Glenn Close stories!
Robert Spencer
...re: r264- makes me wonder how her daughter will handle fame. She wants to do more acting, has a part in Glenn's upcoming film, etc. and yet has a total disdain for the people who help keep their careers relevant!
I know fame can be annoying. I know celebrity culture is stressful, and that the expectation to look good and talk to these people all the time seems silly. BUT! We (and they) ought to try to see the bigger picture... For instance, as annoying as some autograph hunters may be, they do serve a purpose---they bring a gift to fans who aren't lucky enough to be able to meet their star, they bring a sense of excitement to some bedridden person out there who might look at that framed autograph that he/she ordered on ebay or wherever, as their prized possession. Or, perhaps someone buys it as a gift for their loved one who would have no other guarantee of getting an autograph otherwise. So, when taking this into consideration, it really makes the stars who refuse to sign more than one photo look really bad, as well as the people who belittle the autograph hunters---because they do serve a purpose, like it or not.
Another thing to consider is the livelihoods of the people involved. We must remember that these people that the stars and their families like to think of simply as pests may depend heavily on the kindness of the stars, for their very livelihoods---in much the same way that indie film peddlers depend on the kindness of investors. It's all a web of interdependency, all part of the same big business.
Another thing stars tend to complain about (and even Glenn has said a few words about this) is the fashion industry and how they impact celebrity culture and therefore the jobs of actors and actresses. Many actors and actresses complain that their job now includes being a fashion model. But, they need to understand that this has been the case with stars ever since the advent of full-length motion pictures. It has to do with the level of outreach that one movie can have, which is full of potential. Recognizing that potential, many different industries looked to harness the power of it, by interweaving their product into the film – and that includes the close the stars wear.
Contrary to what most actors and actresses like to believe, it's not just about the art of acting – films are about art in all its forms, which includes music, fashion, furnishings, etc. etc. So, is it really any surprise that stars are not only expected to act, but appreciated for being human manikins as well?
It may be annoying, but stars need to understand that many people are depending on them – if they don't where the close and mention the fashion designer on the red carpet, that person may not get the money that they are depending on for their next project. That designer may not be able to stay in business. If stars don't pose for pictures like they are asked, that photographer doesn't earn his wages. If stars aren't time to reporters, those reporters don't get the story, and therefore, but they don't stay in business.
Many people are depending on the kindness of these stars. Not only the fans, but many people in and out of the business sector, and in and out of their own lives – depend on their kindness. So, to see anyone related to that star acting annoyed shows me that not only do most people lack the full comprehension of what it all means, but they lack the foresight to even care about how their reactions could affect these people's lives.
So again, it is very unfortunate for me to see this, knowing what it really means – when looking at the bigger picture. That's why I'm pleased to see Glenn at least friendly enough not to turn most of these people away. I just wish most people would understand what all this really means. It's not as simple as being annoying to a star.
