| by Anonymous | reply 27 | January 11, 2023 4:06 AM |
R3 no one is speaking about the show. It wasn’t nominated for Drama Series. We are speaking about Zendaya’s performance on the show.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | January 11, 2023 4:07 AM |

I don't watch westerns so Yellowstone is something I've skipped. Besides, I think Costner is a shitty actor. However, I completely enjoyed the series Longmire which I suppose some may consider that genre but it wasn't tainted by any big phony Hollywood bosses.

loooooove natasha...odd and true stoney wit. !
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | January 11, 2023 4:09 AM |
Can someone quote the Costner joke here, for those of us not watching but here online.
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | January 11, 2023 4:09 AM |
JLC is now a thirsty as fuck hanger on. She thinks she can score an Oscar nomination that won't be happening. No real star went. Even lessers like Zendeya and Amanda Siegfried played it small. The A listers who went are just positioning for Oscars. Blanchett wasn't concerned about it because her odds at a 3rd are not realistic.
| by Anonymous | reply 38 | January 11, 2023 4:09 AM |
BRAD PITT NEVER ON STAGE ? WHY HIM THERE ? DAMN.....
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | January 11, 2023 4:11 AM |

| by Anonymous | reply 40 | January 11, 2023 4:12 AM |
R36 she was reading the press release for Costner not showing because he was sheltering in place in SB due to storms. And someone as rich as him can't really afford hotels as you well know if he really wanted to attend.

Brad is trying to help his film and himself get Oscar nominations but Tom, Julia, George, Sandra, Hanks, Denzel, Kevin Costner, Jodie Foster or any of those elite were never really going to go the first year they are back. After this show they may never go again.

Didn't the Jerrod already host some other show before tonight? He's seemed pretty fatalistic after he came out - talked about how there's till issues with his family and hasn't exactly seemed super confident. Maybe he knows that this was his last time and tried to say "fuck it" - but even then the jokes didn't land.
| by Anonymous | reply 84 | January 11, 2023 4:35 AM |
Jerrod Carmichael is not untalented. His latest comedy special is brilliant.
But he did himself no favors tonight.

Will Spielberg ever settle his beef with the two contemporary icon movie stars of modern times and make a movie with Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts again. It seems the director any studio would wanna pair with them 20 years ago both had such unfortunate experiences with him. Yet they could make a zillion dollars together.
| by Anonymous | reply 109 | January 11, 2023 5:01 AM |
Everyone saying Cate thinks she has no chance at a third are delusional. She’s been doing tons of press for Tar. She’s at a point in her career where she can skip the globes and still not lose any momentum for that tour de force performance. With Streep, Day Lewis and McDormand all winning third ones the last 10 years ish, I believe she will pull it off. Yeoh might come close, but ultimately it’s Cates to lose. EEAAO is too ridiculous and over the top to win a lead or top award.
| by Anonymous | reply 110 | January 11, 2023 5:03 AM |

I continue to be impressed by Colin Farrell. His speech was lovely and heartfelt, and when he told Brendan Gleeson he loved him it wasn't in a straight-boy "I love you, man" way — he was genuinely emotional.
I hope he wins the Oscar.

| by Anonymous | reply 120 | January 11, 2023 5:20 AM |
The hing what makes Regina presentation so funny is because it also seems that she may have been honestly reacting to the press release, and realizing it was making it seem like a joke/diss, when she sincerely was discovering the absurdity of it herself. It brilliantly reads both ways.

You'd think a single-cam mockumentary-style workplace comedy couldn't possibly be good at this late date — at least that's what I thought — but the writing is tight, funny, and surprising, and it's probably the best ensemble cast on network TV. Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lisa Ann Walter as the two seen-it-all veteran teachers are phenomenal.

NYT: The stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the 80th Globes ceremony, foregoing the typical monologue (zingers about high-wattage attendees) for a subdued opening directly addressing the lack of diversity that kept the show off the air last year. In several moments, a quiet awkwardness fell over the room, as when he noted that the group that awards the Globes didn’t “have a single Black member until George Floyd died.”
“One minute, you’re making mint tea at home, the next you’re invited to be the Black face of an embattled white organization,” he continued, explaining how he came to take the gig. “Life really comes at you fast, you know?” He cracked that a friend, upon learning that he would get paid $500,000, told him to “put on a good suit and take them white people’s money.”

| by Anonymous | reply 138 | January 11, 2023 5:41 AM |
People who assist stars behind the scenes (agents, publicists, stylists) will tell you that very few were eager to attend the ceremony, either as nominees or presenters. At least 20 nominees did not attend, including Julia Roberts, Blanchett and Zendaya, who was named best actress in a television drama for “Euphoria.” Some of the no-shows cited work conflicts, but the weather didn’t help, with the event coming on the heels of what meteorologists said was the worst rainstorm to sweep through Los Angeles since 2005.

No.
I couldn't figure out their connection for a minute, other than Jamie Lee will show up to the opening of an envelope these days if there's a virtue to be signaled.
But what I still haven't figured out is: Why did they give Eddie Murphy that kind of award? Has he ever apologized for his rabidly homophobic standup material that shot him to stardom?

Colin Farrell is such a sweetheart. He jumped up and helped Jennifer Coolidge to the stage—getting in front of the designated “helper” to do so—and she didn’t realize it was him holding her arm until they hit the stage. It looked like she said “oh, I didn’t know it was you!”

R172 no one really wants the job. Gervais is through. So are Fey and Poehler. He wasn’t even their first choice. They went for years without a host, which is probably what they should do going forward. Last night show was just ok, save a few wonderful speeches, but it seemed to go on forever. Not having a host makes it come in right at 3 hours.

R38 I beg to differ: Blanchett has a virtual lock on her third Oscar, hence she didn’t need to show up to a shitty award show like this one. And Michelle Yeoh’s arrogance in her speech (a real turnoff) showed she knows she has no chance of winning Oscar, so she let her rip here.
Particularly in its first half, the Golden Globes seemed like the equivalent of a pre-school class where every kid gets an award for showing up: awards seemed to be given not for excellence but rather to prove the Globes are now about “diversity” and “inclusion.”
Wins by “The Fabelmans” and “Banshees” immediately makes them less likely to win the Oscar for Best Picture. I think after seeing the spectacle of mediocrity of this show, “Tār”’s chances have improved: that’s about an artistic giant brought low by a world of pygmies. The Globes seemed ro illustrate that perfectly.
| by Anonymous | reply 179 | January 11, 2023 1:43 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 181 | January 11, 2023 1:55 PM |
ROFL at this airing on a Tuesday when normal working people have more important things to do. And in typical DL fashion, everybody white deserved their award, but nobody Black, Asian or Latino deserved theirs.
What a sad award season this will be if those are the nominees/winners for Best Picture. Spielberg's ode to himself or another overhyped, mediocre picture from McDonagh. And that Butler creature winning for yet another music biopic/Elvis impersonation. Jesus Christ! It's the same people and projects over and over again. I don't know how anybody can stand to watch it. Also, the worst "Non-English Language" film won.
| by Anonymous | reply 182 | January 11, 2023 1:57 PM |
R179 Blanchett has shown up every other time she’s been nominated and won at the globes, except for one of her wins when no one showed up due the strike in 2008, so she’s well aware of the promoting tool the globes are.
Fabelmans and Banshees are wonderful films that had their chances bolstered last night by their wins. There is definitely an overlap between globes best pics and Oscar best pic which is too big to ignore. Films like Tar and EEAAO will not have the broad support needed on the weighted ballot to win. Too cerebral and in the case of EEAAO, ridiculous and over the top. Like it or not, Spielberg is Hollywood royalty, and is the kind of director the voters get behind. He hasn’t won in nearly 25 years. I just see Oscar voters giving it to anyone else this year.

Twitter lovers mocking Austin's voice as too Elvis.. WTH cares?!
Austin Butler can speak like Mickey Rooney in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" as far as I'm concerned! He deserved that Golden Phallic Symbol last night 100%!
He and Colin each gave wonderful speeches. Next up, mano a amano.
Critics Choice Awards this Sunday, boys. Let's see if they vote like they wrote, because last June they had nothing but the rarest of superlatives for Austin, from "phenomenal" to "astounding" to "movie magic" to "once a decade" and more.
| by Anonymous | reply 185 | January 11, 2023 2:08 PM |
You raise good points, R183. I just wish “The Fabelmans” wasn’t such a terrible film, a melding of Spielberg and Kushner that brings the worst out of both of them, and with a grandstanding, irritating performance by Michelle Williams at the heart of it.
“Banshees” I loved. I get that McDonagh tells shaggy dog stories, his movies aren’t about the big issues, but they are about the peculiarities of human nature and closed societies, and this movie was well written, acted and directed when it could so easily have gone off the rails (which “Fabelmans” does more than once).
I would vote for “Tár” but I agree it’s this year’s “Power of the Dog”: too intellectual and rarified, though excellent.

Austin Butler is no god, he came across like an arrogant twit. Hollywood likes its newcomers to be excited and grateful if they manage to land a breakthrough role. This douche acts like he’s doing a victory lap heading straight to an Oscar. He’s about to learn different.

He was THE worst host ever. Here's the summary of his stint: "Race. Racial. Quiet! Race, race, awards, race. Hosting, Black. Gay Black. Hush! Black de Black Black. Good Night."

The show was like a see saw last night. Some of the winners were at their A-game giving heartfelt speeches (yes, including Austin Butler) some were just the opposite. Some of the presenters were a delight to see and listen to while others (Ana Geystar) were not. Some of the fashions they chose to wear were on point, some were not.
I do miss the old days of the 70s and 80s, when true celebrities were in the ballroom and onstage, and there was excitement over who would win. (And we had Joan Collins to offer her sense of elegance and class).

At first I thought it's just because I'm getting old and don't know who these people are now, then I realized, no, I know who all these people are, they are just tediously uninteresting.
| by Anonymous | reply 214 | January 11, 2023 3:52 PM |
R210 Yes, she did look great for sixty. So she should pose for PLAYBOY or the swimsuit issue of SPORTS ILLUSTRATED to show the public how great she looks for 60, and kindly stay off the stage at the GGs where she had to tell us she looked great for 60. Angela Bassett was the least impressed.

Dear God. Some of you are stupid. Or I should say one of you as it’s mostly one person commenting over and over.
The Globes just came back after a controversial year last year, when no network or streamer would even air them. They wanted someone who would be calm and non-offensive. That is what they wanted. That is why he didn’t make any jokes about anyone in the room, only people not there who have been canceled or had some controversy. He played it safe. They wanted it safe. Of course that made it boring, but it is what it is.

The one joke which was truly tasteless by the host was the one about 'We're in the hotel that killed Whitney Houston'.
Not nice for many reasons - most importanly that the hotel had nothing to do with her death from an overdose. I'm curious if they will ask for an apology from him, or even threaten legal action since this is very bad publicity for them (joke or no joke). Plus, the audience didn't find it too funny, either.
| by Anonymous | reply 233 | January 11, 2023 5:06 PM |
R233 The principal criticism of his hosting was not whether he was offensive or not, rather that he wasn't funny. The humor that I saw (I only watched it for a while) was turgid and obvious; jokes landing with a big thud. It was like watching an amateur comic at an open mic night, telling jokes with no one in the audience laughing.
| by Anonymous | reply 234 | January 11, 2023 5:10 PM |
HFPA and NBC pretty much threw Jerrod into a room of self-important venomous fishwives, and his brand of humor is built on awkward controversy. It obviously backfired on him since he should have read the room before he read them. I thought the Tom Cruise joke was funny, but it'd be like expecting Eve and Addison to laugh at themselves if they were skewered at the Sarah Siddons Awards.

It was worse. Having wealthy successful people lecture you for 3hrs. is not my idea of entertainment. The host was atrocious, singularly charmless and got no laughs from the attendees. Jerrod Carmichael was so tortured and stuck in his own head the whole time. You could see it in his eyes—every joke he made was, like, should I be saying this?
He should have looked to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's approach—they knew how to be savage about touchy matters (especially re Hollywood and women) but also fucking hilarious because they hit at undeniable truth.
His SNL monologue the week of the Will Smith shit was great. His HBO special is brilliant. He's a gifted comic, but he blew it here. Maybe it was too big a stage/task for anyone.

Finally, to say you were unfamiliar with "most of the nominees and winners" is to reveal yourself as not just a whiner but also a dope, as the list of nominees had been on the Internet for a while [Spoiler alert: The list of nominees for Sunday's "Critics Choice Awards" is currently available.] So you could have spent your time in pursuits more to your liking, had you Googled.

No one says that about Michelle Yeoh. Her speech was good. No to Cate!

R280 I hope the piano player beat the shit out of Yeoh after the show.

Golden Globes pianist Chloe Flower reveals she was NOT the one trying to play off winners during speeches... after Michelle Yeoh told her to 'shut up' and jokingly threatened to 'beat' her

I don’t think the list of celeb attendees was pitiful. Most of the winners including Farrell and Butler were there. Spielberg was there. The big TV people were there like Mike White/Ryan Murphy. Chris Rock as host would have helped.

The classically-trained pianist wrote on Twitter 'I would never play piano over people’s speeches!! I’m only playing when you see me on camera!'
| by Anonymous | reply 284 | January 13, 2023 6:13 AM |
Carmichael said at least once that it wasn’t the pianist playing people off.

Just my opinion, but it's getting harder and harder to watch award shows the GG and CCA because of all the possible options for viewing. I don't have Hulu, Paramount+, or PrimeVideo so I don't have the ability to see the some of the shows/movies that were nominated. Lately, watching the awards shows is like watching Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve or the Grammys. It's a veritable who the fuck is that parade!
| by Anonymous | reply 288 | January 13, 2023 2:49 PM |
R286, you've slammed Carmichael at least 20 times in these GG threads.

R289 is one of those lunatics who thinks it’s just one single commenter who says anything they don’t agree with, everyone agrees with them.
| by Anonymous | reply 290 | January 13, 2023 4:47 PM |
Not even close, R290--it's easy to see just how many comments R286 has made. It's gone from stating an opinion to a full-fledged vendetta.
| by Anonymous | reply 291 | January 13, 2023 4:58 PM |
WOW - at the Oscars, Will Smith walks up on stage and slaps the host Chris Rock across the face.
At the Golden Globes this week, winner Michelle Yeogh tells the piano player to 'shut up' or else she'll beat her. Of course, she was joking but she could have used a different choice of words (joking or not) to get her message across. Yet she chose to go with violence. Keep it classy !
The Awards ceremony are officially Ghetto Land now, and there's no turning back since we've deemed it acceptable.

Euphoria is the greatest high school show ever. You elders can't fathom high school life post 1989. And even that decade is foreign to you.

and you can't probably fathom what NYC was like in the 90s partying and hanging out at the Limelight, The Tunnel, Roxy, Jackie 60. Universal Grill, Splash, Pyramid, Webster Hall . . .

| by Anonymous | reply 312 | January 15, 2023 4:29 PM |
R309, you are correct my friend but that's not the assertion being made. Euphoria is one of the most accurate depictions of high school I have ever seen on television. Many here say the show sucks. I was born in the late 80s. Euphoria is my high school in a suburban setting a decade and half later.
| by Anonymous | reply 313 | January 15, 2023 5:09 PM |
Yeah Euphoria is not bad at all. It’s over the top at times but these types of teenagers really exist. Unfortunately
