Funniest Female Stand-up Comedian

Writer James Williams

We all know women are funnier than men, but which female comedian is the best?

Paula Poundstone is hilarious when she appears on talk shows as a guest. I have her comedy albums. Her comedic wit is razor sharp. You never know what she’s going to say, which is refreshing as other comedians do an interview as their character (Jeff Foxwothy is pathetic).

Forgot Janeane G although she rarely does stand up anymore. Ellen also used to be hilarious before she got her show and audiences became used to her personality.

Saw Margaret recently and she is ok, but a bit off her game now.

I thought Rita Rudner was a scream!

"My boyfriend cant tell me he loves me. Even when we place tennis, its "40- I like you a lot but want to see other people"

Damn, every one of those (living) comedians is well past her prime, except maybe Sykes who I'm not as familiar with. Who are the current female comedians at their peak of funniness?

Schumer sure had a short shelf life, huh? Her last special was painfully unfunny.

by Anonymousreply 4December 3, 2017 3:42 PM

R4 yeah Bamford isn't on there..good call!

by Anonymousreply 5December 3, 2017 3:46 PM

Yeah. The only ‘younger’ comedian male or female I’ve liked recently was John Mulaney. He’s now about 30? Trevor Noah was ok, but not your sides hurting from laughter good.

I assume they are out there and they just don’t reach me until they get big. Who or what breaks people now?

by Anonymousreply 7December 3, 2017 3:47 PM

I'm in the same boat, R7. For quite a while I haven't been paying much attention to stand-up, so I only know the people who really blow up like Kevin Hart and Gabriel Iglesias.

Recently I've been trying to catch up on the comedy world via Netflix, but I find so many of their specials to be mediocre. Decently funny, but a little hacky and not memorable. I did enjoy discovering Mulaney, especially the double act with Nick Kroll.

I suspect podcasts might be a good way to find the interesting and the up-and-comers; I finally got turned on to Maria Bamford through The Mental Illness Happy Hour (though I had heard of her before that) and I've been meaning to follow up on on some of the other guests from that show, and Maron's show.

Christopher Hitchens mumbling, fat lush.

I grew up only knowing Joan Rivers from Fashion Police and her work for E! doing awards shows. It wasn’t until a few years prior to her death that I discovered how insanely funny she was.

by Anonymousreply 12December 4, 2017 2:16 AM

I'm partial to Judy Tenuta

by Anonymousreply 13December 4, 2017 2:18 AM

Don't forget the other pioneers:

Phyllis Diller

Totie Fields

Moms Mabley

by Anonymousreply 14December 4, 2017 2:28 AM

Uh, you forgot a BIG one: Lens Dunham

by Anonymousreply 15December 4, 2017 2:29 AM

Joan Rivers better win this poll. She's a fucking legend and would easily wipe the floor with the rest of this shitty list of has beens and never weres (Amy Schumer, looking at you).

by Anonymousreply 18December 4, 2017 2:36 AM

current crop, I like iliza shlesinger

by Anonymousreply 19December 4, 2017 2:36 AM

Where's MY name ya fuckin' homos?!?!?!?

by Anonymousreply 20December 4, 2017 2:58 AM

Mixing dead and living comediennes is sort of weird though OP

by Anonymousreply 21December 4, 2017 3:00 AM

Roseanne was good at stand up. Best were Joan Rivers and Phyllis Diller. Have never liked Wanda Sykes.

by Anonymousreply 22December 4, 2017 3:05 AM

Sarah and Amy are not stand-up comics. They're political commentators and they're boring as FUCK.

by Anonymousreply 23December 4, 2017 3:07 AM

Kathleen Madigan is funnier than any of those women (although they're not terrible).

by Anonymousreply 24December 4, 2017 3:17 AM

I saw Judy Tenuta live in S.F. a gazillion years ago, we were laughing so hard, nearly pissed our pants.

by Anonymousreply 25December 4, 2017 3:59 AM

Kathy Griffin is a great storyteller. Loads of energy. And she's funny. Hope she comes back. I would hate to think that she's gone because of that disgusting pig Trump. Kathy deserves to be back on stage.

by Anonymousreply 26December 4, 2017 4:26 AM

Whatever happened to Amy Schumer?

by Anonymousreply 27December 4, 2017 4:29 AM

Kathleen Madigan is always funny

Half of the women aren't even funny. This poll is shit.

by Anonymousreply 31December 4, 2017 5:41 AM

Joan Rivers is dead, so she shouldn't be included.

by Anonymousreply 32December 4, 2017 5:43 AM

R25 Yes Judy Tenuta!, who said prison will eventually turn any man gay, but she had a flight attendant recently who probably only needed a parking ticket!

by Anonymousreply 33December 4, 2017 1:02 PM

Female comedy died with the leg and that was Linda Smith

by Anonymousreply 34December 4, 2017 2:40 PM

Donna Mcphail (lezza) used to be amazingly good but fell off the earth. Rona Cameron (sp?) was decent and also disappeared. Yet safe mediocrities like Housewives favourite Sue Perkins prevail!

by Anonymousreply 36December 4, 2017 2:46 PM

I've blocked the stupid spamming cunt at R30 who has been posting that same fucking GIF in EVERY motherfucking thread I've read this morning. ENOUGH!

by Anonymousreply 37December 4, 2017 2:53 PM

I recently watched Ali Wong's special on Netflix. She was pretty good! Not terribly original, but strong timing and delivery. Started watching an Iliza Shlesinger but couldn't get into it. Gonna try Anjelah Johnson tonight.

by Anonymousreply 38December 9, 2017 7:50 PM

Anjelah Johnson is very funny too but I think some female comics are funnier to women than to men much like straight guys think jim gaffigan is funny and black people like Kevin Hart.

by Anonymousreply 39December 9, 2017 9:09 PM

I thought the Anjelah Johnson special was just okay. She's one of those comics who is 75% attitude and only 25% jokes, which isn't my favorite style.

An example of the competition when Joan was starting out:

Paula Poundstone has an NPR podcast, "Live from the Poundstone Institute," that I've been enjoying. If you like "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" you might like this one.
