Do you like Korean food?

Writer Robert Guerrero

It looks pretty tasty to me.

some of it, yes. Barbecue, fried chicken, kimchee pancakes... yum.

by Anonymousreply 2July 27, 2022 11:06 PM

Yes, absolutely, though I don't eat meat.

by Anonymousreply 3July 27, 2022 11:08 PM

Yes, I love it. Korean food and Mexican food as well.

by Anonymousreply 5July 27, 2022 11:11 PM

That thing looks more typically American than anything else. Chicken in a spicy sauce smothered in melted, toasted cheese with scallions on top? I'm sure there's some Korean twist, but it sounds like something Max & Irma's dreamed up.

by Anonymousreply 6July 27, 2022 11:14 PM

I just had green onion pancakes and Kimchi for lunch. YUMMERS.

by Anonymousreply 8July 27, 2022 11:27 PM

How authentic is the dish OP linked to? It looks like Chicken Parm. Is cheese even part of any Asian cuisine?

by Anonymousreply 9July 27, 2022 11:30 PM

That looks good!

Bibumguksu is great to beat the summer heat!

The recipe is called "BULLDYKE?" 😂😂😆

by Anonymousreply 11July 27, 2022 11:34 PM

Look up Maangchi on YouTube. She has hundreds of Korean cookery videos, and deserves to be a DL icon.

by Anonymousreply 12July 27, 2022 11:41 PM

R9, it looks like it could be a post-war-influenced dish.

by Anonymousreply 13July 27, 2022 11:42 PM

I'm now addicted to her! Yes I love Korean.

by Anonymousreply 14July 27, 2022 11:52 PM

My husband is Korean and we do a fair amount of Korean home cooking. He makes the best japchae and spam-n-kimchi. I've gotten pretty good at making spicy chicken wings and kalbi.

However, even as an adventurous eater, some Korean food is just not for me. Raw blue crab marinated in hot pepper made me gag, as did raw skate wing (which is not fileted; it's served attached to the cartilage). I can't handle fermented oyster kimchi, either.

by Anonymousreply 15July 28, 2022 12:11 AM

I find it fascinating how diverse the Asian foods really are. Most all Korean food you don't find versions of in Vietnam, China or Japan, and vice versa.

by Anonymousreply 18July 28, 2022 12:32 AM

[quote] How authentic is the dish OP linked to? It looks like Chicken Parm. Is cheese even part of any Asian cuisine?

Cheese has become a popular ingredient in Korean food, it seems. Not sure whether the recipe at OP is "authentic."

by Anonymousreply 20July 28, 2022 2:06 AM

It's not "authentic" in the sense of classical Korean cooking. It's a modern dish, hence the cheese. Cheese had no place in traditional Korean cuisine whatsoever.

by Anonymousreply 23July 28, 2022 3:19 AM

NYTcooking has a fabulous recipe for Korean fire chicken with cheese. I have made it many times. It isn’t authentic but it is delicious. The cheese cuts the heat.

by Anonymousreply 24July 28, 2022 3:22 AM

Bibimbap is probably a low-challenge way to eat Korean food. Make sure you get the kind that actually has a rice crust, though. That crunchy, browned rice is the best part of the dish.

by Anonymousreply 25July 28, 2022 3:24 AM

They seem to like spicy food.

by Anonymousreply 26July 28, 2022 5:43 AM

Cheese? OP that is at best Korean American.

by Anonymousreply 27July 28, 2022 7:09 AM

Koreans don't eat cheese?

by Anonymousreply 28July 28, 2022 8:29 AM

My favorite dish is corn cheese. But it’s so expensive.

by Anonymousreply 31July 28, 2022 5:07 PM

Yes, they do now, R28. Not before the last ten or twenty years was it so popular. They've had pizza and cheeseburgers, etc , for a long time, but creating east-west hybrid dishes using cheese is more recent, with some exceptions.

by Anonymousreply 32July 28, 2022 6:13 PM

OMG I made the spicy fried Korean chicken last night following the recipe at the beginning of the thread. It was astounding!

by Anonymousreply 33July 28, 2022 6:49 PM

Yes, r24 it's Maangchi's recipe from OP's link.

What Korean fried chicken recipe?

by Anonymousreply 37July 29, 2022 8:35 AM

The chicken and cheese dish does look really tasty. My Korean mother-in-law must have missed out on this trend (she's been in the US for more than 50 years). She's never made us anything like that.

by Anonymousreply 38July 29, 2022 9:03 AM

I like most of what I've had. Seafood pancakes, bulgogi, all the varieties of kim chee (although the common nappa cabbage variety is my favorite), various noodle dishes, and kimbap (Korean sushi roll). I go to the Korean market occasionally to buy a jar of kim chee, particularly when I know that I have to do a course of antibiotics. It helps restore the intestinal flora that gets wiped out by the antibiotics. It's high in sodium, which isn't good for my blood pressure, but I don't eat it for weeks on end. When it gets too sour to eat plain, I just mix it in with some meat and some fresh vegetables to make kim chee soup.

by Anonymousreply 39July 29, 2022 9:12 AM

I like her japchae recipe.

by Anonymousreply 40August 3, 2022 2:35 AM

I am strongly in favor of it!

by Anonymousreply 41August 3, 2022 3:26 AM

I make my own kimchi, and the recipe I have works every time. It’s delicious, and much better than buying packaged kimchi. There is a bit of preparation, but the end result is very satisfying.

I tried Korean fried chicken and was incredibly disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 43August 4, 2022 7:40 AM

You mistakenly heard KFC and thought you were supposed to go to the Colonel's place.

by Anonymousreply 44August 4, 2022 2:12 PM

Side request: could someone recommend a good gojuchang? I’m a novice when it comes to cooking Korean, so I’d appreciate any help.

by Anonymousreply 45August 4, 2022 10:28 PM

No. Never. I got caught up by Moonies in San Francisco a long, long time ago and didn’t get away for nine months. I didn’t like fasting then and I don’t eat Korean food now, ever.

by Anonymousreply 46August 4, 2022 10:53 PM

R45, CJ Haechandle gochujang is what my Korean MIL buys. This is a paste that you can use to make gochujang sauce. For a ready-to-use condiment, I like HAIO Vinegared Hot Pepper Paste. Chung Jung One may be easier to find and their products are decent.

by Anonymousreply 47August 5, 2022 1:44 AM

Thank you, r47. I’ll start looking for some this weekend. My very best to you and your MIL!

by Anonymousreply 48August 5, 2022 2:06 AM

Absolutely LOVE it. Got into it about a decade ago, and have been obsessed since. So many great dishes, the banchan, etc. And relatively healthy too.

by Anonymousreply 50September 6, 2022 8:16 AM

I live for it. It's my favorite cuisine.

by Anonymousreply 51September 6, 2022 8:20 AM

R12 - she's awesome and has the best personality. I love watching her videos. I read that her first cookbook has the best collection of Korean recipes.

by Anonymousreply 52September 6, 2022 8:24 AM

Yes my white ass loves Korean food. Kimchi, once you get over the hump of it being unfamiliar (if it is unfamiliar), is so versatile I've seen a few westeners converted in a very short time to eating it with almost every meal. it goes with everything. And Maangchi is legit. Am linking one of my favourite recipes, it's absolutely delicious - and you 100% need a non-stick skillet.

Another Maangchi favourite. To those who might be afraid of extreme heat, Korean red pepper flakes (gochugaru) and Korean red pepper paste (gochujang) are not really that fiery at all, especially in the most common brands.

Stay away from those instant ramen fire noodles though. Those will fuck you up and not in a fun way.

[quote] Is cheese even part of any Asian cuisine?

No. But like with everything there are quirky exceptions like a Yunnan dish with some kind of cheese that i had in China.

by Anonymousreply 55September 6, 2022 9:08 AM

No. Hate it. The only cuisine I hate. I even like Ethiopian and Filipino food and those are non-starters for a lot of folks.

Kimchi-hate it. They put it clay pots and bury it in the ground. It should stay there and that was probably the original intention.

After the Korean War, American troops provided them with hotdogs and American cheese and they put that shit on everything. Including the hotdogs.

I dated a Korean guy and now I hate him too.

by Anonymousreply 56September 6, 2022 9:22 AM

R56 I think you hate Korean food. Although I have to say hot dogs with kimchi sounds good!

by Anonymousreply 57September 6, 2022 9:38 AM

Probably not authentic. I'm looking for a traditional North Korean grass and leaves salad.

by Anonymousreply 61September 6, 2022 4:45 PM

It's delicious. I was taken to a Korean restaurant in the mid-1970s. Korean restaurants were rare back then. I remember thinking kimchi was odd. Now I love it.

by Anonymousreply 62September 6, 2022 4:49 PM

If you have high triglycerides, eat kimchi.

I love it. An HMart opened near me during the pandemic and I started cooking a lot of Korean dishes with the help of YouTube. It's probably my favorite Asian cuisine.

Dak-bokkeum-tang is good.

by Anonymousreply 65September 6, 2022 5:06 PM

Liking Ethiopian food but not Korean food is kind of baby-taste adjacent.

by Anonymousreply 66September 6, 2022 5:16 PM

Gochugaru or the Korean red pepper flakes are basically the crushed red chili pepper flakes that you put on pizza. Except smaller flakes and no seeds. No seeds is a plus for me.

by Anonymousreply 68September 6, 2022 5:39 PM

People who say yummers should be pounded on the head with a pipe wrench until they stop breathing

by Anonymousreply 69September 6, 2022 5:51 PM

Yummy 😋

And the fried rice looks delicious too

R71 Chris Cho's (apparent) affectation annoys me to no end. Just seeing his face fills me with irrational rage.

I like their picked cucumbers and seaweed salad. I may be wrong, but Japanese food also has similar side dishes.

by Anonymousreply 74September 7, 2022 4:12 AM

Glad so many dislike Korean food. I do not wish it to become too popular and decline in quality like Chinese Thai and Indian.

by Anonymousreply 76September 7, 2022 6:14 AM

No. Years ago I stayed in a holiday apartment above a Korean restaurant and the variety of smells struck me as off or worse for the week, at times a burning hair smell which stuck with me. Unfair or not, it put me off Korean food which had not been favorite before the experience.

by Anonymousreply 77September 7, 2022 6:15 AM

[quote] Yes, they do now, [R28]. Not before the last ten or twenty years was it so popular. They've had pizza and cheeseburgers, etc , for a long time, but creating east-west hybrid dishes using cheese is more recent, with some exceptions.

So... if they actually do it in Korea, how is it Korean-American?

by Anonymousreply 78September 7, 2022 6:18 AM

I started growing garlic chives just to keep up with her channel!

by Anonymousreply 79September 7, 2022 6:30 AM

I love garlic chives! You can use it instead of onions and they have a fresher, greener aroma.

by Anonymousreply 80September 7, 2022 6:31 AM

R73 - even worse, although I also hate him for other reasons.

by Anonymousreply 81September 7, 2022 9:48 AM

I'll await Margaret Cho's cookbook.

by Anonymousreply 82September 7, 2022 7:35 PM

Uncle Roger sucks CCP dick.

by Anonymousreply 83September 7, 2022 9:43 PM

Yep, r84 got a Pee-Wee Herman / Paul Reubens or elvira/cassandra Peterson thing going on

by Anonymousreply 85September 10, 2022 4:39 AM

I just tried Korean BBQ chicken breasts and was disappointed.

by Anonymousreply 86September 20, 2022 8:29 AM

I’d love some recommendations for barbecued chicken recipes. Spill!!

by Anonymousreply 88October 4, 2022 12:53 PM

I have never seen or tasted anything Korean that has mozzarella cheese. I do like Korean food but that thing she made is not Korean IMO.
