Golden Gate Bridge jumpers studied
Harper Scott
Interesting article. They’re FINALLY installing a net underneath the bridge.

I thought the net was installed years ago.

They will just go somewhere else to jump or find another way to commit suicide.
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 30, 2022 9:50 PM |
Um that isn’t the point of the article r4. I think that is more than obvious.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 30, 2022 9:51 PM |
R5- No, the point is to catch them in the net and then use them for a food source. Shortages coming up , you know.

The safety net was the dumbest waste of money ever. Pretty soon the toll is going to be $20...

If they just had the complete box set of the Golden Girls, they never would have killed themselves.

Cut and paste it for the cretins please
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 30, 2022 10:04 PM |
R4, that's not true. Look at the study on gas oven suicides in Britain. When they got rid of the gas ovens people didn't just "find another way" to commit suicide, the suicide rate went down
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 30, 2022 10:05 PM |
People will be jumping for fun. Tik Tokers. Insta Hoes.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 30, 2022 10:07 PM |
I agree it could prevent some of them from commiting suicide, but if a person has made up their mind they will find a way.
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 30, 2022 10:07 PM |
R13, again, that's not true.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 30, 2022 10:08 PM |
The net sound fun! I might try it out.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 30, 2022 10:08 PM |
R16, here's a bit about it

The idiots taking selfies will the ones needing to be pulled from the nets.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 30, 2022 10:11 PM |
Suicide attempted gets caught in the net & saved by a nearby driver. This sounds like a rom-com to me!

Dumbasses too lazy or scared to click and read Op’s article from the San Francisco Newspaper. Ugh!

^^ it's paywalled, Lenny.

r4 has been disproven in various studies.
Most suicidal people have a "preferred" method and if you cut them off from that method, they generally don't look for another.
| by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 30, 2022 10:37 PM |
OK, just to play devil's advocate.
Why, R6, do you implicitly object to suicide? If someone really wants to end their life, presumably b/c they're terribly unhappy, why is it morally good to stop them from it?
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 30, 2022 10:40 PM |
r27 were you responding to me (r26)?
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 30, 2022 10:41 PM |
Jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge (I've read a lot about it) 1) dangers anyone below that could be hit by the falling body 2) traumatizes unwitting onlookers, who often witness the jump, and 3) is a fucking horrible way to die, all things considered. If you believe that society should be humane and accept suicide as a viable alternative to living, great. But there are more humane ways to do it than leaving this suicide magnet open (and inviting) to potential jumpers
My thoughts about suicide have no bearing on the belief we should take reasonable measures to prevent people from jumping from this, and other, suicide hot spots

Sorry, r30 is meant for r29
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 30, 2022 10:49 PM |
So you approve of suicide, but not this manner, is that right? What manner would you approve of?
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 30, 2022 10:52 PM |
I am undecided, r32. I see arguments for both sides. I have been suicidal many times in my life (bipolar disorder) and have been hospitalized several times. I've probably read more about depression, bipolar disorder, and suicide over my life than I read to write my doctoral dissertation in literature. It's a complicated topic -- morally, medically, psychologically, philosophically. I have no answers, only musings.
Personally, though, my fear is that someday, something will happen that will feel like the last straw in that moment and the despair will overwhelm me. It's been a long fucking battle. I'm tired. And I just feel like there is going to come a time when I won't be able to handle it anymore.
And it both pisses me off and scares me, because I genuinely enjoy life and being alive. I would rather not die by suicide, if I had my druthers.

Thanks for your considered reply, R33. I agree it is a complex and morally ambiguous subject.

🎶 Suicide is painless...🎵☠

R27, many people who commit suicide aren't in their right mind and aren't thinking rationally ( people who attempted suicide by jumping off a bridge and survived say they instantly regretted their decision the second they jumped)
I do feel differently for terminally ill people or very elderly people who are going to die soon anyway
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 30, 2022 11:09 PM |
R36, it worked for me. 🖕

Wish they'd do something in the hot spots around Niagara falls. There's some spots where the bodies are sunken, never to be seen again. Despite all the suicides, it's rarely brought up because it's so routine. They put suicide hotline phones in but not in every popular spot.

I have had people in my family commit suicide. We practically sat on my cousin and watched her like a hawk 24/7 for weeks. She succeeded anyway. I know that with some if you can " sit on them" for awhile they will not do it. It is a completely impulsive act for some. But there are others who have completely made their minds up to do it and nothing one does will prevent it.

R33- I'm so sorry that you have had to suffer. Someone very close to has BD and it is brutal. I commend your strength.

Thanks r40. I appreciate your kind words

Well, when it's time to go, it's time to go! ☠⚰
| by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 30, 2022 11:25 PM |
You’d think that more nonbinary people would jump. They’re definitely not all there mentally.
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 30, 2022 11:30 PM |
The spike in mental illness is both frightening and heartbreaking. We also have increased homelessness and poverty which is making people feel hopeless and desperate. This country has turned into a third world dystopian hell. I am desperately trying to get a prescription for either pain meds or benzos. I am only a whisper away from homelessness and I am poor and disabled with MS. I do not wish to die, but I refuse to suffer.

My mother seriously attempted suicide a couple times. My sister made one half assed attention seeking attempt. I'd gladly see her succeed but sadly she just isn't great at self motivation and follow through.

I still wish I'd never watched the documentary The Bridge

Why does this seem like a Wile E. Coyote attempt?
I picture the net just serving to slice the jumper into bite-sized shark cubes.

I watched that documentary, it was heartbreaking.

This is what’s ignored in the gun control arguments. The most likely person to be killed by a gun is yourself or your wife -it basically facilitates suicide. States with lenient gun laws have higher suicide rates - because guns are such an effective, efficient, irrevocable way to kill yourself.
