The artist died of a heart attack at his New York office Thursday.
The filmmaker -- who also co-wrote the screenplay for Woody Allen's Bullets Over Broadway and penned the book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical -- was in the middle of the run of his one-man, autobiographical play Everything's Fine at the time of his death.
"We've lost Doug McGrath," John Lithgow, the New York stage show's director, tweeted Friday. "Words can't express our grief and shock."
The producers of the show said in a statement: "The company of Everything's Fine was honored to have presented his solo autobiographical show. Everyone who worked with him over the last three months of production was struck by his grace, charm, and droll sense of humor, and sends deepest condolences to his family."
McGrath was also a frequent actor in Allen's films, appearing in Celebrity, Small Time Crooks, Hollywood Ending, Cafe Society and Rifkin's Festival

Can people who went to the show get their money back?

Douglas McGrath:
I had this very strange event happen to me when I was fourteen, which means eighth grade, in Midland. We got a new teacher.
Is that an ominous phrase? We got a new teacher. She took an interest in me, by which I mean too much of an interest.
I’m not going to tell you how it manifests itself, because it’s a series of shocking things.
But I will say this: It’s not the cliché that you might expect.
It’s not Summer of ’42.
It’s not The Last Picture Show, though I wish it could be The Last Picture Show, because that’s a masterpiece.
It’s a very surprising story about an older person needing things from a younger person. I know that’s kind of vague, but the show really has a series of twists that I don’t want to give away.
I’ve wanted to tell the story for a long time. In fact, in my twenties I tried to write it as a piece of fiction, as a short story. I toyed with that. It didn’t quite work that way.
But it never left me.
When the pandemic came and I suddenly found myself with twenty-four hours a day of free time, I thought, I’m going to figure out how to tell that story.
I wanted to weave it in with stories about my family because they have echoes, the two stories.

Jon Lithgow chose to use Twitter to announce McGrath's death. I no longer have a Twitter account but recognize Twitter as an important platform that provides a direct contact to an audience.

Very sad.
He performed his show on Wednesday night and was dead less than a day later.

A true loss, he was wonderful.

I saw "The Age of innocence" at Hartford Stage. I loved the show - the sets were beautiful, the script involving and moving. How nice to see Boyd Gaines perform after hearing rumors/gossip here on DL that it was "sad last days!" for him.
McGrath's death sounds completely unexpected - family and co-workers on "Everything's Fine" must be devastated.

Big, if true.

Due to the unexpected and tragic death of Douglas McGrath, the writer and star of Everything's Fine, the show closed abruptly on November 2, 2022.
Everything’s Fine is an alternately funny, touching and shocking memoir for the stage.
The play recounts Douglas McGrath’s life as a 14-year-old in Midland, Texas – the town most famous for the disappearance below ground, and the recovery above ground of “Baby Jessica.” McGrath shares remembrances of the courtship of his one-eyed father and his mother, who worked at Harper’s Bazaar for Diana Vreeland and became pals with Andy Warhol, and most intriguingly, an eighth-grade teacher who would change his life in the most unexpected way.

Perhaps Lithgow can take over the role?

Lithgow portraying a Texan sounds like torture.

He stood by Woody Allen from day one of the Soon-Yi scandal

Too bad he is not a Sun Person so we could celebrate him with a sequel at Disney.

I saw Lithgow's "Stories by Heart" in NYC. A marvelous afternoon in the theatre. He was so engaging.

Seriously, if I don't find out what that teacher did the curiosity is going to kill me. Does anyone here know what happened?

I have no idea who he is but I stopped on his photo because it was a comfort and a relief to see an affable-looking aged person who hasn't been freakified by cosmetic procedures. He's just a nice and normal looking older gentleman somewhere between middle age and old age and his face looks open and friendly in that photo, not frozen and creepy.
