Did Hot Men Really Smoke?
William Jenkins
The guy in this 1993 cigarette ad is very good-looking. But did hot men smoke back in the 1990s?
I only remember trashy men smoking.
I guess the ad is to make the trashy men think they will look as hot as the man in the ad.

Yes they did. Kevin Costner was/is a smoker.

No, smoking was over in the 1990s.
Everybody knew about the horrors of lung cancer by then.

R5 are you in California? Not in my neck of the woods....

Even way back then Kents were an old-timey brand that nobody really smoked anymore except for some older people.

NYC was full of smokers in the 90s.

But did HOT MEN smoke in the 1990s?
Or was it just average and ugly trash?

This is actually a valid question R9 has here. When did the age of universal smoking really end? Whenever the doctors stopped endorsing brands?

In NYC smoking was still somewhat prevalent among "hot" people. Lots of creative types, and the fashion industry was still a smokestack.

In the Midwest, Ashtrays weren't allowed at my desk by 1989. Restaurants were smoke free by 1994. You could easily share an entire pack with casual smokers outside bars by 1996.
Smokers went from 35% to 25% of the population in a short period of time.

I don't think Kents are even made anymore.

How much does a pack of cigarettes cost these days? I quit about 12 years ago. I wonder how much tax money the government has lost because of people quitting.
| by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 13, 2021 1:31 AM |
Yes, OP, not men really smoked in the 90's. Many still do, only they are now "closet smokers".
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 13, 2021 1:33 AM |
I remember Kents from my smoking days. They were like puffing on warm air, no taste at all. One of the worst brands.
| by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 13, 2021 1:59 AM |
Unlike today, advertising didn’t feature homely people back in the day OP.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 13, 2021 2:05 AM |
True, ads usually featured attractive people back then.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 13, 2021 2:11 AM |
I could really go for a fucking cigarette. But I can’t. I’d be up to two packs a day by Friday.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 13, 2021 2:12 AM |
How do you think they got hot?
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 13, 2021 2:12 AM |
Yes, more people, even hot ones, smoked in 1993.
Also a lot of young people smoke, so they might look hot for a couple years.

The Hot Men smoked Parliament Cigarettes.

[quote]When did the age of universal smoking really end?
A lot of people quit in the 1980s. I stopped smoking in the summer of 1987. The previous winter, I'd seen people standing outside in the cold to smoke a cigarette, and I told myself I would never do that. So I quit. I'd tried before, but this time I was successful. Within about ten days, I never wanted a cigarette again. And I haven't had one. Don't miss it at all.

I quit 10 years ago. It's funny to remember how many guys liked that I smoked, even my current partner. He wanted me to quit, but also thought it was hot in some way. Probably because I'm a top.
I still miss it sometimes.

Kent cigarette filters contained asbestos, so they were double killers.

I can’t speak to the “hot men” part of OP’s post, but my parents claim almost everyone smoked in the 50s and 60s. (I was born in ‘65). People didn’t know how bad smoking was for your health at the time.

Kents were never the cigarettes for "cool"people.
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 13, 2021 9:00 PM |
The hot guy in the ad is smoking Kents!
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 13, 2021 9:12 PM |
It's just an ad. Kents were never all that popular, only older conservative people smoked them.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 13, 2021 9:17 PM |
The hot ones still sneak one occasionally and that’s okay 🤤

Apparently, Whitney smoked Newports in 1995.
Were those trashy cigarettes?
Offsite Link| by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 13, 2021 9:29 PM |
Newports are very trashy. They are as stereotypically ghetto as malt liquor and fried chicken.

The few "upscale" people who still smoke usually smoke Marlboro Lights, Parliaments or American Spirits.
