Emma Stone
Daniel Martin
Is she the new Katharine Hepburn? She has two best actress Oscars.

I don’t think anyone can become the new Hepburn (or the new Streep) because the culture now doesn’t want a dominant white woman.
That being said, I could see Emma winning again because of her age and popularity.

That's two undeserved Oscars she's gotten.

The inevitable backlash is coming her way.

She deserved #2…#1is still a no go.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 11, 2024 4:48 PM |
She'll be fine. The industry obviously respects and likes her, and she's managed her career brilliantly up to this point. Emma Stone is not going anywhere.
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 11, 2024 5:30 PM |
She scalped an Injun, so she is a MAGA darling.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 11, 2024 5:37 PM |
I love Emma but her performance in La La Land wasn't really Oscar worthy. Last nights win was well deserved. I was able to see her in Cabaret on Broadway about 10 years ago and that's when I realized she's the real deal.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 11, 2024 5:42 PM |
I think she's perfectly marvelous!
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 11, 2024 5:54 PM |
She's taken many more risks than Hepburn was offered/accepted. She also seems pretty down to earth and didn't expect to win last night.
I haven't seen her TV series "The Curse" but it's also got rave reviews so she's going to keep on going for the time being.
I wonder how her contemporary Jennifer Lawrence feels being cast into the dust as the former it-girl

| by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 11, 2024 6:02 PM |
I thought the dress she wore was horrible, that color! puke!
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 11, 2024 6:04 PM |
In hindsight Sally Hawkins should have won for The Shape Of Water but Frances had the who nascent me too movement on her side with the character she played in Three Billboards.
Bit like The Academy wanting to reward Ingrid Bergman again for MOTOE, unfortunately that cost her a third for Autumn Sonata 4 years later.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 11, 2024 6:07 PM |
They gave Emma legend status with two wins (similar to Fonda, Foster, Field and Lange), but now the rest is up to her.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 11, 2024 6:13 PM |
Lange doesn’t have two Leads.
| by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 11, 2024 6:25 PM |
I’ve only seen The Help and Zombieland: Double Tapped, so I suspect I’m not in the best position to judge.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 11, 2024 6:32 PM |
There's an effortlessness to her as an actress and a person.
And she doesn't seem to interested in picking the "right" star vehicle. She just does what she likes and so far that's really worked. She's had big hits (Cruella), misses (Battle of the Sexes), blockbusters (Spiderman), romcoms (Easy A) and Oscar-y films (La La, Birdman, The Favorite, Poor Things).
And she's been really good in nearly all. She seems to have conviction in everything she does and that shows. People like watching that and, just as importantly, people like working with her because of that.
I like JLaw, but you can tell her "drink beer and fart" routine was a little true, but mostly embellishment. With Emma it really seems like what you see is what she is.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 11, 2024 6:35 PM |
Not bad for someone who started out in a reality TV series about THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
She won the role of 'Laurie Partridge' in the competition, but THE NEW PARTRIDGE FAMILY series was ultimately not picked up.

r25 So it must be asked -- has Susan Dey commented?
| by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 11, 2024 6:43 PM |
So Emma is better than Jessica Lange. Okay then.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 11, 2024 6:44 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 11, 2024 6:51 PM |
R29 it has nothing to do with it. Sometimes they just give a performance The Academy want to reward and they best the competition. If Lange had made Frances in almost any other year of the 80s she would have won. On the reverse, if Blue Sky has come out olin almost any other year of the 90s she would have lost. Sometimes its all in the timing.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 11, 2024 6:51 PM |
I like her quite a bit and I'm glad she won.
However, that hair color and hairstyle was NOT great. Ditto on the dress.
I forgive her. LOL

Unlike Hillary Swank, Stone really only deserve the one Oscar, the one she won last night.
The Lalaland victory is still a head scratcher to me. It must feel like a very hollow victory indeed when you’re awarded an Oscar over Isabelle Huppert. Pretty meaningless, I’d say.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 11, 2024 7:33 PM |
LaLaLand looked stupid; therefore, I've never seen it.
| by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 11, 2024 7:34 PM |
Katherine Hepburn would never show her tits and beaver in a movie so I'm going to say "no."
| by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 11, 2024 7:39 PM |
I'd love it she won a Best Actress Oscar playing Bradley Cooper in 'The Bradley Cooper Story.'
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 11, 2024 7:40 PM |
R37 and I will make a comeback playing Bradley's mama.
| by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 11, 2024 7:45 PM |
She seems like a nice person but she's incredibly overrated as an actress. Sandra Hueller was robbed. She now has two undeserving wins albeit Poor Things is slightly better than La La Land. She does have the Hillary Swank curse to worry about and it seems like she's only doing work with Yorgos these days. However, she seems generally well liked so I think she's relatively safe.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 11, 2024 7:49 PM |
I'm so glad Hilary Swank came along.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 11, 2024 7:51 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 11, 2024 7:55 PM |
R40, Emma Stone has a few other nominations (Birdman, The Favourite), plus has a few hit movies. Even if her career ended today, she already has far surpassed Hilary Swank in terms of awards recognition and movie stardom.
But you never know how Academy recognition can play out. If someone said after the ceremony in 1996 that Susan Sarandon, Jessica Lange and Emma Thompson were in all likelihood done earning nominations and Jodie Foster would have to wait almost thirty years for her next one, few would believe it. Even Tom Hanks had a nearly twenty year gap between nominations. There's no guarantee that Emma Stone will be a regular fixture at the Oscars, even if she does continue doing good work.
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 11, 2024 8:16 PM |
R40 Emma has starred in really big movies in a variety of genres (Spider Man, Cruella, Easy A). She's also been nominated multiple of other times in smaller films. She's starred in a critically successful TV limited series.
She's already had a fantastic career and is light years bigger than Swank ever was.

Given that she now has more best actress Oscars than Cate Blanchett, I can’t see her winning again for a long, long time. She was great in Poor Things but it was a one of a kind role. Maybe in her 40’s or later if she stays popular.
Only two BIPOC have won best actress since 2000.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 11, 2024 8:36 PM |
I've always been neutral on her, but the one-two punch of "The Curse" and "Poor Things" has made me a fan. Two great performances that are very different from one another.
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 11, 2024 8:49 PM |
That deep voice of hers is very off-putting.
| by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 11, 2024 9:02 PM |
R51 Her low-pitched husky voice is a result of having baby colic, a condition of chronic crying as an infant. It lasted six months and resulted in the development of nodules. She has calluses on her vocal cords as an adult.

I was watching an episode of "Medium" recently and she played a girl who "disappeared" herself after years of being sexually molested by her father.
"Medium" has a veritable "Who's Who" list of guest stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Rami Malek, David Carradine, Molly Ringwald, Rosanna Arquette (and other Arquettes), Willie Garson, Rumer Willis, Kelly Preston, Jay R Ferguson, Blythe Danner...the list goes on and on.

Swank was okay in MDB, but I never bought her for one second in Boys Don't Cry. And she's a rancid actress in general.

In 2010, Swank got a SAG nod for "Conviction" (alongside Annette Bening for "The Kids Are All Right").
And received Oscar buzz for "The Homesman" in 2014, but that movie flopped big time.

Emma is a versatile actress and her performance in "Poor Things" was one of the best of the year (the other for me was Sandra Hüller in "The Zone of Interest"). The Oscar was well-earned. For "La La Land"? Not really. That performance was pretty unexceptional. I do think she should've won Best Supporting Actress for "The Favourite", though—that was also a fantastic performance. She works very well with Yorgos Lanthimos.
| by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 12, 2024 1:31 AM |
I would agree that she has a wider range than KH, and doesn't take on roles solely as star vehicles. One of my favorite performances of hers was in "Maniac" on Netflix. Granted, I really enjoyed the bizarre, original show, but she was great in it.
A second random performance of hers was in one vignette/scene in "Movie 43." Completely ridiculously comical, but she was more than earnest.

Hepburn had a long, storied career with many great performances. Emma is what … 35? She’s nowhere near that level.
| by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 12, 2024 5:25 AM |
Katharine always played...Katharine. Let's be honest.
I'm not trying to take away from her and her talent, but she really didn't have much range. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my take.
| by Anonymous | reply 81 | March 12, 2024 5:28 AM |
Agree r81. John Wayne and Hepburn couldn’t have been more different, but at the same time they couldn’t have been more alike.
| by Anonymous | reply 82 | March 12, 2024 5:31 AM |
She could do screwball comedy and serious drama. Emma has never done a serious drama.
| by Anonymous | reply 83 | March 12, 2024 5:33 AM |
I do not get her appeal at all. She comes across as sexless, her voice is grating and distracting and her acting is nothing special. I don't find anything charismatic about her.
I remember watching The Favourite and thinking Rachel Weisz wiped the floor with her in every scene they shared yet during awards season she seemed to be the critics darling. I don't get it.
| by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 12, 2024 5:39 AM |

Jennifer seems to be one of DL's favorite punching bags but I think she's a damn good actress.
| by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 12, 2024 5:53 AM |
[quote] The Help, [R83]? I didn't see Birdman, but I believe this, also, wasn't a comedy
The Help was a Southern yarn riddled with frizzy hair, fried chicken and shit pies. Viola Davis was in a drama, Emma was in a coming of age romantic comedy.
Birdman was a highly ironic comedy-drama.
Jennifer Lawrence has several bad habits as an actor but she has more raw presence than Stone. As does Katharine Hepburn, for that matter, who had enormous gravity on screen.
| by Anonymous | reply 88 | March 12, 2024 6:00 AM |
R88, I'm curious as to what you consider JL's bad habits.
| by Anonymous | reply 89 | March 12, 2024 6:02 AM |
I think it's cute that she has 2. It's as fun and harmless as Sally having 2.
| by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 12, 2024 6:03 AM |
I don't think so, r88. But i think it's a bit of a rivalry, even though they are (best?) friends. JLaw over-saturated herself, and Emma has not. I believe Emma stretched herself quite a bit (The Favourite and this film as well).
Jennifer Lawrence was a hot babe who everyone loved for awhile, and then...POOF. Not there anymore. Also, I don't ever see JLaw doing a musical.
So, versatility wins.
| by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 12, 2024 6:06 AM |
R91, I think JLaw has taken on an eclectic variety of roles and I think she's been very effective in each and every one. To each his own I suppose.

Lily Gladstone’s much better performance in Killers of the Flower Moon will have more longevity than Emma’s overrated clown show in Poor Things.
Somebody tell Emma to ask Jamie Lee Curtis what the past year’s been like for her when the Oscars use you as an excuse to not be more diverse minded when it comes to their lead acting awards. 96 fucking years. The Oscars are trash!

R116, I wonder if Glenn is known as a real cunt behind the scenes? Is that why she's been nominated 8 times without winning?
| by Anonymous | reply 122 | March 13, 2024 6:52 AM |
R113: I think she will become a perennial nominee. She’s done big studio hits and low budget artsy films and unlike Hillary Swank and Sally Field, she had at least one nomination prior to her win. Still, she is staggeringly overrated and her speaking voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I don’t get the charm argument either. Her reaction to Lily winning the SAG award was so fake.
| by Anonymous | reply 123 | March 13, 2024 8:27 PM |
I think she is well liked in the industry because she is an actor's actor and there for "the craft" (I know, eyeroll), i.e., she's game for anything, will do high or low roles and is not necessarily looking for star vehicles, does well in collaborations (let's the other person shine, doesn't script hog, no obscene salary demands) and is easy going on set. Plus, she doesn't seem to be in it for the fame - I didn't even know she was married and had a kid until she mentioned it in her acceptance speech.
Instead of Swank or Fields, I see her career being akin to Paul Giamatti's in that she will be getting interesting roles for decades if she wants them.
| by Anonymous | reply 124 | March 13, 2024 8:44 PM |
R122 if you win the SAG I guess it indicates your fellow actors are behind you. The Academy is much wider than that and they can sometimes throw their weight behind another nominee.
I guess if Glenn was hated she wouldn't get nominated, especially for projects like Hillbilly or Albert Nobbs which didn't get strong reviews and she wasn't undeniable.
I am guessing JLO failing to be nominated for Hustlers might suggest she doesn't have support from The Academy as a whole.
| by Anonymous | reply 125 | March 13, 2024 8:45 PM |
Swank is such a weird case. The only two movies worth a damn in her filmography are the two that won her an Oscar.

I wonder if Emma is getting dragged on social media like Jamie Lee Curtis did last year.

Emma and AnnE both will show their titties before Julia and JLaw.

I'm guessing you haven't seen Poor Things, R135.

Everyone's seen JLaw's tits. And Anne and Emma.
Julia...are you talking Julia Roberts?
I don't think anyone cares to see those at this late date.

I think what you missed was that R35 is saying that Emma and Anne Hathaway will show you titties before JLaw and Julia who play coy with nudity ever would.

JLaw's tits have never been seen by her own approval. She doesn't do nudity in films. Anne and Emma don't give a shit. They are actors who sometimes need to get naked and they don't have a problem with it

Lawrence was fully nude, including shaved beaver, in her most recent film.

I've seen Lawrence's anus and strange flat vulva.
Emma is what I would want a daughter to be–she's well groomed, pleasant, intelligent, and looks to be happy. I've enjoyed watching her over the years and hope her career continues to flourish.

I knew she was married and had a kid but I didn’t know she had a daughter.

She knew the optics were not good: a heavily favored minority losing to somebody who has already been rewarded. I think she wanted to come across as silly and relatable with the dress bit. In fact, the dress didn't even look that broken to me.

The zipper had ripped open for at least a good 4-5".

I honestly don't think that Lily Gladstone did much in her role. She was very subtle and there wasn't much physical performance. Had she not been Native American nobody would be paying attention. Emma worked a lot harder at her role and seemed to carry the entire film.
Also, Carey Mulligan's performance in Maestro was much better than Lily's.

Who did Lily play in Maestro?

As long as Yorgos keeps making movies, she has a career.

R151 and R152 are the same person who bored us with his initial post about burning down the Academy.
Yeah, you still ain't got it.

The Academy really isn't that sentimental. SAG is more sympathetic to narratives.

[quote]Viola Davis was in a drama
Viola Davis is ALWAYS in a drama. If she was doing a Capital One commercial she'd be in a drama.
