HBO Max: better than Netflix?

Writer Robert Guerrero

No, I'm not a shill.

I find Netflix has a lot of junk I'm not interested in these days. HB0 Max, on the other hand, has great original series and movies, and I've also enjoyed a lot of foreign series I enjoy. Plus they have a lot of the DC Universe shows I haven't seen, and they will be airing the second season of the great THE OTHER TWO.

RAISED BY WOLVES, THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT, FRAYED, GHOSTS...have enjoyed them all.

They add lots of new things and classic movies all the time. Plus, they will have WONDER WOMAN 1984 on Christmas day!

by Anonymousreply 61March 23, 2022 3:00 AM

HBO Max has Doctor Who, so yes.

by Anonymousreply 1December 2, 2020 5:52 PM

I thought I was the only person who watched Ghosts. V. enjoyable, low-key sitcom. (I think there's going to be a third season?) On the other end of the Britcom spectrum, HBO Max also has Stath Lets Flats, which is very cringey (and funny). Someday I'll get around to watching the most recent season of Search Party. Too much TV!

by Anonymousreply 2December 2, 2020 5:55 PM

I prefer Amazon Prime to Netflix. HBO Max is a bust.

by Anonymousreply 3December 2, 2020 5:57 PM

and the whole DC network - access to Teen Titans - and Doom Patrol.

by Anonymousreply 4December 2, 2020 5:57 PM

God this is such a marketing plant.

by Anonymousreply 6December 2, 2020 6:18 PM

Not until it’s available on Roku, no sir.

by Anonymousreply 7December 2, 2020 6:24 PM

Netflix sucks ever since they decided to switch to relying on their own original content. They say “yes” to anything and 90% of the shows are turkeys.

by Anonymousreply 8December 2, 2020 6:29 PM

What r7 said. HBOMac still isn't available on Roku which means a large part of the potential audience has limited access to it

Sounds like a bunch of superhero crap.

by Anonymousreply 10December 2, 2020 6:35 PM

What r7 and r9 said. HBO Max fucked up big time with their rollout. I was able to swap to HBO Max onmy iPad but everything I had saved on HBO Now did not come over during the transition. Not being able to access via on my TV sucks big time because iPad and TV (Roku) apps don't synch up anymore.

Overall, HBO’s programming is superior to Netflix. Lately, everything I’ve watched on Netflix has no “oomph”. I don’t know a better way to describe it?

by Anonymousreply 11December 2, 2020 6:54 PM

I have both and my verdict:

HBOMax has the best movie selection. So many blockbusters and Criterion Collection films...I love it.

Netflix has a better collection of TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 12December 2, 2020 6:58 PM

NETFLIX all the way but I have stock in the company. GO NETFLIX, GO!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 13December 2, 2020 7:02 PM

HBO Max is also a portal to TCM.

by Anonymousreply 14December 2, 2020 7:19 PM

HBO Max may not have the quantity of content that Netlflix has but their quality is superior.

That is the direction Netflix should have gone in but instead they just churn out one horrible production after another with a few gems (Like The Crown and Sex Education) appearing here and there. They also can't back out of it with their absorbent prices.

Netflix doesn't even have Marvel anymore with that going to Disney+. At some point they've got to realize that they're in danger and act like it.

by Anonymousreply 15December 2, 2020 7:28 PM

OP here.

Since my cable package no longer has TCM, I've enjoyed seeing some TCM content on HBO Max.

I addition shows I talked about in my first post, I've also watched SEARCH PARTY, DOG HOUSE UK (wonderful!), EXPECTING AMY, I HATE SUZIE. Enjoyed them all.

Watched INDUSTRY and liked it better than I think most DLers did.

I hate the CW superhero shows based on DC comics, but the DOOM PATROL, and second season of TITANS were both really good. They are now on HBO Max.

Also, SILENT VALLEY, which tells the same story as the USA network series EYEWITNESS from a few years ago--the one about the two gay teens witnessing a murder.

by Anonymousreply 16December 2, 2020 7:30 PM

Netflix is far from being in danger r15. Their subscriber base is huge and growing and they just had a smash hit in Queen's Gambit.

They are fine, they send their love.

by Anonymousreply 17December 2, 2020 7:34 PM

I think Netflix is doing very well in overseas markets. I'm looking at you, India!

by Anonymousreply 18December 2, 2020 7:35 PM

[quote] Their subscriber base is huge and growing and they just had a smash hit in Queen's Gambit.

Starting in November 2019 we got Apple TV, Disney+ came after, HBO Max came in May of 2020, Peacock started in April of 2020 with Hulu and Amazon Video already having been established and as a result their growth speed has slowed and their viewing time has decreased this past year. They're still top of the pops but that's an issue.

In terms of popularity for Q2 of this year, Prime Video sits at 24.7% and Netflix at 31.5% while keeping in mind that many of the newer services that might be competitive aren't capable of being so thanks to the lack of distribution on various platforms and countries.

"Danger" might not have been the best word to use but yes they do need to think about that, especially with another price hike coming which they have said was going to happen no matter what happened this past year.

by Anonymousreply 20December 2, 2020 9:09 PM

This is huge for HBO Max! The Matrix 4,' 'The Suicide Squad' and 'Dune' will all air on there the same time they are released.

Flight Attendant was great

by Anonymousreply 22December 19, 2020 2:34 AM

HBO Max is finally on Roku, apps is a little buggy.

by Anonymousreply 23December 19, 2020 2:37 AM

Do they have all of HBO's old shows like Larry Sanders and Mr. Show?

by Anonymousreply 24December 19, 2020 2:49 AM

Yes, they have all the shows HBO has ever made since the 1950s (or whenever they started).

by Anonymousreply 25December 19, 2020 2:59 AM

I think HBO actually started in 1970, though I'm not sure about that.

by Anonymousreply 26December 19, 2020 3:01 AM

R26, I know, I was joking about the 1950's.

I feel HBO Max feels more cinematic than Netflix. His Dark Materials is an impressive fantasy series, the characters have daemons, small little animals that are part of their psyches and run around accompanying and advising them. I can imagine lots of CGI involved in creating those creatures.

by Anonymousreply 27December 19, 2020 3:03 AM

HBO Max is on Roku now. The days of Netflix monopoly are over.

by Anonymousreply 28December 19, 2020 3:08 AM

Disney plus is projected to overtake Netflix in the next couple of years. HBO Max won't, but it'll take big chunks of Netflix's market.

by Anonymousreply 29December 19, 2020 3:14 AM

I'm not impressed with Disney Plus. I think the kiddies and the parents will get Disney plus for them. HBO Max will be a thorn in Netflix side because their reputation is more stellar and it's about quality over quantity.

by Anonymousreply 30December 19, 2020 3:21 AM

HBO Max is free through Amazon Primeif you subscribe to HBO. It won’t load on my Roku, but it works fine on a laptop.

by Anonymousreply 31December 19, 2020 3:29 AM

R30, it's funny you posted that because I was just about to ask if anyone here with Disney+ really think it's worth the money or not. All I really hear about is "The Mandalorian" and couldn't care less about any of those "Avengers" movies, so was wondering if I should bother subscribing. I know with a subscription you also get Hulu, which I hear is pretty good.

by Anonymousreply 32December 19, 2020 3:34 AM

I got Hulu when they had the Black Friday special - $1.99/month.

by Anonymousreply 33December 19, 2020 3:41 AM

[quote]Flight Attendant was great

I watched the first two episodes last night. Good stuff.

And I've never watched even 10 seconds of "The Big Bang Theory," but Kaley Cuoco, who stars in and produced "The Flight Attendant," seems to be the real thing: a very pretty actress who's got both acting chops and comedy flair. Deb Messing must loathe her.

by Anonymousreply 34December 20, 2020 3:26 AM

Kaley has the same mannerisms as Jennifer Aniston. If not for the physical features, I felt like I was watching Jennifer Aniston on tv again. Only Jennifer at her age was a little cuter.

by Anonymousreply 35December 20, 2020 3:29 AM

Didn't they say a bunch of movies will be streamed next year via hbo max, the same day of theater release? I wonder if you have to pay for that.

by Anonymousreply 36December 20, 2020 3:33 AM

You will not have to pay for it unlike Disney Plus. This is why some people in the industry got pissed.

by Anonymousreply 37December 20, 2020 3:35 AM

Like Goldie Hawn, Kaley needs a lot of hair to look good.

by Anonymousreply 38December 20, 2020 3:37 AM

I am surprised that Hollywood didn't rush out a video on demand streaming service for their latest movie releases the moment it looked like Covid-19 screwed with their movie ticket sales.

by Anonymousreply 39December 20, 2020 3:40 AM

The app itself is better.

by Anonymousreply 40December 22, 2020 1:04 AM

[quote]No, I'm not a shill.

Yes you are OP. That's a copy & paste marketing template if I've seen one.

by Anonymousreply 42December 28, 2020 2:32 PM

I just got rid of Netflix...I have both Amazon Primeand HBO Max...tons of monies to watch now

by Anonymousreply 43December 28, 2020 2:36 PM

The TCM collection on HBO Max should be much better.

by Anonymousreply 44December 28, 2020 2:37 PM

Kaley looked good when she cut her hair really short on Big Bang

by Anonymousreply 45December 28, 2020 2:46 PM

You are hilarious, r42. And a little sad.

by Anonymousreply 47December 28, 2020 6:50 PM

I watched The Witcher on Netflix and was not impressed with the production, it looked like a cheesy tv show filmed on the studio backlot. Compare that to GOT or any fantasy show on HBO and you can tell the difference in the production, the cinematography, the quality is definitely there.

by Anonymousreply 48December 28, 2020 10:19 PM

just saw midnight sun on netflix...a bit boring.

by Anonymousreply 49December 29, 2020 6:22 PM

Apparently there is currently no option to turn off Autoplay in HBO Max. That’s not a huge deal on its own for me; however, about two minutes before the end of each episode, an “Up Next” display with the synopsis of the next episode pops up which is extremely annoying and distracting.

by Anonymousreply 50December 30, 2020 3:28 AM

I Hate Suzie was pretty good. Then again, I like Billie Piper, I try to catch her in any TV series she's in.

The guy who played her husband wasn't very good, I didn't like his looks either. He was a bear type, he might appeal to certain DL-ers.

by Anonymousreply 51January 21, 2021 2:05 AM

This doesn't happen for me. I watch HBO Max full screen on my Mac.

by Anonymousreply 52January 21, 2021 2:10 AM

I couldn't get through more than two episodes of Stath Lets Flats. Every character was super annoying and grating. This series reminded me a bit of the US version of The Office, I couldn't stand that series. If you enjoyed the US The Office, you might enjoy this series.

I prefer the lead actor's real life sister, Natasia Demetriou (who portrays his sister on this series), on What We Do in the Shadows on FX. Both the lead and his sister are terrible on Stath Lets Flats.

by Anonymousreply 53January 21, 2021 2:22 AM

I’m loving Raised by Wolves

by Anonymousreply 54January 22, 2021 11:51 PM

I wasn't really sure about Raised by Wolves, but it does get interesting. He sure does love his birthing scenes.

by Anonymousreply 55January 23, 2021 12:02 AM

Loved: Search Party, Frayed

Really liked: Love Life, Raised By Wolves, Pure

Gave up on: I Hate Suzy, Two Weeks To Live

by Anonymousreply 56January 23, 2021 2:23 AM

Search Party is one of my favorites. I have a crush on John Reynolds.

by Anonymousreply 57January 23, 2021 2:48 AM

what are you guys watching? care to recommend something? TIA!

by Anonymousreply 58August 26, 2021 10:55 PM

I've been enjoying Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+, and even AmazonPrime way more than Netflix in the last year. Netflix is overhyped, and more than half of it is junky documentaries and D-level stuff.

by Anonymousreply 59August 26, 2021 10:58 PM

There is something wonky with the HBOMax App, can't rewind as easily as the other streaming channels.

by Anonymousreply 60August 26, 2021 11:29 PM

I can't find the "Raised By Wolves" thread, which is symptomatic of exatly what I wanted to discuss... Season 1 was endlessly talked about. Season 2? Nobody's talking about it. I haven't seen or heard anything.

Can someone else find that Raised By Wolves thread? Was there ever a season 2 thread?
