Eldergays ....do you remember Kaye Stevens?
Christopher Lucas
Brassy, redheaded singer/actress/comedienne.
Her 1962 album on Liberty Records, "(Not So) Great Songs (Which Were Left Out of) Great Movies (For Obvious Reasons)," includes such truly bizarre (but funny!) songs as "Splendor in the Grass (or, Lawn Parties Can Be Fun)," "Frankenstein (in 3/4 Time)," and "Judgement at Nuremburg (or, A Hun and His Honeybun)."

She was singer Jeri Clayton on Days of Our Lives.

I vaguely remember her because my mom borrowed a record of hers to play at a party (I think).

She tried to get traction on game shows in the 70s. Always seemed a little desperate & needy. Thought she was a bigger star than she was. Annoying. Kinda sad.

R3 She sounded pretty good until she started singing loud, then she was just ok.

I may or may not have thrown a punch at her.

Your mother knew Kaye Stevens well enough to borrow a record from her?

I like her but I think she needed a bra in the R3.

Here she is with The Temptations.

I don't recall her at all. That wasn't the music I was listening to at the time.

Cute video but, lord, that woman had not one ounce of rhythm under that I’ll-fitting gown.

I only know this cunt from Match Game. She was super obnoxious and loud and used to hang all over Richard Dawson and bray in his ear. She kept trying to pull focus to herself throughout the game. Brett couldn't stand her, and it was clear Gene had little patience for her.

I believe Kaye and Brenda Benet were in a club together.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 3, 2023 12:13 AM |
This nutjob. She was a Ronnie Reagan supporter when he was California governor. She took a full billboard ad for herself when appearing as Jeri Clayton on Days, that irked EP Betty Corday and NBC, and they fired her. She eventually came back to the show, not for long. I think she ended up with Jan and Paul Crouch. She was no Dusty Towne.

When I was 12 or so, George Kirby performed at my parents' country club. I got drafted into helping in the cloakroom because someone got sick and my parents controlled my life. Kirby tipped me 10 bucks and I thought he was the coolest guy in the world. Funny, too.
Kaye Stevens was not on the bill, alas.

I'm 57 and I don't recall her at all.
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 3, 2023 2:36 AM |
At 57, r22, she would have been a bit before your time.

Kaye had an odd feud with Joe Namath. She implied in the press that she and Joe were an item. Joe was a guest on a talk show at the time and refuted this, stating that the only thing he knows about Kaye Stevens is that he used to hear her records when he was a little boy.

Well, it's not like she went to "L".

While performing for troops in Vietnam, she gave each serviceman a pair of her trademark elbow-length gloves, telling them that, if they presented them anywhere where she was performing, their whole evening would be on her. Over the past 40 years, she has gotten almost two-thirds of those gloves back from grateful former servicemen. In later years she started a Christian ministry and devoted herself to that in Margate Florida. Shared the stage with Rat Pack members Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., frequently. Turned to religion following a period of alcoholism that damaged her career and ended her marriage. Traveled with Bob Hope to Vietnam in 1965 where they became friends. He included her in his book "Five Women I Love" and she sang at his funeral at the bequest of his wife, Dolores Hope. Got her first big career boost while performing in a lounge at the Riviera Hotel in Vegas, and ended up subbing for ill headliner Debbie Reynolds. Starred in such musicals as Mame, Gypsy, The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Annie Get Your Gun.
Following a Catholic funeral service she was interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando, Florida. Is a close friend of singer Connie Francis. Former husband Tommy Amato was a bandleader and trumpet player. They performed together in clubs throughout the East. Nightclub performer in Vegas and New York. Moved from Pittsburgh to Cleveland where she first performed as a singer and a drummer. Friend of Rhonda Glenn.

The Temptations were top performers, but in that video, they seem to just be going through the motions.
| by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 3, 2023 12:29 PM |
She annoyed me on Match Game, then I found out that Susan Seaforth Hayes couldn't stand her, which made her more interesting to me.

the TCB Supremes/Temps TV special was the top rated breakout show in 1968 / with number one album, etc...
and the poor Temps are given Kaye Stevens as a follow up in 1969? WTF?
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 3, 2023 12:40 PM |
She reminds me of Lypsinka if Lypsinka could sing.

I've recently started to get into old game shows that are posted on the YouTubes mostly because of threads on data lounge and I love them all but what I remember about her is that she's ruined every match game episode she was ever on she acted like Richard Dawson was fingering her under the desk

There was a period where she would shriek with laughter at every question Gene read out. I can't imagine that everyone on the panel didn't want to punch the shit out of her.
| by Anonymous | reply 34 | October 3, 2023 2:51 PM |
Her shrieking laughter doesn't start until midway through this clip. Richard and Gene are super irritated with her.

R36: Probably a special. They did a number of them, one was with the Supremes.
I vaguely remember her from game shows--one of those people whose fame was unclear.
| by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 3, 2023 3:18 PM |
She always struck me as the type of woman who accepted putting out as part of getting the gig.

Kaye got off on the wrong foot at Days when introduced to Frances Reid, then told Mac Carey Frances looked old enough to be HIS mother. She was kidding, but Fra heard and left Kaye off the guest list for the annual girls only party she'd throw at her Brentwood home. She also told people she was Emmy nominated for her part on Days, even though there was yet no supporting category for her to be nominated in. Bill Hayes had known Kaye for years, and it may have been his help that got her hired. Susan Seaforth Hayes was not happy that Kaye wanted to do a nightclub act with Bill that excluded Susan, so their rift probably started there.

Kaye was in Jaws 3-D. I have no memory of her in it. Guess I'll have to watch again.
| by Anonymous | reply 40 | October 3, 2023 6:12 PM |
Is any of that true R39? What does that remark about Frances Reid mean? What she a lez? Lavender marriage to actor Philip Bourneof? all those years?
Is anyone else a little "worried" that R27 knows so much about such an obscure performer? Who would believe we'd have a Kaye Stevens "stan" on DL?
I agree with you R5, especially with that "My Man" clip. She wasn't too bad at the beginning of the number when she was singing quietly; she actually conveyed the emotion pretty well. She lost me toward the end when she started screaming.
She might not have been awful in FG back in the day, with the right vocal coach and director. Couldn't have been worse than Beanie.

Her version of "My Man" has a bridge I have not heard before:
I don't know why I should
He isn't good
He can't be true
He beats me too
What can I do?

[quote]When I was 12 or so, George Kirby performed at my parents' country club.
What entrance did he use?
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 4, 2023 6:42 AM |
The main entrance. He did a hysterical set and, as i said, was a great tipper.
I thought I saw Kaye Stevens in a Jerry Lewis movie but per IMDB, it must have been the one she did with Danny Kaye. She played a nutcase and it was not until much later I learned she was supposed to be attractive and even glam.

What are we going to do with her Gene?
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 4, 2023 7:54 AM |
R42 Listen to Fanny Brice.

R42, Those are the original lyrics.

I REMEMBER Kaye Stevens, saw her on numerous TV shows in the late1960s and 70s. What I remember most is that my gaydar went off like crazy when I saw her perform.
