Can someone give me the details on why he is such a figure of derision? I tried reading some old threads, but they seemed to be in code.

There's a number of reasons:

1) He's widely rumored to be extremely closeted. He has a male BFF whom he lived with for years whom he obviously loves, but he goes berserk and has attacked men physically if he's said to be gay.

2) He somehow gets cast in leading man roles even though he's a mid-sized, extremely plain character actor (albeit one with a very good body).

3) He loves to show off his talents like singing whenever he possibly gets the chance on talk shows--he is absolutely desperate for praise and attention even though he's a dick--he's very much like Kevin Spacey in this way

Thanks R3 - I finally got around to seeing The Avengers and thought he was curiously hot in it - not conventionally attractive, rugged but boyish, amazingly tight little body, and something about a bow and arrow has always been a turn-on for me (big Robin of Sherwood fan back in the Showtime day).

But then it seemed whenever he was mentioned there was a chorus of jeers.

Too bad he sounds like a twat.

Oh well.

Wonder how he got on with the rest of them on set. Those films seem to have been largely free of cast rivalries, etc. Maybe because they're all brain-damaged to begin with.
