Has Will Smith been canceled indefinitely?

Writer Ava Lawson

I was just thinking that before 'Slapgate' Will was one of the last reigning box office champions from a bygone Era, an Era where a star could open a film based on their name alone. Do you think he could ever go back to those days or has public opinion soured on him that badly? I realize he lost his mind at the Oscars of all places, but compared to real Hollywood criminals like Charlie Sheen or Jonathan Majors he's practically a choir boy. Is their anything Will can do at this point to improve his image?

His poor choice to assault someone so publicly was creepy and cringey. Any resemblance of the career he had before is over.

by Anonymousreply 1April 12, 2024 2:04 PM

Depends how big a donation he makes the year.

by Anonymousreply 2April 12, 2024 2:05 PM

I kind of don't really care, but if Mel Gibson can come back anybody should be able to come back.

I sure hope so!

by Anonymousreply 5April 12, 2024 2:30 PM

Yep. Stick a fork in him, cause he's done.

He had an amazing run though.

Stunning how he fucked it up.

by Anonymousreply 6April 12, 2024 2:35 PM

I fucking hope so. He’s old and fug now. His shrivelled poisonous virago wife can get him to do her yard work and keep him away from our screens.

Poor comparison. Gibson while drunk mouthed off. He didn't assault the police officer without cause as millions watched.

It’s all in the numbers…

Not indefinitely, but he’s still in timeout for the moment.

by Anonymousreply 11April 12, 2024 3:11 PM

His superpower was his likability and seeming decency. That slap shattered his image and revealed him to be a violent, imperious narcissist. So now he is not as likable or decent.

by Anonymousreply 12April 12, 2024 3:14 PM

Maybe Smith can team up with Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington in their new anti-woke movie production company!

Did Mel come back? He mostly does crappy straight to video movies with Z-list casts, and he can't seem to get his long-promised Passion of the Christ sequel off the ground.

by Anonymousreply 15April 12, 2024 3:42 PM

Will's got a 4th [bold]Bad Boys[/bold] movie coming out this summer. I don't think the core audience for that cares about the slap.

by Anonymousreply 16April 12, 2024 3:48 PM

He is done. Completely and forever, damn done.

What Mel did was worse. Being drunk is no excuse.

R4, R7 I purposely didn't mention Jada in the OP because I feel like she's her own separate entity at this point, and didn't want to derail because I know most of DL can't stand her. I will say that as the wife of one the biggest stars ever she's never been particularly helpful to his public image, and seems to resent him even though he's responsible for her A list lifestyle and keeping her relevant. There were so many other women who wanted to marry Will back in the day and it's puzzling why her chose her of all people. Even more puzzling is his stubborn insistence to go down with the sinking ship he calls a marriage.

by Anonymousreply 19April 12, 2024 4:27 PM

Maybe if he had a solid comedy he could make a comeback. No sanctimonious drama that takes itself too seriously. I always loved funny Will Smith.

by Anonymousreply 20April 12, 2024 4:32 PM

^ It's because he is a closet fag and needed a beard, who also happens to be bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 21April 12, 2024 4:32 PM

Will and Jada have some kind of arrangement. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but those two are weird. I think they're both still closeted Scientos, but for some reason won't come out about it. But you will never get the truth truth until, maybe, after they're dead.

Poor parenting may not be a crime, but the Smith-Pinkett cabal crossed into child abuse with their irrational, subjective and arrogant approach to reality for their brood.

Criminal.

I agree with R20 that funny Will is the best Will and he needs to play on that more instead of being so contrite about the slap. It's already happened, he can't take it back, but he can definitely go forward if he humbles himself a little and make the public remember why they liked him in the first place. I do wish he had a more traditional Hollywood wife willing to work with him to cultivate a more respectable family image, but she'd sooner exploit her loved ones for her own personal gain. Will really needs to get away from her, but he may have had blinders on this whole time and genuinely can't see that she not only resents him but also played a major part in his fall from grace.

I’ve fucked up so many times in my life that I just have to hope redemption is possible but when you look at celebs the phenomenon of people remembering only one thing is so strong.

Angelina — vial of blood

Tom Cruise — jumping on a couch

Will — slapping a guy at the Academy Awards

It’s hard to imagine him ever coming back from that.

Gibson came back as a director with "Hacksaw Ridge" (although that seems right now like a one-off) because he was behind the camera. He has never really come back as an actor.

Career down the DL shitter forever. He deserves it.
