Dumbo cancelled

Disney blocks Peter Pan, Dumbo, Swiss Family Robinson, and The Aristocats due to offensive racial depictions

Walt Disney and these archaic cartoons were racist as fuck. Anyone who opposes this action has racism they should work on within themselves.
| by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 25, 2021 2:34 PM |
Peter Pan should be remade as a pro-Black story. Dumbo also has transphobic undertones
| by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 25, 2021 2:38 PM |
That crow song "When I See an Elephant Fly" is one of my favourite Disney songs ever. They should add some kind of PSA or note and let it be.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 25, 2021 2:41 PM |
It’s caricature. That’s what cartoons do. Edna Mode from the Incredibles isn’t much different from these old examples.
| by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 25, 2021 2:43 PM |
R5
Read the article. They’re only removed from children’s section and can still be watched by adults, or by children with parental consent. And they have added disclaimers as well.

So you’re for censorship? You think Gone With the Wind shouldn’t be shown either? You can acknowledge they were racist and still watch them.
| by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 25, 2021 2:45 PM |
I love the Aristocats with!? Just add a disclaimer such as the one Warner Brothers puts before older Tom and Jerry cartoons.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | January 25, 2021 2:45 PM |
Do the people making these decisions to not show these things believe that banning them somehow is going to stop racism? Dumbo is not making children racist. If you want to protect kids from racism, then ban their parents, their grandparents.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 25, 2021 2:47 PM |
R11, see R2 for the kind of people making these decisions. It's only going to get worse.

What 99% of people don't understand is that humankind hasn't reached some kind of cultural pinnacle. 15, 30, 50 years from now, our contemporary literature, films, and art will be seen as just as tasteless and offensive as these works seem to many people these days, because cultural norms are ever-changing. The current norms aren't "the best," "the most enlightened," or whatever, they're just what's trending right now.
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 25, 2021 2:55 PM |
I have watched both of those movies recently.
The crows are a racist stereotype (although I wonder if kids would pick up on it since it is a stereotype of black singers circa 1940). It is a great song, and I suspect while a stereotype, the crows in Dumbo are treated with a lot more dignity than black characters in non-cartoons of the time.
Swiss Family Robinson on the other hand... Really not you can say positive about the depiction of the pirates and it was made 20 years later than Dumbo. I will say James Danno Macarthur was not hard on the eyes. You see some of that in some of the early Hawaii 5-O episodes, but after the first season he is given less to do. I get the impression that Jack Lord wanted to be the one star of the show.
The removing it from the child's profile but having it still available and giving the parents a heads up there might be some outdated and/or objectional content seems like a good compromise.

| by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 25, 2021 2:58 PM |

| by Anonymous | reply 19 | January 25, 2021 3:10 PM |
You don't seem to know what "cancelled" means, Boomer R19.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | January 25, 2021 3:12 PM |
It's only a matter of time before they're removed. Remember how Gone With The Wind was almost removed from HBO Max due to the George Floyd protests? The "only removing them from the kid's sections" is a pacifier, it won't be long before they're taken off the service completely. Isn't revisionist history fun?

Jesus, Dumbo changed many peoples' views re animal exploitation. Just b/c there are jive-talking crows, it's cancelled? FFS.

FANTASIA (dancing hippoes modelled after fat African-American women) and LADY AND THE TRAMP (Thai people referred to as "Siamese" and depicted as malicious cats) should also be cancelled.

They had disclaimers, developed by a committee of experts, before these movies since last fall. I guess some activists thought that wasn't enough.

Bambi with its absentee father standing heroically on the bluff while mother does the child rearing and dies can go also. Sexist crap.

I find it interesting that these movies feature a lot of violence, including murder and threats of murder to children, but those don't require content disclaimers.

[quote] Thai people referred to as "Siamese" and depicted as malicious cats
R35, it's not the "Siamese" part that's offensive, but rather, as you pointed out, making them villains. "Siam" is commonly used in Thailand in relation to branding (e.g., a luxury shopping mall). It's not derogatory. It's like Japan using "Nippon" in its own products and services (e.g., ANA airline).

They've only moved them over to the section where kids have to get parental consent to watch these movies. They haven't been censored or deleted or cancelled or anything along those lines.
May I remind you that literally dozens of you on the recent Gone With the Wind thread (a) lied and said the movie had been deleted from HBO Max, and some said it had been completely censored forever, and (b) said the "censoring" of GWTW guaranteed Trump would win.
Perhaps some of you should cool your shit down for a second instead of blowing your top and screaming about a travesty that has not actually happened.
| by Anonymous | reply 49 | January 25, 2021 4:30 PM |
A lot of liars on Datalounge these days.
It's sad when you see people talk about how great and wonderful and witty Datalounge is, when this thread right here is 100% Datalounge.
GWTW wasn't "almost removed" from HBO Max. That's a lie. It wasn't censored or deleted or banned. Those are lies.
These Disney movies haven't been cancelled or banned. Those are lies, too.
A lot of you are regular DLers who don't usually troll, but you let yourselves get caught up in these lies because you want to be lied to. You're no better than the Trumpsters and QAnoners you complain about on other threads, where you ask, "Why do they believe such crazy things?" Hey, you're doing it too, believing something crazy because you're addicted to outrage and being a victim.
And you'll double down or triple down and demand everyone FF me and tell me to go kill myself, which you'll say is completely justified response because it's "pointless bitchery," when in fact it's just you getting your feelings hurt.

Loved swiss family robinson and the aristocrats. Can't remember anything "racist" in that one.
The other movies I don't care for.
| by Anonymous | reply 52 | January 25, 2021 4:46 PM |
Why would kids even need parental consent for cartoons? Seriously. I grew up watching Bugs and Daffynand those were far more "adult" than Disney crap.

OP had every VHS tape hoarder hot and bothered for a moment there - flipping the lid on the ottoman, running hands over all those over-sized cassette containers with double plastic coating. “I’m rich off those little fucks! I’ll buy Dwayne a tattoo!”

| by Anonymous | reply 57 | January 25, 2021 5:09 PM |
They should just do what was done for Gone With The Wind. Film an introduction warning people about the racism and show the original film.
That actually helps the dialogue about race.

We need these things to understand our culture of racism- we can't erase them completely. I think the warning is good. But I've written papers on the messaging in old Disney movies- they're terribly important cultural historical documents and shaped our parents and grandparents' world-views.
I do think every adult under 40 needs to learn the phrase:
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, But words can never hurt me."
and stop desperately wanting to be victims all the time of other people. We're going to need actual survival instincts. Stop borrowing trouble.

We don’t “need” bigoted entertainment” to understand bigotry. People understand bigotry. It doesn’t make them less bigoted. We have a world of information at our fingertips. It hasn’t made people smarter nor more empathetic. This thread will continue on with fools claiming everything is happening but what Disney is actually doing.

I’m a member of the Disney (blu ray) Movie Club. I was waiting to buy my required titles until they released The Watcher In the Woods on blu ray, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I guess I’ll get Swiss Family Robinson and ... I don’t know what else. Whatever’s the most offensive Disney title on Blu ray.

Tiger Lily, r69?
The Whoopie Goldberg Tom and Jerry intro is extremely well done. It is the opposite of cancel culture. She explains the stereotypes, its historical context, and its importance in the cartoons. She argues against editing out stereotypical content or getting rid of the cartoons. It’s educational, and people can ignore it if they choose.

Why are the crows from Dumbo racist, but the hyenas from Lion King aren’t?
I just watched The Aristocats on New Year’s but I can’t think of anything that could possibly be construed as racist. Unless it’s the British geese.
| by Anonymous | reply 71 | January 26, 2021 2:46 AM |
R68 Swiss Family Robinson is offensive because a Swiss family are in a shipwreck and set up a house and a farm on some Polynesian island.
It's offensive because some Polynesians may have been displaced. Therefore the SJWs say the Swiss Family should have drowned in the ocean.
| by Anonymous | reply 72 | January 26, 2021 2:57 AM |
The Siamese cat is a pretty brazen stereotype and uses chopsticks to play the piano. The hyenas in Lion Kong have been criticized, but they are balanced by other black and African characterizations. Maybe it will seem more offensive in 50 years, or maybe the frame of reference will be lost.
These movies are not being edited or censored. If you watch them with contemporary eyes, rather than a childhood memory, the dated content - both offensive and just old fashioned - is extremely obvious.

HEY KNEE-JERK DUMMIES!!
THE OP IS LYING and the headline of the article linked is semi-misleading.
The movies are merely moved from the all access Children's section of the app to the section where parents have to approve the choice to watch. There's also a disclaimer before the films. The article OP linked to explains it. NOTHING IS CANCELLED.
Others in the thread have pointed this out but a bunch of dummy reactionary commenters with no common sense or curiosity-for-info keep missing them nor did they click on the article. The idiocy is strong around here tonight.

I don’t see a problem with putting these films in the adult category or issuing a warning. I think changing Splash Mountain was pretty stupid. It was the cutest ride and people can find problems anywhere.
It is pretty insane to me that it’s fine to demean gays on tv and in movies all the time, but we have to worry about animated birds that were drawn 80 years ago.
