OP, I'm not a huge fan of Fantasia's original music, but I've seen her on Broadway twice -- she was absolutely searing in The Color Purple. She left EVERYTHING on the stage -- as an untrained actress, that had to have been emotionally draining for her. And, then, years later in the much lighter, but very charming After Midnight in which she was the featured star, she sang 4 or 5 classic jazz and theatre songs from the 20s and 30s with aplomb. The material suited her so well. What I was struck by was that she was able to infuse each number with just a touch of modern r n b styling while still staying true to the spirit of the songs.

Thanks OP. This was an iconic performance. In addition to the vocals, it was a total mind-fuck to the competition. "I've beaten you standing up, now I'm going to beat you sitting down".
