It depends on how one defines close.

I will say, though, of straight men.. I've noticed those with fewer friends tend to have an overly paranoid and needy frau that would rather try to parent them than be in relationships with them. Fewer male social activities are approved for men in relationships with women. They tend to believe everything is an excuse for cheating or at the very least, bashing women. And also, the small town to rural dynamics have also shifted into ultra nuclear family modes where couples are expected to focus 24/7 on one another to be considered legit and stable. They have to be an absolutely caricature of the "we" couple. The only mild to moderately positive trend has been those couples that obsess on love languages that seemingly opens up the door to necessary communication.

And the incel weighs in at r1

by Anonymousreply 2April 18, 2023 10:43 AM

r2 Yes, yes, everything that could be said about male issues is incel, everything said about female issues is feminism, morally good and light because women are fragile little creatures yet superior to all, just ask them.

r1 yes, yes, women aren't paranoid about their male partners, their male partners create this situation by not understanding their privilege and historical abuse and mistreatment of women.. women are just protecting themselves from the most likely outcome when he says he's going on a business trip, or having a boys night. he's obviously cheating. he's possibly even gay. what if he gives you g.r.i.d? you've got to worry about the children, why oh why won't anyone think about the children?

it's because therapist are telling everyone to ditch everyone. Also, they tell people to act out and be rude. It is a mess.

r5 the second a couple counselor suggests the problem might be with the frau, she's out of there.

by Anonymousreply 6April 18, 2023 10:56 AM

R5 yeah, It’s great that people are talking about narcissism and cutting out toxic people - Problem is, these younger generations think you’re toxic if you disagree with them

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2023 1:54 PM

If I cut out so-called toxic people, I wouldn't have anyone left!

by Anonymousreply 8April 18, 2023 1:59 PM

R7 and R8 Amen to that. If there's one lesson I've learned as I've aged, it's that you have to accept some level of BS from others, or accept being lonely. Sure you can cut people out for feeling used or having some fucked up opinions, but better be serious because making new friends as an adult is not only tough, but you'll be hard pressed to find friends that don't piss you off once in awhile.

and nothing simple is ever discussed, such as, limiting time with a particular person. It is everyone, gut everyone.

If you are not worshiped all the time, then they (the others) are toxic. The word toxic is not really a psychology term, but it is used all the time by master-level talk therapists and life coaches. None of these people have any social skills. These people are blowing up so many people's lives.

Why not this, limit time with people, if you are the difficult one? Why not ending a type of relationship with grace and maturity, such as, a marriage that is not working? These so-called professionals have no social skills at all, ZERO.

My favorite Lauren Bacall quote: "If you want to be happy, you need two things: good health and a short memory."

I'll guess that some of you fat whores have Apple News+ or similar, and don't realize that NYT articles are not available to nonsubscribers.

My life as a loner started when I went on disability for 13 months. If you are on paid disability with my company you are only allowed to go to the grocery store, the doctors office and the drug store. I had zero social life for over a year and realized I didn't mind it, in fact I preferred it. When my disability ran out I retired. Friends are over rated.

R6 There's truth to that. I have a friend who's a therapist and she said she has so many couples where the woman has dragged the guy in there to more or less "tell" on him, not unlike a visit to the Principal's office.
