Dharma And Greg
Andrew Hansen
I had never heard of this show but I started watching on Hulu. It is hilarious and the leading lady Jenna Elfman is charming and cute. Any fans here who watched it in the original run? Any gossip?

It was lame then and even more dated now. Also, Jenna Elfman is a nutso scientologist so she isn't just acting kooky.

Is Jenna Elfman related to Danny Elfman?

Thomas Gibson was very handsome but the writing on this show was the laziest, most unoriginal garbage.

R2, she's married to Danny Elfman's nephew, Bodhi.

I find it hard to believe Thomas/Greg is not gay in real life.
| by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 31, 2021 6:22 PM |
She's a rabid $cienotologist.

The best part was Susan Sullivan

I used to think Thomas Gibson was cute, but he turned out to be an asshole, if the gossip from "Criminal Minds" is true.

his ATWT character, Derek, came off FLAMING.
An interesting twist to have him and his father conspiring to kill Lily for her millions.

Jenna is a shitty actress who sold her soul voluntarily to the $cientology Cult

R10, She’s a good comedic actress though.

Fuck the haters....it was a funny show.

The only thing that's really funny on the show is Susan Sullivan as Kitty. She just made that show. Few comic actors have ever been more hilarious at acting constantly appalled (Jane Curtin is one of the few others I can think of).
What I really like about the show was they made it clear after a while that the character Dharma did really grow on Kitty, even though Dharma also consistently really appalled her. It seemed very organic and real--not forced nor sentimentalized.

It was interesting that Thomas Gibson played almost the exact same character as he played on Tales of the City--a handsome, wealthy scion of Old San Francisco society working for a family corporation--only in this case his character was kind and tolerant, rather than sociopathic and cruel.

This thread makes me wanna check out the show. Never really had it on my radar, so never watched it when it was on. I read sitcom writer Ken Levine's blog. He has nothing but praise for Jenna Elfman, saying practically that she is a gem and a kind human being, and was a joy to work with. He said something similar about Thomas Gibson. He says he believes and does not reject the allegations from the Criminal Mind's set, but also states that his experience with him when they worked on shows were different. He wasn't praising him like Elfman, merely stated that work with him was easy and without any problems.

if you like Jenna Elfman, check out the romantic comedy she did with Ben Stiller and Edward Norton. Norton actually chose a studio romantic comedy as his first directing project and it works. called KEEPING THE FAITH. (Amadeus director Milos Foreman plays Norton's priest mentor)
Theres another thread on here about movies that are too long. Keeping the Faith is like 2hrs 10 mins....

Only episode I ever saw, and only for the Stevie Nicks reference.

I use this show as a marker of when TV jumped the shark. I don't want to watch bickering breeders all night long.

Duly noted: R19 from a DL thread does not watch Dharma & Greg.

except for Sullivan, this is as funny as the show ever got in my book.

Agree with R21. When Family Guy duplicated the opening of Little House on the Prairie, they ended it with “and Jenna Elfman as the Old Prospector.” Another nice jab.

I liked it, but only because the parents are far funnier than the two leads.

The first two seasons were funny and cute, then it took a dive.

Thomas Gibson originated Male Resting Bitch Face for all his appearances on screen.

The best sitcom form the 90s was The Nanny. It is completely timeless. It deserves all the media adoration Friends got.

I noticed Jenna and Bodhi unfollowed Danny Masterson after the rape charges. I wonder if they know something.

The Holland Taylor character on Two and a Half Men owed a lot to her portrayal.
Susan was also fabulous on Castle.

Shrugs...I'm a fussy bitch and I always liked this show. And, it's by far the best Chuck Lorre show. Not a fan of Scientology but Jenna Elfman was adorable here and the entire cast was great, though as it has already been said, the 4 parents were the best part especially Susan Sullivan but Mimi Kennedy was also a hoot.
It's telling when people snark on something by quoting from a piece of shit show like "Family Guy". That tells me a lot about your taste level, or lack of it.

R29 Holland Taylor's entire career is based on playing variations of the "hoity toity" dame.
She didn't need to copy anyone.

In my mind, it's one of those not-so-great but popular 90s sitcoms such as "Ellen" or "Caroline in the City" which, if you could edit down episode to funny lines delivered by secondary characters, it would be very watchable and worth revisiting.
| by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 31, 2021 10:59 PM |
Susan Sullivan was the best thing about that show.
| by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 31, 2021 11:13 PM |
I only know Susan Sullivan from Falcon Crest. I had no idea she could do funny. Maybe there needs to be a Susan Sullivan appreciation thread.

Seriously if you asked me circa 2000 who I thought was the most irritating celebrity Elfman would have been right at the top of my list. That wasn’t even knowing that she was a crazy Scieno and all that.
I always loved Sandra Bernhard’s line on Will & Grace something like “you think I would be friends with you two Dharma & Greg lookalikes?!?”

It was a good show, OP. Found her really funny at the time. Was sorry to learn she was a Scientologist, but that never affected my opinion of her performance on the show. I think by the last season the premise had grown old for me.
