Why would you bother putting video shot for 4x3 NTSC on BluRay, R184? The masters for most of this collection probably are on VHS. We're not talking about Hollywood pictures shot on actual film, or even preserved on high quality videotape. And what extras? Do you think there were minions fluttering about shooting video behind the scenes? If you're lucky, there might be a few minutes of footage before the action got going, or some out takes that were cut for whatever reason, but those are pretty rare. Videotape was prohibitively expensive in the early days, and frequently source reels were reused.
If the original material was shot on film, mostly likely 8mm, the process of converting it to video is prohibitively expensive. The last time I looked into it, telecine was about $100 per minute. I've seen people actually just set up a projector and a video camera, and roll the film while pointing the camera at the screen.
And then there's color correcting, removing drop-outs, fixing audio problems... incredibly time consuming work.
There's always folks who say they would like a copy of this porn movie or that, but when the time comes to actually buy the DVD or pony up the monthly subscription fee, they evaporate. And let's face it, anyone who wants a copy can always just download it for free anyway. As so many posters here have said, in thread after thread, there's actually anybody who pays for porn anymore? Uh, no, there isn't. And when you're talking about movies that are up to 40 years old, the market is even smaller.
The straight market is only slightly better, R207, and only because there are so many more straight guys who buy porn.
There was a brief rush in the early '00s when the condom-only crowd realized they had hours and hours of movies of raw dick going up ass, and frantically tried to label them "bareback" and re-release them. Chi Chi did release some of the old such Catalina titles, but didn't realize that her fetishization of cum had transformed the industry, specifically the type of action shown, and these old "pre-condom classics" (as they were sometimes billed) had about as much in common with bareback as Gone With The Wind has in common with Titanic (not trying to draw any other parallel there, so no hate!).
Sorry to disappoint. Most of these old movies are lost and gone forever. Like I said before, the only reason anyone would remaster and re-release an old gay porn movie is because they have a personal connection to the film or are truly devoted to preserving this tiny bit of our history regardless of the lack of any kind of return.
