Getting drunk alone
Christopher Lucas
Why do people think this is so sad? I don’t drink very often but I consider it best to get drunk alone. It’s very relaxing and I love to watch movies when I’m drunk and alone.

I used to think that too. Until I gradually made my way up to putting away 2 bottles of wine every night.
i quit drinking altogether 19 days ago. So glad I did, however, i know i have some liver damage which i hope will heal. I've quit in the past and had an ache in that area which went away pretty quickly, but here i am almost 3 weeks later and i'm still in some major pain (front of my body which radiates to the back as well on my right side).
If you're only doing it every so often, no big deal. If you're getting drunk and passing out every night, I think you should probably look at why. You can get edibles or smoke and do significantly less damage to your body and brain then you are (possibly) doing with alcohol.
Be honest with yourself, and wishing you well.

I love drinking and watching a movie.

I think it's great and in the morning you only have to apologize to yourself for all the stupid shit you said 😜

When I drank, it was my favorite thing too.
Oh, and a drunk is a drunk whether they drink alone or at a bar or somewhere else. And a non drunk is a non drunk whether they drink alone or at a bar or somewhere. Those dumb "rules" of imbibing are so silly.

R2 is right. It's not that it's thought to be sad, it's that it's perceived as a slippery slope. Take care, OP.

There's drunk and there's drunk.
Do you mean pleasantly buzzed? Or do you mean passing-out drunk? I don't think there's anything wrong with the first. Given the solitary lives so many people lead these days, if you couldn't have a cocktail or two when you're alone, you'd never drink at all, and that would be depressing. Getting staggering drunk and passing out is a bad idea whether you're alone or in company.
If you find yourself drinking more and more, that's a bad sign. If you've had the same 2 drinks before dinner every night for 30 years without increasing the dose, so to speak, then as long there's no other reason to stop (e.g. medication or health condition where drinking is contraindicated), why not?

I think we need OP to explain how much/how often/pass out drunk or just buzzed?

It’s a terrible yet necessary evil for the modern homosexual.

Drunk or a glass of wine. I don’t ever like to get drunk at this stage of my life- alone or with people.

I drink every 3 or four months and when I do it will usually be a bottle of wine. I don’t pass out but am definitely buzzed. I’m never hung over the next day either.

I drink 2 and a half glasses of wine or vodka and tonic a day - alone or with others. They say I'm a heavy drinker and must stop. I say FUCK YOU.

I get why people go to bars to drink to meet people and socialize. But the ones who go there just to drink, (the bar flies who just sit at the bar) why not do it as home? It's safer and way cheaper.

“Ambience”. “Ritual”.

Gin and Dubonnet with every meal.

Part of it may be that for many people, alcohol is a social drug. I can keep a full liquor cabinet at home and beer and wine on hand and never touch it, never think to touch it unless I guests or some special occasion to celebrate with my partner. It's only something o enjoy doing in the company of others doing the same. A drink for someone's birthday, a promotion, just to catch up since seeing them last, perfect. A lazy afternoon on a roof terrace on a gorgeous day with friends with nothing to do and no place better to be but to talk and enjoy each other's company and have refreshing drinks, perfect.
There's an ingrained idea if alcohol as social lubricant. The idea of knocking back drinks on one's own with them purpose to get drunk isn't viewed so benignly.
You can argue the particulars of perception of social drinks vs. drinking alone, but that's the general assumption.
