With an opening credit sequence like that, no wonder it never aired!

^^^^It's worse than the Three's Company opening. Looks awfully west coast for a Cape Cod series.

by Anonymousreply 2October 11, 2021 7:46 PM

How are we supposed to remember something that never Aired?

TV version of "Shampoo". Brenner is no Beatty

by Anonymousreply 4October 11, 2021 7:47 PM

NBC probably figured it had such a winner on its hand with "Fay" that they felt safe bypassing on "Snip" altogether.

Hope Sommers who played Clara, Aunt Bea’s Lesbian lover, played ‘Aunt Cleo’ here.

The gay character spooked the network

And Brenner's face spooked the rest of the nation.

That SNIP song was awful. Not memorable at all.

Most sitcoms need a catchy or, at least, a pleasant song.

by Anonymousreply 9October 11, 2021 10:43 PM

They needed David Steinberg, not Brenner.

The part where it goes "snip" in the background is cool. The rest is AWFUL.

I liked David Brenner. Always thought he was gay, but he wasn't. He was a popular and talented standup comedian on the Tonight Show and other talk shows...regularly did game shows and seemed to be everywhere in the late 1970s.

Network television was skittish about gay characters on their shows...especially comedies. Heard of this show, but never saw an episode. They started promoting it for the fall schedule, and then as a January replacement, but it never happened.

I saw David Brenner do his stand-up at the Golden Nugget in Vegas in the 80s. To my surprise, he was good -- funny without being the least bit offensive.

Otherwise I found him to be a bore in his TV appearances.

He claimed to be many years younger than his actual age.

Now what Coke addict serial rapist came up with this shit and why aren’t they canceled?

"Snip" makes me think of a vasectomy or a dog getting neutered, not cutting hair.

I could swear I caught a glimpse of Illeana Douglas at 18 seconds, but she would have still been a child, right?

R4: "Brenner is no Beatty"

That's putting it... mildly.

by Anonymousreply 19October 12, 2021 3:15 AM

Maybe Illeana was doing Carrie Fisher's "Shampoo" role.

by Anonymousreply 20October 12, 2021 3:34 AM

I would have watched it just for Hope Summers.

"He's a very versatile guy, he can set you straight for blow you dryyy..."

How many innuendos can they put into one phrase?

by Anonymousreply 22October 12, 2021 4:38 AM

I thought Brenner was a funny comedian, but one of the homeliest guys I ever saw. He was on the Howard Stern show and said he lost his virginity at age 13. Who the hell would have fucked him? As I recall he got into a very nasty custody battle with his ex-wife over their son. I don't know how that came out. He was also at one time engaged to the figure skater Tai Babilonia. Ugh, I wonder what she saw in him; he was 23 years older than her and gross to look at. Oh well, I guess she hooked up with him because he "made her laugh", or something.

If you READ Brenner’a jokes (in your head or out loud), they were pretty funny. But when you heard him perform those same jokes, they were pitiful. A man trying much too hard. And it was obvious.

And yes, he was much older than he tried to claim. But apparently a real chick magnet.

Listen to the person who sings the theme song. I don't know her name, but she clearly also did a lot of the Schoolhouse Rock songs. Listen again, if you don't believe me.

I have no idea why he would be a chick magnet, seeing as how unattractive he was. My guess is that a lot of his "girlfriends" were after his money. Money can certainly make a lot of people overlook someone's appearance.

The official DL sitcom of the 70s.

You can't look at him and tell? He was Jewish.

Brenner held the record on the Tonight Show with 158 appearances as a guest and he guest-hosted for Johnny Carson 75 times (5th place for guest hosts)
