Dead of Winter (1987)

Writer Andrew Hansen

I love 80s thrillers and I'm just watching this for the first time. It starts off really well, but I'm halfway through now and it's going a bit bonkers. I still have no clue what the ferk is going on, though. Mary Steenburgen! Roddy McDowell! Arthur Penn! Any fans?

very effective twist and criminally underrated!

Roddy McDowell is really creepy in it.

Mary Steenburgen looked so much like Kate Bush in that movie - before the terrible haircut anyway.

I loved that movie when I was a teenager.

She's been in some amazing films.

It just finished. Great ending!! I loved the music, too. I think my favorite thing in the world is watching a really well made 80s thriller with atmospheric music. This was one of the better ones I've seen. Another thing I really enjoy are films where weather plays an important role. Like the wind in KEY LARGO, for example. The winter in this film was really well down. It was quite palpable, with the snow storms and the sound of the brisk winds outside, etc. Excellent!!!

I thought it went off the rails after a good start. Kind of like Arthur Penn's career.

Fantastic little sleeper. Glad you enjoyed it, OP. Better than all the overrated shit shows A24 has been releasing lately.

I just watched it ... very campy and a wet dream if you're into finding plot holes!

I watched it many years ago and loved it! It’s one of those movies you don’t see any more.

It’s a lot of fun if you don’t think about it too hard. Feels like a big budget throwback to those 60s/70s made-for-TV thrillers. I can easily imagine Patty Duke and Ray Milland in the leads. Not sure who would take the Roddy McDowell part. Dick Sargent?

It's a good little film, although Roddy McDowell distractingly overacts in it (as always).
