Had Aaliyah not tragically died in 2001...
Christopher Lucas
Would she have had a career like Beyoncé’s? Or bigger? Maybe not as big but still a big career?
I know some people feel Beyonce owes her solo career to Aaliyah and say Beyonce stole some of Aaliyah’s style early in her career. Idk how true that is.

NO..
Beyonce is a result of marketing with no real talent.

OP, I loved that song. It came out after she died, no? That was my favorite song of hers. I hated the song with the cooing baby in it. But when I heard this I thought Damn I'm sad she's not around to do more like this.

There wouldn’t a Beyoncé.

Aaliyah had a rare talent where I believed everything that she sang emotionally.

She was so so pretty. So sad she died so young and so tragically.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 4, 2019 5:01 PM |
What's really tragic is that plane crash was 100% avoidable. It was so weighted down with equipment and luggage, it couldn't take off properly.
The people who loaded that plane and the pilot were idiots.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 4, 2019 5:07 PM |
It sucks that the only music of hers that is available to legally stream is the album she made with that creep R. Kelly, “Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number”.
I think this is my favourite song by Aaliyah.

R8, I think that was the video she was returning from shooting when she died. Here is another gem.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 4, 2019 5:07 PM |
Rock The Boat is what she filmed right before she died. They finished early and rushed to get back home, putting too many people and luggage on that small plane which crashed and killed everyone.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 4, 2019 5:07 PM |
I doubt she was as crazy ambitious as Beyoncé is. Very few people are.
Along with Missy Elliott, she was the greatest early beneficiary of Timbaland's production skills. Those songs didn't sound like anything else on the radio in the late 90s/early 2000s.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 4, 2019 5:08 PM |
She was the only goof thing about Queen Of The Damned.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | January 4, 2019 5:10 PM |
I still listen to the Aaliyah album regularly. No, I don’t think she would have had quite as a big a career, but what she did put out would be better quality than Beyoncé.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 4, 2019 5:11 PM |
I love Aaliyah, but saying she would have been as big as Beyonce implies that she was a newcomer when she died, which is not true. When she died she had been famous for like 10 years, she was as famous as she was ever going to be.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 4, 2019 5:12 PM |
R17 false. Her career was still on the rise when she died and what made it most sad was she was going from R&B and hip hop stations mostly to mainstream pop stations etc. as well as her acting career slowly taking off. Queen Of The Damned was getting her positive press and reviews and scripts were starting to show up at her door.
Then boom, she died.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 4, 2019 5:15 PM |

Aaliyah's self titled album was not doing very well before her death, which made it successful. She was no great talent, but a very pretty girl with a classy demeanour which set her apart from her more trashy, less polished and inarticulate contemporaries like Beyonce.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 21 | January 4, 2019 5:18 PM |
Gosh, she'd be 40 in a couple weeks had she mailed a couple suitcases home.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | January 4, 2019 5:24 PM |
She got married at 15 to R. Kelly. Who knows how long they'd been having sex at that point.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | January 4, 2019 5:35 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 24 | January 4, 2019 5:46 PM |
R24, they did since they got the marriage annulled.
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | January 4, 2019 5:47 PM |
R18, you are wrong. Her last album was hopping before her death sent it rocketing up the charts. It didn't have any good singles, her earlier stuff was better
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | January 4, 2019 6:23 PM |
^ whoops, I meant flopping not "hopping"
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 4, 2019 7:34 PM |
She's way bigger in death than she was alive. She was attractive but she wasn't really beautiful or pretty. She's been reimagined in death as this hip hop princess but her videos were very sexualized and it was plain she was singing about sex. And she wasn't that great of a singer; her voice was thin and didn't have much range. Producers like R Kelly created her -- she wasn't particularly charismatic either. But she was connected, smart, a hard worker and did what she was told to do.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 4, 2019 9:00 PM |
She was just flavor of the month, like countless others before her. Not a fan of Beyawwnze, but she is a real singer.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | January 4, 2019 9:24 PM |
i'm afraid i will have to agree with r28 here
but 'more than a woman' was very well produced. everything timbaland creates is balanced. his sense of proportion and compostition is impeccable - whatever he is as a person, he has produced the best pop music of the last 2.5 deacdes.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | January 4, 2019 9:29 PM |
R31 it doesn't matter who Timbaland works with, the songs always sound amazing. Even Nelly Furtado
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | January 4, 2019 9:38 PM |
exactly, r32
that's why it's obvious he's the real talent. he's the common denominator in all those impeccable, sleek, perfectly balanced pop songs (performed by various different artists) that nobody can best. just listen to 'say it right'
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | January 4, 2019 9:41 PM |
I like black divas but Aaliyah's voice didn't appeal to me one bit. Maybe she would've been huge, but I would've be mystified as to why.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | January 4, 2019 9:42 PM |
She didn't have Beyounce's talent and was rather dull, i think her career would have fizzled and she'd probably be doing some lame BET reality series now.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 4, 2019 9:44 PM |
I loved Timbaland's minimalist pop but he has lost his touch recently. His last collaboration with JT was atrocious.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 4, 2019 9:49 PM |
She was very, very cute and fresh looking. Now for the negative:
She would never have been as big as Bouncy because she did not connect with the white audience in the way that Bey, Diana, Rhianna and Whitney did. Pooh pooh that all you wish, but a black singer, male or female, cannot reach the top unless they successfully cross over. It has nothing to do with talent...it has to deal with talent and appeal melded together. What saddens me the most is that her death was so easily preventable. I am guessing that none of the people onboard had any grasp of aeronautics and the principal of lift.
Very sad.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | January 4, 2019 9:52 PM |
r36 do you mean man of the woods?
oh why did you have to remind me of this awful little monstrosity of an album... =(
anyway, i will just pretend it never happened and relisten to timbaland's shock value, JT's amnesia, dress on, mirrors, lovestoned, what goes around and the other little gems.
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 4, 2019 9:54 PM |
OP, I don't think she would have been as big as Beyoncé in the United States but in the rest of the world? Yes, I do believe she would have been bigger. Beyoncé is actually really not that popular outside of the United States, but Aaliyah was VERY popular in Europe when she alive. I think that was due to the song "Try Again", the first song to really combine electronica and hip hop. I find Aaliyah to be far more beautiful and "real" than Beyoncé. Her video for Rock the Boat shows her sex appeal and she never, ever comes across as forced. You cannot say that about Beyoncé. I really wish R. Kelly never fucked and married her.
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 4, 2019 11:20 PM |
Also, did you know that Aaliyah wanted to do some kind of duet with Trent Reznor from nine inch nails? Can you imagine ANY R&B singer of today singing with someone like Trent Reznor today? The closest thing we have to that is....Beyoncé singing with Ed Sheeran. And that's not close at all. Aaliyah was pretty forward thinking, in terms of her sound.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 4, 2019 11:23 PM |
Aaliyah was hot right before she died... but her career would have flamednout within a couple years anyway.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | January 4, 2019 11:33 PM |
R39 Do you also think Kelly Rowland is more real and beautiful that Beyoncé?
| by Anonymous | reply 42 | January 4, 2019 11:34 PM |
R42, more real, yes. More beautiful, I don't know. But there are many people who feel that way.
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | January 4, 2019 11:38 PM |
Yes I am well aware that many black women find Kelly far more appealing than Beyoncé.
But to quote my coworker(a BW), " Ni**z will step over 5 Kelly Rowlands to get to one ugly ass white woman."

I’ve always thought Aaliyah would’ve been given some of Ciara’s early songs like “1,2 Step,” given Aaliyah’s ties to Missy Elliot.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | January 4, 2019 11:47 PM |
Aaliyah, Ciara, Ashanti... they were all interchangeable.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | January 4, 2019 11:50 PM |
R40 That makes a lot of sense. Timbaland and Reznor were both great at creating catchy techno beats and using innovative production techniques.

| by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 5, 2019 1:19 AM |
I don't credit all of Aaliyah's success to Timbaland - there were other artists he produced who weren't consistent hitmakers and are now largely forgotten (Tweet and Ms. Jade are two that come to mind), and there must be a reason for that. But it would be foolish to deny that he was a big part of what made her records unique.
| by Anonymous | reply 53 | January 5, 2019 1:37 AM |
R49, she wasn't a flash in the pan, she had been famous for years when she died

Don't forget Aaliyah had hits with both R. Kelly AND Timbaland as her producer. So clearly she had something special. It's funny someone mentioned Tweet above--Aaliyah was supposed to get the song "Oops (oh my)". But she died, so....
| by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 5, 2019 1:49 AM |
R51 - did you even bother to read the OP's post before commenting??????? This thread is ABOUT Aaliyah vs. Beyonce. That just might be why Bey is referenced so many times in the body of this thread.
| by Anonymous | reply 56 | January 5, 2019 1:55 AM |
You all know that she was killed by the cartels. She or her people refused to transport drugs on the private plane. The crash was retribution and a warning to others on the inside.
| by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 5, 2019 3:50 AM |
I think had she lived she would have had a longer movie/tv career than in music. I can totally see her being put in all those fast and furious movies.
| by Anonymous | reply 58 | January 5, 2019 4:00 AM |
I'd heard of her, but was involved with other things during that time and so never got the appeal. Until now. After hearing her on the carpet, in interviews, the clips from Queen of the Damned (that walk out of the bar was something else), and especially her music videos, I'd say she would've been bigger and more popular than B, had she wanted it. Her voice is better, imo, with more emotional inflection and a unique vocal style. She knew how to move and was only getting better. If you look at Beyonce during that time, and then at her, there was no contest.
Had she lived, it would be the same.
No, not conventionally beautiful, but drop dead gorgeous and with a sensuality that didn't quit. She had the 'It' factor.
| by Anonymous | reply 59 | January 5, 2019 4:11 AM |
Beyonce is the undeserving benefactor of young white guilt. Because any real musician knows she's nothing more than a pop tart barbie.
| by Anonymous | reply 60 | January 5, 2019 4:18 AM |
The trauma of her abuse would’ve caught up to her eventually (especially when she figured out her parents sold her out to a predator), so she’d probably have ended up with addiction or quit to do gospel music or start a family.
| by Anonymous | reply 61 | January 5, 2019 2:39 PM |
R60 what does that have to do with white guilt? So then what would you call it for white pop tart barbies like Britney Spears? Stop the race shit already. It’s old.

| by Anonymous | reply 64 | January 5, 2019 4:45 PM |
Aaliyah has a film or 2 scheduled, a duet with the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails, she was supposed to perform at the VMAs and be their opener (the spot went to Britney after Aaliyah died). She would have been in that song all the stars did after 9/11.

| by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 5, 2019 6:11 PM |
I think she could have done a lot of great stuff, but unlike Beyonce she made a lot of questionable choices in her personal life (because she was a real person...). I generally find comparisons between Beyonce and Michael Jackson to be a bit naff, but they are comparable in how they were primed to be superstars from an early age and had a good sense of how to manage their career (or how to let others do so).
| by Anonymous | reply 73 | January 5, 2019 6:12 PM |

She was supposed to perform “More Than a Woman” at the VMAs Sept 6, 2001. She was their opener but her death left them trying to find someone else to fill that void which led to about 3 or 4 days before the VMAs them finally getting Britney’s people to agree to do it.
Then came this epic performance.
RIP Aaliyah.

R85 - yes, there are some Beyonce haters here, but the majority of the posts that I have read here over the years are not terribly negative. A vast majority just don't find her to be the second coming of Christ in the manner that her BeyHive gushes to be the case. Were it not for the actions of her rabid fans and the perhaps exaggerated and unwarranted gushing from music critics, I doubt that Queen Bey would be discussed a whole lot on DL. There is very little about her to dislike, but her talent just doesn't live up to all the hype either. And yes - Aaliyah was easily comparable to Beyonce when it comes to singing ability; how absurd to think otherwise.

I think Aaliyah could have had Rihanna’s career. Aaliyah didn’t have as strong of a voice as Beyoncé, but I think she her voice was overall better than Rihanna’s.

Well Rihanna has really created a music career that almost none can equal (at least since Madonna and Whitney, etc.)- no matter what you think of her vocal skills. Only Taylor Swift comes close to producing the number of hits that RiRi has dominated with in the past decade plus. I agree that Aaliyah had a sound that would lend itself to her hit songs - similar but different. Good comparison actually.

Rhianna is one of the sexiest women ever to be in the music industry. EVERYONE white would love to have her style, looks, body, career, and life.
And unlike most black folks, we actually like her yodelly voice. I could listen to Rhianna all day long. I can only take "church singing" black divas in very small doses. I have written this before but here goes again: I bought tickets and few to NY with my husband to see Al Green on Broadway in "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God," AG is my fave singer of all time. Unfortunately his costar was Patti Labelle who I knew little about (this was a long time ago)
I actually ended up leaving the show because Patti's singing brought on a massive migraine.

I stand by what I did say: Rhianna is one of a small group of WOC who white girls would change places with in a heartbeat. They see her as living the perfect life: beauty, riches, talent, sex appeal out the wazoo and millions of men drooling over her.
Her reality may be quite different.

| by Anonymous | reply 118 | January 6, 2019 7:06 PM |
R118 so she's the Becky with the good hair?
| by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 6, 2019 7:07 PM |
That's the rumor, r119. Roy is absolutely stunning and better looking that Bey IMO.
| by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 6, 2019 7:16 PM |
Well for one thing Aaliyah was butch. She was sporty and spunky. Beyonce was all glamor and glitz.
Also Beyonce was more pop compared to Aaliyah’s r&b.
| by Anonymous | reply 121 | January 6, 2019 7:20 PM |
There are rumors that Aaliyah was very "pliable" and was passed around by many in the industry including Missy Elliott. Lots of lesbians were huge fans of Aaliyah because of her soft tomboy style.
| by Anonymous | reply 122 | January 6, 2019 9:53 PM |
Did Missy Elliott ever officially come out... or is she closeted in plain sight like Queen Latifah?
| by Anonymous | reply 123 | January 6, 2019 11:01 PM |
R123 I don't think she did.
| by Anonymous | reply 124 | January 6, 2019 11:22 PM |
Missy Elliot has never come out. She's as bulldagger as they come, like anyone would be surprised if she did.

Aaliyah's career was about to rapidly take off when she died. Rock the Boat was about to be a mega hit and her life ended. Anyone who follows R&B music knows her career would have been massive.
If you look at the many artists that her death cleared the way for, Rihanna, Ciara, and even lesser known artists like Nivea, Amerie, Christina Milian, etc. Aaliyah surely would've gotten first choice of the hit songs that producers had at the time because she was in the game way longer than those others were. Ashanti was the only person comparable to her at that time, they had both been working for years and just started to get hits.
| by Anonymous | reply 126 | January 7, 2019 12:44 AM |
r126 the album had already been out for a month before her death and was not doing very well. It's wishful thinking to assume she was on her way to becoming a global superstar.

Aaliyah has been dead nearly 20 years
I’m just going to appreciate her music, not what might have been
| by Anonymous | reply 128 | January 7, 2019 1:18 AM |
A young girl died because of stupidity and ignorance...I just wanted to punch someone.
| by Anonymous | reply 129 | January 7, 2019 1:42 AM |
Go to Yemen now r129. You will find tons of young girls starving to death . Wasting your emotions on someone whose been dead for 20 years is selfish and self indulgent.

[Quote] If you look at the many artists that her death cleared the way for, Rihanna, Ciara, and even lesser known artists like Nivea, Amerie, Christina Milian, etc.
I wonder what happened to Nivea? All the others are still around. Amerie's latest album is good.

r130 would you like some nails for the cross you're climbing on right now?
| by Anonymous | reply 132 | January 7, 2019 2:43 AM |
r131 Nivea resurfaced recently and talked about how her career basically got shelved by her label; they thought Ciara was sexier.

I thought there were rumors that Ciara was Trans?
| by Anonymous | reply 134 | January 7, 2019 2:47 AM |
R133 - she actually wasn't very sexy - poor thing. Ciara is/was far sexier.
| by Anonymous | reply 135 | January 7, 2019 2:48 AM |
I forgot all about Nivea. She didn’t make much of an impression.
| by Anonymous | reply 136 | January 7, 2019 2:50 AM |
R134 there were. And they were obviously bullshit.
| by Anonymous | reply 137 | January 7, 2019 3:02 AM |
I like Nivea. Her career was a classic flash in the pan. If you watch her tell the story about how she even got a deal, it was just pure luck and perfect timing when Kelis didn't end up on "Danger". She really hit the jackpot thrice, by getting Danger, and having babies by two ultra rich men.
I wonder how Kelis' career would've been different if she got to sing the hook instead of Nivea. So little of these women's success was based on their actual talent. It was mostly timing and their label's availability of catchy songs to distribute at that time.

Any deets on her brother Rashad?

[quote] Also, did you know that Aaliyah wanted to do some kind of duet with Trent Reznor from nine inch nails? Can you imagine ANY R&B singer of today singing with someone like Trent Reznor today? The closest thing we have to that is....Beyoncé singing with Ed Sheeran. And that's not close at all. Aaliyah was pretty forward thinking, in terms of her sound.
I think Aaliyah's commercial profile as a recording artist would have waned. Even her last album had her moving in a more alternative direction. I do think she could have had a career as an actress. She was photogenic and well-liked.
Sadly, I think she would have struggled personally because of her molestation by R. Kelly. I think her trauma would have manifested as she matured.
| by Anonymous | reply 140 | January 7, 2019 4:59 AM |
She would have prospered, definitely. At the time of her death she was signed on to do the sequels to The Matrix, as well as being Whitney's original choice for the Sparkle remake that ended up going to Jordin Sparks. She had IMDB credits going into 2004, and was planning her next studio album for 2005. Her last album was her fastest selling despite the lead single flopping. To compare her to people like Ciara and Ashanti, who both fizzled out after less than five years, is an insult.
As for Beyoncé, I think she would have happened with or without Aaliyah's passing. I think the media would have tried to pit the two of them against each other in the way they try to do with Beyoncé and Rihanna.
| by Anonymous | reply 141 | January 7, 2019 5:43 AM |
I forgot Aaliyah was cast to star in The Matrix sequels but then when she died it went to Jada Pinkett Smith
| by Anonymous | reply 142 | January 7, 2019 5:56 AM |
R142 actually, her role was downsized and given to Marvin Gaye's daughter, Nona.

| by Anonymous | reply 144 | January 7, 2019 7:02 AM |
R135 IMHO Ciara may well be the most exquisite woman ever born. She is perfect.
I never did buy that "born a boy" business. Probably just some jealous ATL bitches started that to thwart her career.
Too bad...she won anyway!!

For such a young woman Aaliyah was savvy and smart in her short lived career. I know she loved the genre in which she made her albums but she knew she had to ‘crossover’ while things where hot. Soundtrack cuts that got played on pop radio, her interest in techno/rock and collobartion with Trent etc. Of course money is in acting gigs and she was ready to go full force with it. As others have mentioned, If she was still alive she would have probably been known as a movie star. She was incredibly photogenic.
| by Anonymous | reply 152 | January 8, 2019 2:40 PM |
Aaliyah was very very photogenic. She never took a bad photo. I love and envy people like that so much lmao.
| by Anonymous | reply 153 | January 8, 2019 7:38 PM |
Yep r153. Even Janet Jackson said Aaliyah was one of the most beautiful people she ever met.
| by Anonymous | reply 154 | January 8, 2019 7:42 PM |

Poor thing. And she didn’t die right away, if I remember correctly.
| by Anonymous | reply 164 | January 17, 2019 11:45 AM |
I don't understand all the comments about her beauty. I always thought her face was sort of masculine and her style was very tom boyish. She lacks the femininity and sex appeal of Beyoncé and Rihanna.
Had she lived, her career would have fizzled out just like Mya, Ashanti, Christina Milan, etc....
| by Anonymous | reply 165 | January 17, 2019 9:37 PM |
Nah. She was very pretty.
| by Anonymous | reply 166 | January 17, 2019 9:40 PM |
Mya is lovely. There’s always someone prettier. Why are we comparing a bunch of women of color and never including white pop stars as if the white ones are superior???
| by Anonymous | reply 168 | January 17, 2019 9:46 PM |
Because r168 we're comparing Aaliyah's peers.
| by Anonymous | reply 169 | January 17, 2019 10:01 PM |
Aaliyah’s peers? Like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore etc. ???
| by Anonymous | reply 170 | January 17, 2019 10:08 PM |
Aaliyah's peers in her genre. Don't fucking make shit where there isn't any, cunt.
| by Anonymous | reply 171 | January 17, 2019 10:15 PM |
Baby Aaliyah’s genre was crossover. And Beyonce, Mya, Rihanna, Christina Milian all did pop songs like Britney etc. they weren’t R&B and hip hop artists as much as pop artists. Them being women of color doesn’t change that.
And Rihanna came years later.
| by Anonymous | reply 172 | January 17, 2019 10:18 PM |
Aaliyah was more r&b/hip-hop than crossover, as I remember. She wasn't getting top 40 airplay like Destiny's Child was. She certainly wasn't in the same category as Britney and Christina, who were very mainstream.
| by Anonymous | reply 173 | January 17, 2019 10:23 PM |
Aaliyah’s “Are You That Somebody” and “Try Again” got tons of top 40 airplay during their time.
| by Anonymous | reply 174 | January 17, 2019 11:36 PM |
I don't know but one thing is for sure: she would have disfigured herself with tons of plastic surgery.

R175 and you say that because????
| by Anonymous | reply 176 | January 18, 2019 12:02 AM |
