Anacin is still on the shelves. There's also Bayer back and body now that has added caffeine.

by Anonymousreply 2July 28, 2021 9:32 PM

Are these approved cow names?

by Anonymousreply 4July 28, 2021 9:35 PM

Anacin is on shelves? Where?

by Anonymousreply 5July 28, 2021 9:37 PM

R5 - At my local CVS in northern California. I'd been searching for Bayer B&B fearing it had been discontinued and found Anacin instead. The Bayer isn't discontinued. It was just a supply chain issue

by Anonymousreply 9July 28, 2021 9:42 PM

Bufferin, Anacin and Nuprin are all available on Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 11July 28, 2021 9:45 PM

Here's one that shows my age. Mercurochrome. It was my mother's go to antiseptic for small cuts and scrapes in the 70s.

[Quote]Readily available in most countries, it is no longer sold in Switzerland, Brazil, France, Iran, Germany, and the United States due to its mercury content.[1][2][3]

What was the name of the product for arthritis that was applied with a container that looked like a roll on deodorant?

by Anonymousreply 29July 28, 2021 10:03 PM

R12 Wow, Mercurochrome! My mother still has a 50+ year old bottle of that stuff in her medicines drawer. Will never forget how it stained ones skin a bizarre pink/orange colour, which lasted for days.

by Anonymousreply 30July 28, 2021 10:03 PM

I remember the sting from mercurochrome, but you knew it must be working. Or was that iodine? Or were they both the same thing?

by Anonymousreply 31July 28, 2021 10:12 PM

R31 They're both antiseptics and they both stain, and are toxic, but are entirely different preparations. Neither seem to be used much anymore, at least in the West.

by Anonymousreply 37July 28, 2021 11:34 PM

I am guessing this mother eventually went from Anacin to Mother's Little Helper.

I the Anacin one I remember was when a lady was complaining about her "muscle tension headaches" am guessing it was late70's, but did not find it on youtube.

Wasn't Contact a cold capsule. I seem to remember the capsule was filled with small tiny little dots.

These things are hard to get. None of the drugstores near me sell them anymore. I did manage to get a few bottles on a “LAST CHANCE” discount downtown so I bought what was left on the shelf.

There were a number of toothpastes I used to see commercials for all the time as a kid, Aim, Aquafresh, Close-up, but do not recall seeing in stores in years (definitely have not seen the commercials). I did a search and it looks like you can still get them at Walmart and Target, so maybe I have just noticed them or it is more limited where you can get them.

Funny I still remember this commercial as a kid, but at the time did not know who Susan Lucci/Erica Kane was. She is not yet well enough outside soap where she can play some random person in the commercial and it is not a celebrity endorsement.

Sometimes those toothpaste brands show up in dollar stores or the like. Usually another company has bought the name from the original manufacturer.

by Anonymousreply 76July 29, 2021 12:34 PM

I remember trying to find some Tylenol when I was in the UK and I kept looking for acetaminophen, but couldn't find any. It took me a while to realize that they call it paracetamol (the generic name, not the brand name.)

by Anonymousreply 77July 29, 2021 12:37 PM

I bought some Close Up on Amazon because I remembered it’s cinnamon-y goodness from the 70’s/80’s. I couldn’t find a country of manufacture on it.

by Anonymousreply 78July 29, 2021 1:33 PM

Aim, Aquafresh, Close-Up, Gleem, and UltraBrite are available in dollar stores, some grocery stores, and online.

by Anonymousreply 79July 29, 2021 2:33 PM

by Anonymousreply 106July 29, 2021 11:24 PM

R103 mentioned Apollo. For a while in the 70s "space food" was a novelty and all the rage. I remember seeing little dehydrated food packs in the store (dehydrated ice cream!). By far Tang, which is still around, was the most popular. Then Space Food Sticks sold as completely nutritionally balanced. I whined enough that my mother got them once. They were the original energy bars.

[quote] I’ve always been able to find Sudafed in the shelf.

It’s not pseudoephedrine, which is the original formula for Sudafed. The Sudafed you buy from the shelf is the crap imposter phenylephrine, which is virtually a placebo. In order to get real Sudafed made with pseudoephedrine you have to sign for it, which is a typical American idiocy.

Lavoris, a bright red mouthwash that tasted of cloves.

Crabtree & Evelyn Birch Shampoo.

Nine Flags cologne/aftershave. Manzanilla, the one from Spain.

Canned tuna that actually tasted like fish, the stuff in the cans and pouches today is all but flavorless. I think the reason is industry squeezes the omega-rich oil out of the fish before canning, so they can encapsulate that oil and sell it to us at a high price. Imported Italian tuna still tastes pretty much as it should.

Those Hydrox shiny, flat, almost pastry-like cookies with the raisin filling. The things called Garibaldi Bars from The Vermont Country Store just don't cut it. I once bought a tin of raisin bars from an Asian market. Big mistake-dry, crumbly, tasteless.

The FDA pulled Zantac, an antacid, and its generic versions off the market a year or two ago because the active ingredient, ranitidine. can become carcegenic if stored improperly. I noticed a commercial earlier this week for a "new reformulated" version but it turns out the active ingredient is now famotidine, which is the active ingredient in Pepcid. I guess ranitidine is gone for good.
