DeSantis Campaign Starts to Panic

Writer Harper Scott

[QUOTE] A top spokesperson for Ron DeSantis’ super PAC is sounding a decidedly dour note on the Florida governor’s presidential prospects, saying his campaign is facing an “uphill battle” and is trailing badly in the key nominating states.

He's only going to win this if Trump drops out or is forced to drop out due to health or legal issues. Which isn't that bad a bet, really. I'd expect DeSantis to stay in the race for that reason.

by Anonymousreply 2July 4, 2023 12:04 AM

Meh, I think it's up to the media. If they hype up Trump DeSantis infighting it would benefit him.

by Anonymousreply 3July 4, 2023 12:09 AM

There is no legal issue that could force Trump to drop out.

by Anonymousreply 4July 4, 2023 12:09 AM

R4 Not even imprisonment when he physically can't commit presidential duties? Well, I don't know, I could see him staying on the ballot if that's allowed.

by Anonymousreply 5July 4, 2023 12:16 AM

R4- Trump will be President from prison if he is elected but I believe the plan is for any of the Republican candidates to win so they can pardon him.

by Anonymousreply 6July 4, 2023 12:16 AM

This ignorant hot head was NEVER going to be the pick. It actually happened a lot sooner than I thought. He's not charismatic AT ALL, lacks spontaneity and has a bunch of other baggage. Trump kept the base happy with his ferociousness and "humor." DeSantis can't work a crowd to save his life. I truly hope Trump is tossed in prison and DeSantis melts down publicly in a major way.

by Anonymousreply 22July 5, 2023 2:23 PM

This is his last chance at POTUS. His hate thang has peaked; he can't keep up the momentum. The world will be a different place in 2028.

by Anonymousreply 23July 5, 2023 2:32 PM

He will be a perennial VP candidate in the years ahead, R23. Like Kamala Harris, that might be the only way he can get to the White House.

by Anonymousreply 24July 5, 2023 2:40 PM

I can't wait for the anti-Trump commercials. I hope his opponents aren't afraid to get detailed and dirty. We hardly ever hear how many mistakes he made. How he just coasted on the Obama economy til he finally had a challenge: Covid (and failed).

by Anonymousreply 25July 5, 2023 2:52 PM

Get out and vote this cycle and take three people with you.

The GOP is toast and they know it. The American media will make out it’s a close race because they LOVE Republicans. But don’t be fooled. They don’t have a chance in hell. Get out and VOTE.

by Anonymousreply 27July 5, 2023 4:09 PM

GOP big donors are abandoning him in favor of Chris Christie who at least knows how to campaign.

by Anonymousreply 29July 5, 2023 4:21 PM

I've said this before on here, R29, but I really think Christie can pull the nomination out of the fire.

He may not be to everyone's liking, but he beats the hell out of Trump and DeSantis.

Remember in 2012 when Hurricane Sandy hit and Christie was getting heat from fellow Republicans for working with Obama in the aftermath of that superstorm? Christie told the Republicans to go fuck themselves, that the welfare of the people of his state was more important than their partisan political bullshit.

Good on him.

by Anonymousreply 30July 5, 2023 4:50 PM

Nobody likes you, Ronnie.

by Anonymousreply 31July 5, 2023 5:05 PM

As much as I hated Christie when he was my governor, he is by far the best of the bunch. But the MAGAs will never go for him.

by Anonymousreply 32July 5, 2023 5:06 PM

[quote] I really think Christie can pull the nomination out of the fire.

How? It seems like a pipe dream to me. Christie isn't in NJ, he's having to appeal to the Republican base who are very Trumpy and hard right wing.

by Anonymousreply 33July 5, 2023 5:29 PM

The only way DeSantis ever becomes president is if Trump picks him for his VP. That’s his only in.

by Anonymousreply 34July 5, 2023 5:35 PM

Agree r30. I remember the Hurricane Sandy/Obama stuff. He’s also calling out Trump on his bs which DeSantis is still too chicken to do. I think if he were nominated, the furious MAGATS would stay home and pout.

by Anonymousreply 35July 5, 2023 5:35 PM

[quote] I think if he were nominated, the furious MAGATS would stay home and pout.

That doesn't make any sense when it's the MAGATS who are going to nominate the candidate!

by Anonymousreply 36July 5, 2023 5:44 PM

The MAGATs wouldn’t be voting for Christie, R36.

by Anonymousreply 37July 5, 2023 7:02 PM

R37 Are you slow? Who's voting for the Republican candidate?

by Anonymousreply 38July 5, 2023 7:05 PM

R33 There is a cadre of white-collar, pro-abortion, socially moderate GOP voters who nonetheless vote the party line. They say without fail, “I hated Trump but liked his policies”.

People are stuck on this idea that all of Trump’s voters were billybobs or blue collar. They weren’t. Those voters would probably go for Christie.

by Anonymousreply 39July 5, 2023 7:11 PM

I agree r39 and people forget that Dump is liked because he’s a loudmouth—which Christie is as well. In fact, Christie has a lot of Dump’s personality traits. Vengeful, big mouth, talks shit.

by Anonymousreply 40July 5, 2023 7:14 PM

It doesn’t matter who is on the GOP ticket. They’d have a better chance with the ghost of Bob Dole, that’s how dire their election chances are. Between Trump, the Supreme Court, reproductive rights, student loans - they’re done for.

by Anonymousreply 41July 5, 2023 7:17 PM

Reality check, Christie averages only a terrible 2.6% in the Republican primary polls!

Here are all the people who do better than him: Trump - DeSantis - Pence - Ramaswamy - Haley - Scott.

Then Christie? What realistic chance does he have?

"Say" being the operative word there, since if they're really socially moderate and pro-choice (not nec. pro-abortion), then, no, they didn't like his policies. They're just as confused or duplicitous as the MAGAts—take your pick.

Not 58, but I believe he's referring to an Echelon Insights poll that purports to show that "Donald Trump has a significant lead over President Joe Biden in key swing states heading into the 2024 presidential election."

So far, I only see it reported on in The Daily Mail and Newsweek, and I'm not linking to either of them.

What does DeSantis have left? He can’t run as a moderate. Ask Christie how well Republican moderates are doing.

His only chance, and it’s a tiny one, is to run to the right of the orange one. If he were a more likable guy his approach might work better.

DeSantis best and maybe only hope is a guy named Smith. If the feds don’t take down Donald he will be the Republican nomination.

by Anonymousreply 87July 7, 2023 3:44 PM

Even the right-wing WSJ editorial board is piling on Ron, criticizing his immigration crackdown (of all things for a Republican paper to harsh on):

"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s economic record may be the biggest selling point of his presidential campaign. Yet he’s doing neither his state nor his campaign a favor with an immigration crackdown that looks excessive and may do economic damage in the fast-growing state.

It makes no sense for Mr. DeSantis to punish his own state."

by Anonymousreply 88July 7, 2023 4:16 PM

And in other news

It’s being reported that the republicans are having trouble pulling off their own debate which is scheduled for next month..

A loyalty pledge being one issue, low polling among several who are not qualifying for the stage, and trump is allegedly planning his own tv special at the exact same time.

With luck this could end up being a real shit show. The moderates among them will be home watching because they did not meet the criteria to be on stage , those on stage will be trying to out right each other, and most republicans would be watching trump instead.

by Anonymousreply 89July 7, 2023 4:33 PM

R88, the WSJ is more gimme-cheap-labor Republican than hate-the-foreign-people Republican.

by Anonymousreply 91July 7, 2023 4:38 PM

Can Florida force convicts to work the farms?

Re Chris Christie, there’s a movement to send him $1 so he makes the debate requirements. I would like to see him onstage bashing Trump and DeSantis in a debate. He would do it whereas the others are too mealymouthed.

by Anonymousreply 92July 7, 2023 4:52 PM

WSJ wants to sell newspapers. They haven't "gone woke" just because they're turning on DeSantis. It's all to appeal to Trump's big business base (the presentable deplorables in the board rooms, the literal 1%) which is still their main audience.

by Anonymousreply 93July 7, 2023 5:12 PM

If you think about it, DeSantis's war with corporate Disney was inevitably going to backfire with the moneyed, stockholder, donor class of the GQP. They are one and the same with the WSJ's readership.

by Anonymousreply 94July 7, 2023 5:15 PM

His chance is not to get to the right of Trump. It’s to be sufficiently MAGA that he picks up Trump voters if Trump implodes. That’s his only hope. Not sure why he’s going full-on fascist except that it’s who he really is.

by Anonymousreply 98July 7, 2023 6:09 PM

He will always provide red meat to conservatives. I doubt he'll fade away anytime soon.

He's useful to them. And he's wholly committed to going after their biggest enemy: us.

I think he'll serve out his term and get hired by a think tank. The traditional route for his ilk is cable news punditry a la Santorum, but Rhonda's ridiculous voice and general unlikeability make that complicated. He could wind up leading a conversion therapy operation or forming a Moms 4 Liberty type group. There are also podcast deals and speaker's tours.

The power invested in such endeavors is unmeasurable but very real--possibly immeasurable. I don't see Rhonda appearing on buses and billboards hawking legal services in our lifetimes. It's fun to mock our enemies, but it's never wise to underestimate them. Rhonda is a buffoon most of the time, but he's a remarkably competent buffoon.

by Anonymousreply 99July 7, 2023 6:10 PM

And yet in an averaging of polls I just saw it was Biden over DeSantis by 1%. And the scary thing is that Biden seems to be on a roll.

I’d take DeSantis for potus $10 if I got really good odds.

The Feds get Trump. Biden missteps or can’t run do to health. His addict son does something truly stupid. A 3rd or 4th in the race to garner votes.

Laugh at him now he could win.

by Anonymousreply 100July 7, 2023 6:20 PM

Remarkably competent, R99? I don't know about that. He's made some seriously stupid choices for someone so allegedly competent.

His Disney fuck up is one for the ages. Going after Trump so early is another big mistake. The wife with the Jackie wannabe capes and gloves - also a mistake. While Don't Say Gay may fly in the swamps of Florida, it's a huge loser in most of the country where they don't actually hate us. I could go on.

He's not as basically dumb as Trump is, although he lacks Trump's "charisma" (according to his fans) and Trump's ability to "explain" things away in a manner that MAGATs like, understand and support with donations.

by Anonymousreply 101July 7, 2023 6:22 PM

Deathsentence should panic. He’s not going anywhere except the shitter.

Even his own campaign knows he’s a prick and behaves like an entitled twatzi at campaign events.

Plus, he’s being sued by MA and another state for flying those poor people across state lines under false pretenses (kidnapping, human trafficking- FELONIES).

He’s a dirtbag who behaves like a dirtbag and nobody wants to have anything to do with him.

by Anonymousreply 102July 7, 2023 7:02 PM

The way this is going, the GOP is going to struggle with low turnout. If Trump isn’t the nominee, his base won’t turn out. If Trump is the nominee, likely to be heavily indicted by then maybe even convicted, Conservatives won’t turn out to vote for him because it will all just be too sickening to support him tearing the country apart.

They’re fucked either way. It may be a slow train but the destination ain’t changing. They’re fucked.

It attacks Disney, the Woke Left, queerness/trans, sexuality in education, & school books.

I am not a Republican, don’t vote Republican, haven’t given money to political candidates, and haven’t requested to be on any candidate mailing lists. I never receive anything from Democrats.

Puddin’ DeSantis’ literature is fascist crap. A sloth shows a better personality.

by Anonymousreply 127July 8, 2023 7:19 PM

I just think if Trump is on the ticket and is further indicted, which is very likely, and even on trial, which is even more likely, in multiple jurisdictions and then the GOP goes forward with convention next August 2024 promoting him as their candidate - sorry, I just think that's so sick-making, it will turn a lot of Americans off. Not the cult members but Americans. That will be even more bizarre than their 2020 convention. And remember, by then, the cases will have been tried, his testimony has been heard through the prosecutor's evidence (Trump will not be taking the stand in any of these cases)...I just don't see this playing out the way the GOP thinks it will. Trump has done nothing to increase his share of the electorate. I see record turnout from Democrats and a lot of disillusioned, deflated, disgusted voters on the other side who will likely stay home. They're not going to vote for Biden but there won't be anybody to vote for on the GOP ticket, Trump or no Trump. His dwindling base will turnout - probably about 22% of the electorate in the end - but they're not enough to actually win. And by November 2024, who is going to think that Trump is fit to occupy the White House again? But he's not going to loosen his grip on the GOP and if they desert him, he'll just split the party further. It's not like those that remain are all going to fall in line behind someone else. I mean, they're fucked.

I don’t think the GOP expects Trump’s nomination to go well. They are just powerless to stop it.

by Anonymousreply 131July 9, 2023 3:02 PM

It seems the more legal trouble that Trump is in, the more the MAGAs want to support him as a “fuck you” to the rest of us.

by Anonymousreply 132July 9, 2023 3:19 PM

The MAGATs have never been so in love with a candidate. He’s like a dream come true for them. They’d vote for Trump if he was on Death Row.

by Anonymousreply 133July 9, 2023 3:44 PM

They love the opportunity to be associated with a martyr to their cause. Like Jesus.

Of course, he isn’t doing anything for them, but that’s his story and they lap it up.

She's like an amalgamation of Palin and Melania, but somehow worse than both. From the hair to the attire, she's just clueless.

by Anonymousreply 139July 9, 2023 3:55 PM

I wonder if Trump was out of the picture (as in dead, since that’s the only way MAGATs would desert him, and even then some of them would believe he’d be returning from the grave) if DeSantis would be popular with them.

by Anonymousreply 140July 9, 2023 3:59 PM

If Trump died, then Tucker Carlson would’ve run for president and taken the MAGA crown.

by Anonymousreply 141July 9, 2023 4:03 PM

Rhonda won't win. He's hurting FL business and he's unlikable. Trump is a grotesque pig but he has a certain humor that appeals to magats.

I was watching a clip the other day of a reporter at some Trump rally asking people what they liked about Trump. All of them (old, white and redneck-y) said "everything". The reporter asked them to be more specific and they couldn't name one specific thing. One woman actually said "trustworthy and honest" which drew a snort of contempt from me. These are low info, bottom of the barrel voters who are gullible and easily brainwashed by media and Trump is media savvy. Trump has a low cunning. Rhonda is just a bigoted goober.

If was March of 2022, reports surfaced that Casey DeSantis had completed chemotherapy and she was declared cancer free.

While it is good to know her health is now in positive shape, her political rhetoric and manner are far from endearing. The DeSantis political handlers are putting her in the forefront because they view she comes across as more engaging and likable compared to Rhonda.

The limitations with that tactic are quite obvious.

DeSantis’s only hope for the nomination is if Dump implodes. Otherwise he won’t get it. He’s trying to double down and try and beat Dump as if both were viable candidates. He should have just tried to stay somewhat sane and wait for whatever happens with Dump to happen. If he did he’d have a chance in the general election. As it is, he seems even more batshit crazy than Dump, and that’s not how to win the general election.

by Anonymousreply 154July 9, 2023 5:13 PM

DeSantis still attacking LGBT, drag shows, school books, educators, teaching black history, Disney, choice with abortions, environmentalists, federal judiciary, funding for Ukraine’s defense, any efforts for firearms restrictions, proposals for expanding health care access, etc., are offending a heck of a lot of people. His views are too extreme for most college educated, suburban Republicans and Independents. Trying to run to the ‘right’ of Trump has very little space. Diehard MAGAs are cultists who are committed to Trump whatever direction he takes them.

DeSantis will implode. Even with his own substantial baggage, Chris Christie will hand DeSantis’ ass to him during debates.

The MAGATs love a showman. They live in a fantasy world where talk is more important than action, which is why they prefer Trump’s dumbed-down populist dialect over DeSatan’s effeminate, whiny, Ivy League manner. How ironic that a blustering, phony macho man who avoided military service and makes false promises Is the conservative favorite, while an ex-military man of action who would actually impose Christo-fascist rule on the country is the conservative dark horse.

Bashing “woke”, what all that may entail, and victimizing LGBT and going on a crusade to deny them rights, is the essence of DeSantis’ governance and campaign.

He has little substance to say on foreign policy, military readiness, environmental issues, spending priorities, taxation, migration/immigration legislation, infrastructure, healthcare, education, etc. Yeah, he’ll utter right-wing talking points on some of these matters; but is vague in proposing solutions.

Most every family, even the conservatives ones, have gay relatives, and/or friends or associates. It exists on all socio-economic levels. Few would want a sibling, child, parent, etc. denied certain human rights, face more discrimination, and be hurtfully marginalized by government entities due to being gay.

DeSantis’ is a foolish and hateful politician.

by Anonymousreply 204July 14, 2023 10:27 PM

As much as I dread Trump, I’m wondering if it’s be a good thing for him to get the nomination because no matter what people say, there is no way that beast will ever be back I. The White House. There are just too many mainstream republicans and swing voters who propelled him the first time that are not coming back. He’s not wining. by Anonymousreply 234July 17, 2023 7:00 PM

Of course it’s better for Democrats if Trump gets the nomination, R234. DeSantis is a shapeshifter who can lull swing state suburbanites into voting for him. When they look at Trump, however, all they’ll see is a monster who tried to overthrow the federal government and maintain power.

Running a national campaign largely based on advocating discrimination of drag queens, trans, gays, woke, migrant workers, etc. appeals mostly to lowly educated bigots. Coming from a guy who is void of charm doesn’t help his angry pitch.

by Anonymousreply 262July 21, 2023 9:55 PM

Coming from a humorless, personality free Ivy League graduate pretending to be a populist "man of the people" would be pitiful if it wasn't so god damned pathetic.

Trouble is, assholes believe every emanation from this guy's gumba mouth.

Florida resident here. DeSantis is universally loathed by almost the entire state, with the possible exception of The Villages and the largely Republican Florida Legislature. As I think David Jolly said..."I've seen garden slugs with more game than Ron DeSantis. "

If I were Casey Desantis (or "Tacky O") I'd be stockpiling chemotherapy drugs. If her breast cancer returns, there is AN ARMY of LGBTQI health care workers who would risk jail time to substitute anti-freeze for her drug cocktail. Stay healthy, Walmart Melania.....

by Anonymousreply 266July 22, 2023 1:55 AM

DeSantis and Pence. Two turds that are going to be hard to polish.

by Anonymousreply 267July 22, 2023 4:07 PM

Oh, I’m sure he still has the support of Little Havana.

Between them and that white trash in The Villages, that’s enough to keep him getting elected governor.

DeSatan already has been Governor twice. That's it for Florida.

by Anonymousreply 270July 22, 2023 7:04 PM

by Anonymousreply 271July 22, 2023 7:37 PM

[QUOTE] At least the weight is falling off DeSantis. He looks much healthier.

The day after he suspends his campaign, he’ll have an assistant at the Chik-fil-A drive thru ordering him $50 worth of food.

by Anonymousreply 272July 22, 2023 8:33 PM

Have you been to any fast food places lately, R272? $50.00 doesn't go very far at any fast food places these days, and eating $50.00 of fast food AT A SINGLE SITTING won't make you morbidly obese.

$11 will get you a Big Mac, fries and a drink at Mickey D's, $18-$20 will get you something similar at Shake Shack.

Now if Rhonda pigs out on $50 of fast food every damn day, then she's got a problem.

When DeSantis suspends the use of Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro, whichever one he is taking, then he'll start packing on the pounds again.

by Anonymousreply 275July 22, 2023 10:14 PM

If going fat, may as well go Chris Christie. I wonder if he is on Type II diabetic and cardiovascular medications.

by Anonymousreply 276July 22, 2023 10:48 PM

R276, if Christie had bariatric surgery, he probably no longer has diabetes, since believe it or not, the surgery pretty much cures diabetes, or puts it into remission in fact, it’s so successful that most people can go off their medicine and/or insulin. An acquaintance who was a bit overweight who had type II was going to have it, but then Covid hit and he put it off and then died.

by Anonymousreply 282July 25, 2023 12:21 AM

DeSantis should have run on an economic populism message instead of his current "trolling the wokes" strategy. A lot of Trump's success was about appearing to be an outsider taking on the elites and sticking up for the working classes. It wasn't just about mocking people and trying to start culture wars which is all DeSantis does.

by Anonymousreply 284July 25, 2023 12:46 AM

Donald Trump, taking on the "elites" and sticking up for the "working classes."

No one is more of an elitist than Donald fucking Trump and no one has been more willing to take advantage of and exploit the working class.

Not that Rhonda is any better, indeed he is not, but that insane pack of lies about the "elites" (meaning himself) and fighting for the "working class" (people he wouldn't piss on if they were on fire) was always such an incredibly stupid thing for him to pretend.

It was our first clue that MAGATs are the stupidest Americans that we have.

by Anonymousreply 285July 25, 2023 1:59 AM

They should definitely "let Ron be Ron" since he's an intensely unlikeable person according to most accounts.

by Anonymousreply 286July 25, 2023 2:02 AM

I wish I believed it was his homophobia or his phoniness or his ambitious wife that is killing his campaign.

But I think it’s only because poor white trash is so enthusiastic about Trump…still. Bad sign that he still commands such loyalty.

by Anonymousreply 287July 25, 2023 2:17 AM

It's fine, R287. It's just the redneck MAGATs, neo-Nazis and the fucking fascists. There aren't enough of them to win a presidential election.

Independents, centrist Democrats and moderate (or even sane) Republicans won't fucking touch Rhonda or Trump with a ten foot pole. That's who the rethuglicans need to pull in for the general election and they won't be able to do that with either of those candidates.

by Anonymousreply 288July 25, 2023 2:40 AM

There may not be enough scumbags voting for these fascist pricks, but they have PLENTY of business support, billionaire support and dark money PAC support.

Not to mention the Saudis who will attempt to fuck up our election on behalf of their disgusting benefactor.

by Anonymousreply 290July 25, 2023 3:00 AM

Would the Ozempic troll find something else to obsess about? She thinks nobody in history has ever lost weight until a few drugs, which promise minimal weight loss, ever came out. Stress can lead to weight loss. That's how DeSatan has done it. As soon as his campaign ends, he will pork back up.

Meanwhile, why isn't Ted Cruise running again? Back in 2016 there were so many candidates running for the Republican nomination, they canceled each other out and gave it to Dump. Where did they all go?

by Anonymousreply 291July 25, 2023 3:24 AM

Let Ron be Ron is the dumbest response ever. Ron being Ron is why his campaign is headed right down the shitter.

by Anonymousreply 292July 25, 2023 1:50 PM

by Anonymousreply 293July 25, 2023 2:37 PM

R291 Ted Cruz is too smart to waste his time and donor base on a hopeless campaign. No one but Trump will be the GOP nominee. It doesn't matter that he's toxic. It doesn't matter that he's in multiple criminal trials. It wouldn't matter if he were comatose inside a prison cell next August.

Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee.

Cruz has time to wait, and although his ego is massive, he knows better than to waste himself on a race he can't possibly win.

by Anonymousreply 331August 10, 2023 2:17 AM

I figured out the problem with the wife — her natural skin tone is very olive. When you look at older photos, like her wedding photos, it isn’t as noticeable and I also believe she had a spray tan. Now she doesn’t tan, so you can see the olive undertones more. It could also be a remnant of her cancer.

by Anonymousreply 333August 10, 2023 5:24 AM

Another issue with Rhonda is the whole Puddin' thing. What kind of message does it send to the yutes of America to have the president (or even just a governor) sticking his fingers in the plastic dessert cup and eating chocolate puddin' with his hands?

A no good very bad message to the yutes, that's what kind! Surely there must be a Republican who eats with utensils?

by Anonymousreply 336August 12, 2023 10:12 AM

Lemme tell ya how this is going to go, you can already see the lines forming.

The GOP has 20% of their voters who do not want Trump on the ticket. They voted for him twice before but they just think he comes with too much baggage now and they want somebody else. These are somewhat sensible people.

Then there are about 23% - to maybe 27% of their voters who are total MAGA and will not accept any candidate other than Trump.

This is a recipe for total GOP disaster.

If Trump is on the ticket, and keep in mind this would be over 15 months from now when he will likely be prosecuted and found guilty in probably at least 1 Federal case (J6, which looks like it will be going 1st) and at least 1 other state case (NY AG) and several more civil cases, with at least 1 Federal case and another state case on-going PLUS all of the fake elector trials which are going to play hard in those states, as Trump deserting his supporters and getting them in trouble, etc., look for many of these Trump supporters to recant their support now that they've been sentenced to serve 14 years in jail, etc. SO, all of that is yet to come and people, even Trump supporters, are tired of it. The people who will get the most of this are the Democrats who have been waiting, rather patiently, for about 7 years for this moment and will feel very vindicated. SO, if Trump is on the ticket, there will be a lack of enthusiasm for GOP voters, many of whom will feel as though they've been duped all these years and trust no one.

If someone else is on the ticket, the lack of enthusiasm will be even greater from MAGA. Whomever this candidate is, they don't stand a chance.

AND if Trump isn't on the ticket, there's always the chance of him running 3rd party which will just further cement the growing split in the GOP. I'm sure his people are already looking into this and planning and plotting what would be another huge fund-raising boon for him.

SO, again: the GOP is FUCKED.

by Anonymousreply 337August 12, 2023 1:43 PM

^good points. Democrats can’t be complacent though. Turnout will be critical. Abortion and democracy issues will be motivators to vote for a big portion of Democrats.

Biden doesn’t excite necessarily, but the alternative is horrible.

by Anonymousreply 338August 12, 2023 2:03 PM

R338 The "excitement" argument is such fucking nonsense. People used it to elect a felon reality TV star over a stable and brilliant administrator in 2016, and they'll do it again.

We're not electing a best friend, or a game show host, or a future spouse. We're picking the nation's chief executive for four years. Who gives a fuck if that person has sizzle or style?

This stupid country.

by Anonymousreply 339August 12, 2023 2:34 PM

Same shit with Dubya in 2000, R339. People were asked who would you rather have a beer with: Al Gore or Dubya. Fratboy Dubya won. See where that got us.

Too many asshole Americans are stuck in their high school years. You're not voting for Prom King and Queen, you're voting for the Presidency of the United States.

I really think it's absolutely necessary for someone to start seriously regulating: 1. If people are qualified to get married.

2. If people are qualified to have children.

3. If you should be allowed to vote.

[quote] This stupid country.

It’s not “this country,” it’s human nature.

Before he was made chancellor of Germany, Hitler had a reichwehr (Weimar-period German army) observer attend his speeches and take notes, to determine if he was inciting action against the government. (Other party leaders had this too.)

The observer was an intelligent and educated man. His notes indicate surprise at Hitler’s reputation as a great speaker (this was the huge deal about Hitler in the late 20s to early 30s — his speaking.) The observer said Hitler was saying things a child should be able to see right through.

Yet the audience of thousands were mesmerized and would cheer and clap for five minutes at a time.

Logic always takes a back seat to emotion, to irrationality.

by Anonymousreply 342August 12, 2023 3:08 PM

R342 - because guys like Dump tell people what they want to believe. Many voters are also motivated by invisible boogeymen, and Dump knows how to play into that. Same way Hitler did. Migrants, trans, baby killers - Dump is going to save us all from that. Meanwhile, healthcare, social services, education and infrastructure continue to crumble. It’s funny how people see these invisible boogeymen coming at them, but not the actual decay around them. And the 1% continues to reap the benefits.

by Anonymousreply 343August 12, 2023 3:26 PM

R343, I absolutely think that’s how Dump got elected and how he keeps supporters. I’m wondering, though, how people are reacting to his recent campaign speeches, which seem to be all about how he’s being harassed because of who he is and how the election was stolen (lots of lies in his speeches). It doesn’t seem like there’s much about migrants, the deep state, etc., and it’s mostly woe is me. Admittedly, I don’t watch his speeches, but the little bit I get is that the speeches are VERY self centered.

by Anonymousreply 344August 12, 2023 3:47 PM

R344 - as long as he remains a puppet, I don’t think Republicans care. For all his bluster, he’s easily controlled.

by Anonymousreply 345August 12, 2023 4:29 PM

No puppet! No puppet! YOU’RE the puppet, R345.

They know they only have about 25-30% hard ceiling for their bullshit so they have to somehow soften up the 20-30% undecided/low information voters to sit next year out.

It’s the only choice they have. Indicted and imprisoned, the Fat orange traitor is their candidate. Period.

R357, I’ll accept that! I’ve been saying for awhile (ever since DeSantis imploded) that if Dump drops out, Christie will be the nominee, and my family (of liberals) thinks I’m nuts. But it’s a process of elimination. No way it’s Ramaswamy or Haley—just never. And Tim Scott is a nobody. Now, a nobody can come on and take the nomination (like Obama) but they damn well better be charismatic, which Tim Scott is not. Who’s left? Christie.

Christie absolutely cannot win in a general election, so I see perhaps somebody like a Romney step in, but I doubt it.

by Anonymousreply 358August 16, 2023 4:36 PM

R358, why do you see Christie unable to win in a general? He'd have a lot of New York money behind him. Do you think he'd alienate a part of the rightwing base just by not being Trump?

by Anonymousreply 359August 16, 2023 4:40 PM

I'm with R349. If Trump drops out for whatever reason, DeSantis is the next Trumpiest candidate. The deplorables will choose him, even if they have to hold their noses.

by Anonymousreply 360August 16, 2023 4:41 PM

And if DeSantis gets the nomination, we could put Dianne Feinstein up against him and he'd still lose.

by Anonymousreply 361August 16, 2023 5:18 PM

R360, but DeSantis is on a downward trajectory. I don’t see him pulling out of it, in fact I see it continuing. The more people see him, the more they dislike him.

by Anonymousreply 362August 16, 2023 7:20 PM

[quote] The more people see him, the more they dislike him.

He doesn’t need people to like him. He just needs Republicans and enough independents to dislike Biden even more than him. The polls of a Biden - DeSantis matchup keep going back and forth.

by Anonymousreply 363August 16, 2023 7:32 PM

R363, yes he does need people to like him. Or at least not dislike him. Im referring to the Republican nomination.

No way he beats Biden in the general election.

by Anonymousreply 364August 16, 2023 7:36 PM

John McCain was on a downward trajectory in the summer of 2007, dropping 12 points over four months to rank behind Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. Early polls are very poor predictors of eventual presidential nominees.

by Anonymousreply 365August 16, 2023 7:38 PM

It’s like in 2016 when people said Trump couldn’t win because so many people disliked him. What they didn’t factor in was how loathed Hillary was, more than Trump, in enough states to make an electoral majority. Granted, Biden is not as despised as much as Hillary is, but his unfavorability is making it a 50/50 with DeSantis.

by Anonymousreply 366August 16, 2023 8:15 PM

In fact, she's approximately 3 million votes *less* loathed than Trump.

by Anonymousreply 368August 17, 2023 5:37 PM

DeSantis and Ramaswamy are spewing extreme right-wing political views that make Trump look, by comparison, somewhat reasonable if he wasn’t carrying so much baggage of corruption.

Corporations/big business don’t like DeSantis’ attacks and vindictiveness toward Disney and Anheuser-Busch. Government/politicians may seek to regulate corporations pertaining to environmental, banking, and monopolistic matters; and advocate they pay a higher share in taxation; but all that is fair game and appropriate roles for government. What corporations find offensive, is DeSantis viciously intruding in their marketing initiatives. DeSantis wants private enterprise to discriminate against the LGBT+ communities.

by Anonymousreply 369August 17, 2023 5:40 PM

I don’t care what anybody says, the idea that the GOP is going to vote for a President Ramaswamy is just hilarious. Sure, Jan. Same with Tim Scott. They keep these candidates around so they can claim they’re not racist, meanwhile their latest catchphrase is: NO RIGGERS! Uh huh.

by Anonymousreply 370August 17, 2023 10:37 PM

I totally agree r370. Anyone who’s watched Dumpers being interviewed knows a foreigner, a black guy and an Indian woman have no chance in hell. Neither does Pence.

Maybe if they get another white guy who’s obnoxious, vindictive and sounds like Dump, that person might have a chance!

by Anonymousreply 371August 17, 2023 11:04 PM

[quote] I don’t care what anybody says, the idea that the GOP is going to vote for a President Ramaswamy is just hilarious. Sure, Jan. Same with Tim Scott.

Yet, the smart money is on Trump picking Scott as his running mate.

A closeted gay black man for Republican VP?

Puddin’ needs to be captured by three drag queens and they pour and rub body oil all over his tiny hinny.

[quote]A closeted gay black man for Republican VP?

The Republicans aren't going to nominate Cory Booker for VP.

by Anonymousreply 376August 18, 2023 3:39 AM

Scott would be a smart choice. Not so much with Black women, but with Black men, with whom Trump was already doing quite well for a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 377August 18, 2023 6:38 AM

Scott is too gummy for the mainstream audience.

by Anonymousreply 378August 18, 2023 11:30 AM

[quote]Scott would be a smart choice. Not so much with Black women

Not so much with the GOP's white supremacist wing, either.

by Anonymousreply 379August 18, 2023 11:32 AM

Years ago, I, like a lot of people, thought the GOP would have the first black president, because of Colin Powell. It turned out he wasn't presidential material, so everyone's probably better off it didn't happen.

by Anonymousreply 380August 18, 2023 11:46 AM

‘’Puddin’ and Peeper’

Rhonda picks Locker Room Gym as the VP running mate.

by Anonymousreply 381August 18, 2023 12:21 PM

Tim Scott is not a viable presidential candidate, and he's delusional if he thinks he is viable. He's a single black man.

Strike 1: Black

Strike 2: Single

Strike 3: Not attractive - You either need to be TV ready or have loads of charisma, he lacks both.

Strike 4: The man is gay - does he really want the media and social media to dig into why he's been "single" all these decades?

SC is fine have their token closet gays represent them, but the rest of America is not going to play nice if one of these self-hating fools ever made it to the Republican nomination.

by Anonymousreply 382August 18, 2023 1:00 PM

R382, the same sources who were quite early in the '20 cycle saying that Harris was a mortal lock to be Biden's pick are saying the same thing now about Scott.

by Anonymousreply 383August 18, 2023 1:07 PM

What value would Tim Scott actually deliver to the Trump ticket?

People actually think the party of White Christian Nationalists are going to put a “virgin” (read: gay) black man a heartbeat away from the presidency? Really? Tim Scott? A 57 year-old VIRGIN?

People saying this are just trolling.

by Anonymousreply 384August 18, 2023 1:11 PM

[quote] Not so much with the GOP's white supremacist wing, either.

As we surely know by now, Trump has unwavering allegiance among his base.

by Anonymousreply 385August 18, 2023 1:14 PM

Also, Tim Scott makes the ticket.

Cue all the young, black hustlers he’s rimmed over the years.

I cannot see Trump standing next to Tim Scott, holding hands and raising their arms to rally the troops. Sounds VERY awkward. Also, as mentioned, Scott isn’t exactly Denzel. Trump and Scott are like oil and water.

Also, cue all the black men calling him an Uncle Tom. Cue all the black women saying, “Why should I let a 57 year-old VIRGIN dictate my reproductive rights?!”

Yeah, I don’t think this is going to work out as some people think it is. Also, BIRTHERISM.

Trump already looks like a microwaved bag of shit. He’s going to look a lot worse or maybe even drop dead by election day. I don’t think MAGA is going to go for a black VP. No way.

by Anonymousreply 386August 18, 2023 1:17 PM

Tim Scott has said he is no longer a virgin:

The politician’s public claims of virginity date to the early and mid-’90s, when he was running for city council in Charleston, South Carolina.

But Scott can no longer claim to be a virgin, it seems. After he was appointed to the Senate in 2012, the National Journal asked him if he was sticking to his pledge of abstinence.

“Not as well as I did then,” Scott said. He was 46 at the time.

[quote] Also, cue all the black men calling him an Uncle Tom.

Yes, that will be the predominant view, but Trump doesn't have to win a majority of the Black vote. If he continues to make inroads among Black men, that's a big deal. But, with his overwhelming negatives, it still won't be enough for Trump to win.

by Anonymousreply 388August 18, 2023 1:39 PM

"Puddin’ needs to be captured by three drag queens and they pour and rub body oil all over his tiny hinny."

Rhonda's got far too much acreage back there to call it a "tiny hinny."

Yosemite National Park could fit on that fat, flabby ass.

by Anonymousreply 389August 18, 2023 1:47 PM

In South Carolina, there’s an abundance of closeted gay Republican politicians. Heck, some would hang out at the gay bars across the street from the state Capitol. One bar is a private club.

by Anonymousreply 390August 18, 2023 2:19 PM

[quote] If he continues to make inroads among Black men

Is there any real evidence he's doing that? I know some exit polls in 2020 suggested he did, but the overall data suggests Trump's support among black men stayed the same from 2016 to 2020, about 13%, and possibly went down a point or two.

Haley and Scott fear taking-on Trump.

Chris Christie criticizes Trump. Asa Hutchinson does so a little bit. Hurd is softly in the Trump critic lane.

Any candidate refusing to confront Trump is not worthy to be running. Pence is the worst. He knew firsthand about Trump’s criminal behavior.

DeSantis and Ramaswamy doubling down on fascism while ass-kissing Trump.

by Anonymousreply 393August 18, 2023 2:32 PM

R391, Trump improved on Romney & that may have been the difference in his winning the Electoral College.

by Anonymousreply 394August 18, 2023 2:35 PM

So he "made inroads" in 2016 over Romney in 2012, but there doesn't seem to be concrete evidence that he "continues" to do so with black male voters in 2023 (aside from the occasional millionaire anti-vaxer like Ice Cube or Kanye).

by Anonymousreply 395August 18, 2023 2:38 PM

^ This analysis would suggest otherwise. And it's consistent with the "Great Realignment" we're seeing in the Trump error, er, era, with many former republicans, most especially women with college degrees, now voting for Democrats, & more less educated ("the poorly educated" whom Trump professes to love) migrating to the Republican side.

Debate night, whatever Trump does, it was announced Kari Lake will be with him. Trump wants a very outspoken running mate for VP, who will vigorously claim the 2020 election was stolen along with her defeat in 2022 for the Arizona Governor’s race. Trump and Lake are tight. Trump May defy the pundits, and pick Lake, even if her loud mouth may step on his insistence to be the center of attention. Like Trump, Lake is eager to tell self-serving lies that are whoppers.

To the dismay of Lady Lindz, Lake is in Mar-a-Lago extensively.

by Anonymousreply 397August 18, 2023 2:52 PM

R396, that NBC article (from election day 2020) is based on exit polls; further data and study don't tell the same story. Furthermore, the article only claims (based on those exit polls) that black men's support for the Democrat went down 2% between 2016 and 2020 (notice the word "slightly" in the title): even if those numbers had proved accurate, it wouldn't mean much. And NBC's numbers don't indicate what percentage of black men voted for a 3rd-party candidate. Maybe a black male running mate would help Trump's numbers—but I doubt Scott's the best man for that job.

by Anonymousreply 398August 18, 2023 3:02 PM

If Scott was elected VP, Trump would assign him to be one of the White House butlers.

Someone upthread said Gym Jordan, and that makes more sense to me. I just don’t see Dump nominating anything but a white guy. He’s from a different era and a racist/misogynist. And he know his base is racist and misogynistic. It will definitely be a white man.

by Anonymousreply 401August 18, 2023 3:24 PM

Oh, dear me at r401, “he knows…”

by Anonymousreply 402August 18, 2023 3:25 PM

Trump doesn't need Ohio, R401, so it won't be Jordan. All the chatter so far has been that it will be a woman ... or Tim Scott.

by Anonymousreply 403August 18, 2023 3:27 PM

I find it really interesting that South Carolina has not one, but two closet queens as Senators.

by Anonymousreply 404August 18, 2023 3:31 PM

R403, it’s just that—chatter. And Dump doesn’t pick people because of the state he needs—he had Indiana already so why Pence? Because Spence is a milquetoast who strengthened Dump with his base. At the top of the list will be someone he’s comfortable with who doesn’t take attention from him, and who strengthens his base. And that will be a white guy.

by Anonymousreply 405August 18, 2023 3:44 PM

Good lord, lots of typos today… and this is after my espresso! At r405, I obviously meant Pence.

by Anonymousreply 406August 18, 2023 3:45 PM

A new haircut would do wonders for him.

by Anonymousreply 407August 18, 2023 3:46 PM

by Anonymousreply 408August 18, 2023 4:00 PM

[quote] Because Pence is a milquetoast who strengthened Dump with his base.

Yes, in '16 he needed to shore up support among evangelicals. He doesn't need to do so anymore.

by Anonymousreply 409August 18, 2023 4:00 PM

What about Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota who is running for the Republican nomination? He’s being doing much of the “anti-woke” sabot-rattling legislative stuff but without DeSantis’ cringey Slytherin House energy. I think he’s a legitimate billionaire which I could see being a dealbreaker for Trump, who would probably have major qualms about media chatter about him being less rich than his VP nominee.

by Anonymousreply 410August 18, 2023 4:23 PM

I'm not sure who Dump would choose at this point, but I agree with the posters upthread who said it must be someone B-O-R-I-N-G, like Pence. Dump cannot be upstaged, so Timmmay Scott would fit that bill. But like others have said too, he has dark skin--MAGA won't go for that.

by Anonymousreply 411August 18, 2023 4:26 PM

[quote] He’s being doing much of the “anti-woke” sabot-rattling legislative stuff but without DeSantis’ cringey Slytherin House energy.

To his credit, he has NOT been doing the anti-woke stuff.

by Anonymousreply 412August 18, 2023 5:00 PM

[quote]Strike 3: Not attractive - You either need to be TV ready or have loads of charisma, he lacks both.

I agree with you R382 that Scott being unattractive is the kiss of death. That is, if his record were pristine, which it is not. Some of his statements by themselves will also bar him from getting the nomination.

by Anonymousreply 413August 18, 2023 5:31 PM

[quote]And Dump doesn’t pick people because of the state he needs—he had Indiana already so why Pence?

The notion of geographical balance, or picking a VP to win a state, is something from previous centuries. A good pick would be one to fill in a gap. Trump needed someone really religious obviously, since he was so far on the sinful side.

by Anonymousreply 414August 18, 2023 5:38 PM

Trump can pick Lindsey Graham. Lachlan Murdoch, Jesse Watters, Sean Hannity, and the rest of Fox, have been enthralled with Lindsey for many years. The media, right, left, and middle, adore Lindsey. Even Democratic Senators don’t hesitate to reference Lindsey. No one loves and defends Trump as much as Lindsey.

Melania wants to do her own thing. Lindsey can step-in and be by Trump’s side at all official and social functions.

That's only because Lindsey will go on camera on a moment's notice.

by Anonymousreply 419August 18, 2023 6:47 PM

His base won't stand for Miss Lindzabelle. Please. He's opposed Trump in the past, which won't fly. He's also gayer than gay and effeminate to high heaven. Trump is not stupid. The Senatrix is useful to him but not VP material. He'll pick a total sycophant who's all in for him. A Kari Lake type, but probably not Kari Lake. Someone whose whole future he can keep threaten to destroy if they get out of line.

by Anonymousreply 420August 18, 2023 7:09 PM

I've come to reconsider whether or not the MAGA rubes would accept a black or brown person as VP. I do think Trump could convince them it's okay-they do whatever he says. After all, they were the footsoldiers in his coup and are going to jail for him.

I think that Vivek dude could be his VP choice-he says batshit crazy things that they love, he's decent looking and plays well on the teevee, and won't upstage Trump. And right now he's all in, which is what Trump is looking for--unquestioning, uncritical loyalty.

by Anonymousreply 421August 18, 2023 7:13 PM

r386 he's a black Republican, he has likely never done anything sexual with another black person. I'm sure there are loads of white hustlers that could say some things.
