE deesownest people who fake their nachonaleetee!
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | December 21, 2022 5:30 PM |
It was weird. If you called, at some point, it was a recording of Miss Cleo WITHOUT the accent. And she was like "Hi, it's Cleo." I never called for a reading, so I'm not sure why I called the number. Curiosity.

The documentary would've been better if it'd focused on the operations of the PRN company. Tougher to make, but a better story.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | December 21, 2022 5:31 PM |
It wasn’t the best, but I was glad to have watched it.
If nothing else, it reversed the impression I had that she was a mastermind charlatan. She an actor who was exploited. I also enjoyed learning about her later in life advocacy and her relationships with her chosen family.
I hope I never have to see another t-shirt emblazoned “Going Places”.

Will Miss Warwick sing “There’s Always Tarot Cards To Remind Me”?
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 21, 2022 5:44 PM |
This show was as boring as all hell. The only redemption was that attorney David Aronberg, who is damn hot at 51.
BTW, Dionne took a lot of shit for endorsing one of the psychic hot lines back in the 90s. What about Billy Dee WIlliams ? In this documentary, it shows he was shilling for one of them, too. How did he escape the criticism ?

What I never understood- As I recall, the ads pretty clearly suggested you'd get to talk to Cleo herself. Not just a Cleo associate. Obviously, this was not possible. So what would happen when you called? They just connected you with someone other than Cleo and people just went with it?
I'm sure this question makes me seem really dumb, but I am curious. Did anyone here ever actually call and pay for a REE-DEN?

I'll be hosting a watch party at the Smog THC Hookah Lounge in Jersey City at midnight on Saturday night.
BYO and some for me.
And a $500 cover charge. For my favorite charity.

Only to the gullible and naive. This woman faked cancer to get out of paying employees.

Shouldn’t the little SJW idiots be screaming for Cleo’s cancellation for appropriating someone’s culture? I mean, even though the person is, that’s never stopped them.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 22, 2022 3:39 AM |
I don't remember why she was reviled. I thought people just eventually thought her schtick was stupid.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 22, 2022 3:48 AM |
What a wasted 90 minutes. The show told us nothing. And what did WIlson and Raven hace to do with her ? Why use those two to talk about her ?
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 22, 2022 2:18 PM |
Wilson used to make fun of her on MAD TV
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | December 22, 2022 7:34 PM |
Same reason to include Raven who played an "informercial psychic" character likely based on Miss Cleo. They show a really brief clip in the documentary.

R38 - I’m not sure, but I’m guessing she is. I’m not exactly preferential to a lot of tats and gauged ears… but damn, people here are SO mean about her looks.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | December 25, 2022 1:58 PM |
R39 here. I wrote preferential — what meant was partial***
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 25, 2022 1:58 PM |
Debra W was the best part. It was almost like she was channeling Whitney Houston on mad tv again.

See constant ads for actors to make testemonials for products, false claims to convince the gullible to foolishly spend their money. Even Scientology hires models/actors for recruitment videos at a higher rate than average. Those of questionable morals go along with the scams.

It highlights a big problem in society, where any advice or service is only taken seriously if it costs a lot for the individual. Even fortune-telling.
People were looking for clarity or hope and paid some random entertainer to give it to them.

| by Anonymous | reply 44 | December 27, 2022 4:00 PM |
I struggled to finish this one. The documentary had no revelations, no insights, no memorable moments. Taking her seriously as someone with otherworldly abilities is ridiculous. Come on ... it's all a scam.
Debra Wilson being bald and covered in tattoos and piercings was my only takeaway from the film.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | December 27, 2022 4:27 PM |
I’m guessing it’s another Ryan Murphy production
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | December 27, 2022 4:59 PM |
I remember her well from my teenage years. I liked her godson Matt... what does the DL know of him?
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | January 15, 2023 12:52 AM |
Debra seemed kind of tweaky and WAY into Ms. Cleo. But made the thing compelling!
6/10

I resisted watching this but I sunk into in the first couple minutes since I love 90s-era nostalgia. There's so much of the decade that hasn't been brought up for review
It brings you back to all those nights watching syndicated TV and taping shows with your VCR which always included Miss Cleo commercials
