Dick Van Dyke
John Thompson
Were he and MTM close?
What about Julie Andrews?

Just this year (at 92 years old). I can remember him telling an interview that he never received acting, singing, or dancing lessons. He just went out there and did his best. His best is better than many peoples' best. He's irreplaceable. And he maintained genuine friendships wit my Julie and MTM.

I don't know if Brits care about Dick Van Dyke, but he's one of the most beloved American performers we've ever had. He's done other things, of course, but he's never shown any fear in tackling any subject, or genre.

I just watched him in an HBO documentary Carl Reiner made about living a good life after 90. Dick Van Dyke is in the film and he looks, moves and talks like someone ten years younger. In his first scene in the film he is in his own kitchen and there is a young-ish woman cutting vegetables or something. I thought, how nice that his daughter is there. It turns out he's married to the frauest of fraus who is 46 years younger than him.

When he did the TV movie about alcoholism in the 1970s, it was a shock — and he was very good in that as well.

I enjoyed his film, The Comedian, about what happened to Stan Laurel.

Having Dick and Dyke in your name, you had to be someone special.

R1 That is admirable. I'm glad he succeeded and I'm glad he is enjoying the fullness of his years and that he has a great career to look back on.
