Farrah Fawcett

Writer Robert Guerrero

Even though she received Emmy nominations for her tv work do you think she deserved an Oscar nomination for her riveting work in Extremities? She got a golden globe nomination for it but I think she is more deserving than Kathleen Turner or Sigourney Weaver who did get nominations. Maybe the subject matter (terrorizing her rapist) was deemed too much by the actors branch.

by Anonymousreply 73June 25, 2019 12:47 AM

Her start as a pin up girl in Charlie's Angels (as well as her trying to bail on the show after one year) made it difficult for Farrah to ever be taking seriously.

Seems like awards were not in her destiny. She did better work with TV (Burning Bed, Small Sacrifices).

I don't think they were so impressed with Extremities since she was cast after playing the roll off Broadway for a long time (or was it ON Broadway).

by Anonymousreply 1April 21, 2017 4:49 PM

Farrah was an outstanding actress. She should have won for The Burning Bed.

by Anonymousreply 2April 21, 2017 4:56 PM

She wasn't playing a croissant r1

by Anonymousreply 3April 21, 2017 4:58 PM

Fawcett never played it on stage that I know of. That was Susan Sarandon.

by Anonymousreply 4April 21, 2017 5:12 PM

R4, Fawcett took over for Sarandon in the off-Broadway play. Lauren Hutton, btw, did the original Los Angeles production.

by Anonymousreply 5April 21, 2017 5:18 PM

She should have stuck to dazzling people with her sparkling teeth and her nipples.

by Anonymousreply 6April 21, 2017 5:18 PM

Wonder how Fawcett got the part over Sarandon in the movie version?

by Anonymousreply 7April 21, 2017 5:22 PM

I saw both Sarandon and Fawcett in the play Off-Broadway (in the latter case it was mostly out of curiosity). Fawcett did well, but Sarandon was definitely better. However, it's not a great piece of writing to begin with, though it works better on stage than on film.

Fawcett got the movie role because it was a pretty low-budget film for a small-ish company called Atlantic Releasing that went under in the early 90's. Sarandon probably didn't want to do the film for little money, while Fawcett was trying to be taken more seriously as an actress.

I don't agree that she would have been more deserving than Weaver for ALIENS or Turner for PEGGY SUE. The latter is Turner's best performing IMO, and certainly ALIENS is among Weaver's best. I suppose you could trade Fawcett for Sissy Spacek in CRIMES OF THE HEART as Spacek was largely borrowing from her performance in the first half of 3 WOMEN.

by Anonymousreply 8April 21, 2017 5:32 PM

I saw Extremities in previews with Sarandon. Ellen Barkin was one of the roommates. Sarandon was outstanding.

I went back later to see Fawcett. She was good, for Fawcett, but hadn't really developed a stage voice and didn't compare to Sarandon. The audience so badly wanted Fawcett to succeed that they gave her a standing ovation when at the curtain call. It was undeserved. Fawcett had been hot again coming off a couple Emmy noms, Sarandon's movie career has slowed a bit which would explain them offering it to Fawcett at the time. She was better in the movie, but not close to being Oscar-worthy. To me, even when doing her best work, I could just never find her convincing and never forgot who I was watching. I think her best tv role was Small Sacrifices, because her character was cold and calculating. It seemed to fit her well. Many years later, she was very good in supporting roles as Richard Gere's wife in Dr. T and the Women, and Robert Duvall's wife in The Apostle. She got a Spirit nomination for that.

by Anonymousreply 9April 21, 2017 5:37 PM

She probably never got the Oscar nom because Extremities was so similar to The Burning Bed. Abused women getting revenge.

by Anonymousreply 10April 21, 2017 5:48 PM

Love Fawcett, but her work in "Extremities" was not Oscar caliber, nor was the movie adaptation that good. But as noted above, there's a stronger argument to be made regarding her Emmy losses -- there were probably one or two times when she deserved win the award.

[R8]: I don't think you can dismiss Spacek so easily in "Crimes of the Heart." Fonda, Turner, and Weaver were not going to win -- weak movie, "light" comedic performance, and sci-fi movie, respectively -- which left Matlin and Spacek. Going into the 1986 awards, Matlin was definitely not a lock -- it very easily could have gone Spacek's way.

by Anonymousreply 11April 21, 2017 6:01 PM

Farrah was okay, but really no actress compared to Jacklyn Smith and the amazing depths she was able to get to!

by Anonymousreply 12April 21, 2017 6:20 PM

Op here. I barely remember Turners work in Peggy Sue. And Weavers performance was good but let's face it the Aliens and the spectacle of the film were the real stars there. I've seen Extremities a few times and Fawcetts work really sticks with me. Something about the rawness and ferocity of it. She was never gonna beat Matlin or Spacek. That year it really was a two woman race. I think the controversial nature of the film plus Fawcett being still seen as a tv actress probably doomed her chances.

by Anonymousreply 15April 21, 2017 6:53 PM

My two favorite Farrah projects were the miniseries POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL, and a TV movie called BETWEEN TWO WOMEN, where Farrah plays against Colleen Dewhurst as her bulldozer mother in law.

The whole thing is on line:

Passably attractive, but mostly all teeth and hair. No classic beauty by any stretch of the imagination. Thin, reedy voice that would barely carry. Couldn't act her way out of a paper bag. But she was a 'personality', I'll give her that.

by Anonymousreply 17April 21, 2017 7:10 PM

Who did Ryan O'Neal have to blow to get those noms for Farrah?

by Anonymousreply 18April 21, 2017 7:13 PM

While not classicly beautiful, Farrah was one of the most gorgeous, most photogenic women of the last 50 years. I'd rank her with Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe.

by Anonymousreply 19April 21, 2017 7:15 PM

Ryan did nothing to help out Farrah's career. If anything, it was the opposite after Farrah had achieved some respect and Ryan's career was on the downslide. Farrah gave up offers to do that shitty sitcom with Ryan just so he'd have a job. It lasted half a season. Soon after, they broke up.

by Anonymousreply 20April 21, 2017 7:17 PM

If you think Farrah was "passably attractive", R17, I'd hate to see what you consider merely cute.

by Anonymousreply 21April 21, 2017 8:55 PM

Lee majors and Ryan O'Neal were gay. Why would fawcett beard unless she was gay too?? If people were awake, they would have figured out who she was really intimate with. But no we have to have a thread about her merits as an actress.

by Anonymousreply 22April 21, 2017 9:03 PM

was she with Alana Hamilton Stewart then?

by Anonymousreply 23April 21, 2017 9:38 PM

I was never a Farrah fan, but I thought she was excellent in the movie version of Blood and Money, retitled Murder in Texas.

I've always remembered seeing Farrah in a true story, made for TV movie called "Nazi Hunter: The Beate Klarsfeld Story". Riveting.

by Anonymousreply 25April 22, 2017 1:48 AM

The high point of Farrah Fawcett's career was appearing in an episode of The Flying Nun. It's hard to top that one.

by Anonymousreply 26April 22, 2017 1:50 AM

Ryan O Neal is not gay. Please. He's always been a total sleazebag with women, even hitting on his own daughter.

by Anonymousreply 27April 22, 2017 1:50 AM

Oh DEAR!! TAKING seriously? Playing the ROLE??

by Anonymousreply 28April 22, 2017 2:20 AM

I should have a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Kramer vs. Fucking Kramer!!!

by Anonymousreply 29April 22, 2017 2:25 AM

Kathleen Turner was terrific in "Peggy Sue Got Married" and many considered her a front-runner at the Oscars that year.

The consensus was that Farrah was good onstage in "Extremeties", but Sarandon was outstanding. I don't remember there ever be any Oscar buzz about Farrah's performance in the film.

by Anonymousreply 31April 22, 2017 3:08 AM

Flash in the pan - Last required appearances on "Charlies Angel's" barely registered any interest. Leaving a hit series and not honoring her contract left a BAD taste in people's mouth. Meanwhile, Jaclyn Smith stays 5 years, does a zillions mini series to showcase her "acting" and partners with Kmart.

by Anonymousreply 32April 22, 2017 6:10 AM

No. It's a terrible movie.

by Anonymousreply 33April 22, 2017 6:54 AM

shame she got the doodie cancer

by Anonymousreply 34April 22, 2017 7:35 AM

Farrah Fawcett is a MAJOR DRIP

by Anonymousreply 35April 22, 2017 7:43 AM

Poor thing had to go and die the same day as Michael Jackson. Robbed of the spotlight.

by Anonymousreply 36April 22, 2017 2:38 PM

She sadly brought a great deal of her heartache to herself. She left Charlie's Angels, She left Lee Majors, She left Jay Bernstein - very unappreciative of her success. She could have stayed with Lee who loved her BEFORE the stardom, honor her contract and still film movies. She was offered the Goldie Hawn roll in "Foul Play" She alienated Hollywood and hooked up with men who really didn't have her back. James Cameron, Ryan O'Neil, even her own sone, Redmond.

I always thought less of Farrah when she ran away with Rain and knew that his children were left alone at home to raise themselves. She was not the America's Sweetheart"

Yeah, she will REALLY be missed after watching that clip!

by Anonymousreply 39May 9, 2017 7:01 AM

That was almost all her lines in the entire movie! Still it was a big break for her just to be in a movie.

by Anonymousreply 40May 9, 2017 7:21 AM

I liked seeing Farrah, Cheryl Ladd, and Jaclyn Smith in episodes of the Partridge Family.

by Anonymousreply 41May 9, 2017 7:23 AM

Farrah was with James Cameron before or after he was with me???

by Anonymousreply 42May 9, 2017 12:30 PM

Farrah was not a lesbian. My male cousin who was 20 at the time and a solid 10+ fucked her in her suite at the Copley Plaza in Boston in the late 70s(he delivered her room service.) She may have become bisexual at some point, but she was fucking men when she was married to Majors.

by Anonymousreply 43May 9, 2017 1:05 PM

R43 Great story!

R16 I'm dying to watch all of Poor Little Rich Girl. I've bee. Looking for it online for years to no avail. Someone posted part 1 on YouTube but not the rest. I'm about to watch the movie you posted though!

Totally. So underrated.it's ROLE. I keep reading ROLL.

Wtf.

by Anonymousreply 46May 9, 2017 1:56 PM

T & A television, Partridge Family episode, nipple poster, and suddenly she's an "Actress" She does a number of BAD movies - "Saturn 3?" WTF was she thinking? Years go by and she's back on network series "Good Sports" and gets CANCELLED. Does Playboy and a Playboy video where she paints naked w/ her body. This bitch was delusional

by Anonymousreply 47May 9, 2017 4:47 PM

Yeah I fucked Farrah. She was no lesbian. My brother fucked her, too.

by Anonymousreply 48May 9, 2017 4:59 PM

Not much of an actress in my opinion

by Anonymousreply 49May 9, 2017 5:05 PM

Farrah was BIG in her day - the face that launched a thousand magazine covers. She was everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 50May 9, 2017 8:27 PM

Best Actress that year was the Oscar equivalent of the Miss America pageant the year one deaf contestant did a dance number to the music in her head. The other girls looked at each other and said, "We might as well go home."

In her book, Marlee acts like Kathleen was the frontrunner and she was shocked to win. Her being humble, perhaps, but revisionist bullshit. It was always Marlee.

Sorry, Farrah was beyond limited, probably because she was so nuts. Acting is so much about honesty and being willing to "go there" and I think she would only go so far, only go so ugly but not all the way (see Cher in "Silkwood" who really had to abandon vanity). Farrah was okay at best.

by Anonymousreply 52May 9, 2017 8:56 PM

(And long before Cher fucked up her career with hair product infomercials, Farrah was doing one for the Exer-Stick. Remember that? It was literally her jumping around with, yes, a stick. And we wonder why she wasn't taken seriously?)

by Anonymousreply 53May 9, 2017 8:57 PM

Farrah was strictly eye candy

by Anonymousreply 54May 9, 2017 9:54 PM

She is beyond eye candy in The Burning Bed. Her vulnerability in that role is breathtaking.

by Anonymousreply 55May 9, 2017 9:57 PM

Most Oscar winners haven't been this gritty.

My father beat me very much in this same way. She must've been an abuse victim herself because she was so agile and precise in her portrayal of an abuse victim and survivor.

PULEAZE - She must've been a professional skateboarder herself because she was so agile and precise in her portrayal of a former LAPD officer and private investigator...

Lol. That was a dumb assumption for me to make, R57.

by Anonymousreply 58May 10, 2017 4:19 AM

Farrah excelled in roles where she'd get the shit beaten out of her. Go figure.

by Anonymousreply 59May 10, 2017 7:19 AM

Did getting the shit beat out of her cause the ass cancer?

by Anonymousreply 60May 10, 2017 7:37 AM

She also couldn't even fucking raise her 1 damn kid. WTF? Farrah can't raise her only son? Too Busy taking a shit on someones lawn and posing with her eraser nips on Playboy.

by Anonymousreply 61May 10, 2017 8:06 AM

She was very well received in Extremeties off-Broadway. The show had been running a while first with Sarandon and then with Karen Allen who both got good reviews.

Fawcett came in to the show at a time when she had basically no career. It was considered a big surprise that she could act and was so good in the role.

She was probably inspired by Cher who had just found credibility as an actress on Broadway the year before.

by Anonymousreply 62May 10, 2017 9:30 AM

Wasn't she left out of the 'oh look, these ones are dead' bit of the Oscars when she died? I never understood that. She deserved to be mentioned.

by Anonymousreply 63May 10, 2017 12:46 PM

How many of you owned "Farrah's Glamour Center" back in the 70s? My sister received it one Christmas. As a young gayling, I used to play with it when nobody was home.

by Anonymousreply 65May 11, 2017 2:22 PM

Lee majors was gay. I think ryan O'Neal too.

by Anonymousreply 66May 14, 2017 6:10 PM

Sally fields was gay and had gay kid. She had a story about wanting to date Lee majors.

by Anonymousreply 67May 15, 2017 4:27 PM

Ryan O'Neal is not gay. He had quite a lot of ladies in his path.

The gay rumors came because he married a much older woman years ago but that was to get out of going to Vietnam.

by Anonymousreply 68May 16, 2017 3:25 AM

[quote]And long before Cher fucked up her career with hair product infomercials,

Oh god, how funny were those Cher & Lori Davis infomercials? And the SNL skits of them, with Christina Applegate as Cher, and Chris Farley as Lori Davis.

by Anonymousreply 69May 16, 2017 11:39 AM

R68 fawcett was beard for Lee majors. All actors are gay.

by Anonymousreply 70May 22, 2017 4:03 PM

Ryan O'Neal gay? You can't be serious!!
