Designer Jeans

Writer John Thompson

Has anyone here ever worn designer jeans? Jordache? Sergio Valente? Gloria Vanderbilt? Maybe in the 70s or 80s?

Not at Bullock’s Wilshire mind you, or I. Magnin—just Bullock’s.

Omg I remember Miller's Outpost. Is that the one with stacks and walls of different denims everywhere. Washed, unwashed, light, dark..

The first one I went to was in Vienna, VA back circa1976?

Men's designer jeans always showed a good amount of VPL.

Calvin Klein Jeans and Izoid (alligator) polo was my uniform 1979-1981

Calvin Klein and Jordache, bitches!

by Anonymousreply 16September 8, 2023 7:46 PM

I knew a woman who worked in the ER in the early 80s. It was common to have to cut the jeans off of men who arrived by ambulance (usually from traffic accidents) and it was also common to have various items fall out the front (socks, beans bags, etc...)

by Anonymousreply 17September 8, 2023 7:48 PM

ER? Was that on the ground floor of the mall near the Outpost? Or up the escalator, just past BD/Pickwick and Hot Dog-on-a-Stick (next to Chess King)?

by Anonymousreply 18September 8, 2023 7:52 PM

My best friend was Jordache. I was Calvin Klein. We met in the middle with Izod polos.

That isn't just about jeans. Clothing is routinely cut off as quicker and less strenuous than trying to undress an injured or comatose person

Girbaud jeans were my jean of choice. They 'gave' me an ass to showcase. I still have a pair from 1990, though they no longer give me anything. ;-(

by Anonymousreply 27September 8, 2023 8:46 PM

I wonder if Gloria Vanderbilt ever dressed little Anderson Cooper in a pair of her designer jeans. I'm pretty sure he wasn't wearing Garanimals like the rest of the kids.

by Anonymousreply 28September 8, 2023 8:55 PM

I got $100 in the summer of 1980 to shop for school clothes. I blew most of it on a pair of Calvins ($40) and a pair of Jordache ($35).

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2023 9:04 PM

R28, they did not make designer jeans for children in the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 30September 8, 2023 9:06 PM

I bought one pair of Calvins, and went right back to my Levi 501s. The Calvins just wouldn't fit my body the same way. I preferred the button fly. And I mainly wore alligator shirts (Izod Lacoste).

We had to drive 90 miles to Phoenix to Metrocenter, which we did about twice a year. I remember (this was about 1978) asking my mom if I could get some DESIGNER jeans and she said, "Ask your dad". So I asked him and he said OK. I don't remember what brand they were, but they had extra stitching in some design on the back pockets and that made them cool!

by Anonymousreply 35September 8, 2023 10:45 PM

[quote] they did not make designer jeans for children in the 70s.

They didn't have to. If a pair could fit a 16 year-old street whore in the late 70s then a pair could fit little Anderson Cooper.

by Anonymousreply 36September 8, 2023 11:09 PM

His mom sewed him a special pair, in the VIP lounge of the sweatshop.

by Anonymousreply 37September 8, 2023 11:37 PM

DL would fall into two camps regarding the designer jeans fad of the early 80s.

1) Those who were too old then to wear them, but tried valiantly anyway

2) Those who claim to have been too young in the early 80s.

Sounds like an OK allocation of $$$. However, I would've gotten 2 pairs of Jordache jeans. I don't think the Calvin Kleins were great jeans.

Zody's department store used to sell a knock-off brand of Gloria Vanderbilts. They were called something like "Giorgio Vanwarmer" and the signature across the ass was written the same way as Gloria Vanderbilt.

by Anonymousreply 42September 8, 2023 11:52 PM

The worst "expensive" jeans were Ralph Lauren jeans. I stupidly bought a pair and they were awful.

by Anonymousreply 43September 9, 2023 5:37 AM

I noticed Calvin Klein was on sale at Kmart by 1985.

Jordache died out by what, 1982?, and was available at the flea market next to ninja stars and bad battery-powered touch-pad games.

Britainia fit the best, but that was 1979-1980 for me and everyone made fun of the full legs and patch front pockets. The denim was exquisitely faded. I bought them from Goodwill with my allowance.

by Anonymousreply 44September 9, 2023 5:51 AM

I don't know if these are designer, but I did buy Sedgefield jeans back in the 80s. I was 5'7 and 175 lbs and man those jeans fit like a glove! Ha! Loved them!

I always thought having "Guess" printed on your ass was cringe.

When I move to NYC in 1979, I had a couple of pairs, and some had a modified flare. I got picked up by a guy at a Columbia gay dance - (I wasn't a student there, they were open to anyone) - and the guy told me straight up that flare pants were out of fashion now and I should stick with 501s. I wasn't the least abashed (he was a cute little law student pocket gay and we had a very fun evening) but I did go home and toss out all my pants with flares, and immediately got me to a place where I could buy some broken-in 501s - which remain my go-to jeans

by Anonymousreply 52September 9, 2023 9:21 PM

R52 - The scariest part of your story is the idea of taking an uptown train all the way to Columbia, at night, in 1979.

by Anonymousreply 53September 9, 2023 11:15 PM

With the red satin piping on the pockets... so hot.

by Anonymousreply 54September 10, 2023 1:29 AM

There were some kids who wore “Braxton” jeans to school. I asked my friend what store sells “Braxton” jeans because I have never seen them in any store. She replied “Dollar General”.

by Anonymousreply 55September 10, 2023 1:49 AM

Don't you dare say that like it's a bad thing, R55

by Anonymousreply 56September 10, 2023 2:57 AM

501s only.

With the crotch sandpapered first!

by Anonymousreply 57September 10, 2023 3:03 AM

I never had any. There was a snotty girl in my class during 7th grade. She wore a pair every single day (I think Jordache). Someone accused her of wearing the same pair each day. Her reply was something like she had ten pairs… a kid who sat behind her made a pen mark on the tag. 27 school days in a row she had them on. Maybe she washed them in the weekends, but…

by Anonymousreply 58September 10, 2023 3:14 AM

Levis 501 button fly. In the late 70s and early 80s, I bought and tossed several pairs of designer jeans – they just could not mold to the body like 501s. A new pair of 501s, turned inside out and washed in hot water. While still damp, turn them right side out and sleep in them. Do this 2-3 times and you have a pair of jeans that fit perfectly.

I tried Calvins, Guess, you name it. The only ones that came close to a good fit were Girbaud, but they were too high waisted for me though that was the fashion in the late 80s-early 90s. To this day, I still have a few pairs of 501s that I haul out to wear occasionally.

Agree with R27 on Girbaud, circa 1990. The denim was high quality, the cut and fit flattering even for normal-weight wearers (i.e., not model thin), and the white tab on the fly a cool detail. I had two pairs in college and could slap myself for giving them away.

I watched Fear City several times and couldn't place the actor who looks like JFKJR , except he is even more gorgeous it was Scalia. Fear City is a strange film because it's a titty movie with out of this world gorgeous male leads.

R31, agreed. Button fly devotee. I went to school in a small town in WI. 40k people. One department store. Went to buy a pair of 501s. The clerk charged me a buck & winked. Saw him out that weekend. Hooked up throughout my sophomore year. Sweet guy. . Great fun. Great memory.
