Emergency! On CoziTV

Writer William Jenkins

Elder Gays, how many of you remember this show from the early to mid-70s? When I started watching it again recently, I was surprised at how quickly I remembered the very distinctive three -buzz alarm and the hospital name “Rampart” used constantly, which ultimately became a joke with me and a friend in the 80s.

What I didn’t know was that it was instrumental in promoting the training of firefighters as paramedics. Paramedics as a profession didn’t exist before the show but LA County decided to take a chance and the two-hour pilot basically showed the legal and practical challenges of early paramedic…ism.

Anyway, I’ve really enjoyed rewatching the shows but warning: MyPillow is an advertiser.

I remember that they were constantly telling them to put the patient on Ringers Lactate. I've worked in hospitals for over 30 years and have given out Lactated Ringers twice.

My wife used to watch this in reruns over summer break as a kid in the '90s and it was one of the shows that made her want to become a doctor. (She also had a crush on Dixie McCall.) We still watch it sometimes on Cozi TV and are occasionally scandalized by the way Kelly Brackett treated some of the patients, especially addicts.

R1 Lactated Ringers was ordered by Dr. Brackett in the previous episode but he then withdrew the order when Gage and DeSoto realized the patient had a chest injury.

R2 I’m watching a doc about it and many people say the same thing: that this show encouraged them to become a paramedic, doctor, or nurse.

Emergency is a lot of fun. If you watch 911 on Fox, you'll notice they've stolen almost every situation from Emergency and just shot them full of adrenaline. Minus the gay dads, of course.

The name Mantooth always makes me giggle.

R6 Me, too but he was such a fox.

They will order Ringers Lactate in every episode, even for a decapitation.

I remember Emergency well and had a crush on Mantooth. I also remember its spinoff Sierra, especially its memorable theme song. It only lasted one season, but I never forgot that song. Producer Jack Webb was unable to do for park rangers what he did for cops, detectives and paramedics, sadly.

I never thought Mantooth was hot.
