Cher vs. Linda Hunt
Harper Scott
The epic gay 1983 supporting actress battle.
Nowadays Linda Hunt would be called racist for yellowing her skin for the role but this was the 80s.
Vote!! (you can also vote for Amy Irving's strangely comatose work in Yentl or G in The Big Chill though her teeny tiny titties probably traumatized a lot of gay boys or Alfree Woodard who was actually really good as always.)

Damn. Cher is for Silkwood not Moonstruck.

I actually like Close and The Big Chill the best. And I'm not even a baby boomer.

I've always thought Melinda Dillon deserved a nomination for A Christmas Story.
| by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 2, 2018 2:12 AM |
Way more diverse nominees than any time since it's just delightful.

Hunt deserved the award, but Cher would have been a fine winner, everyone rightfully adores Alfre Woodard and Close would have spared DL a decade of terrible M posts. So there were several good choices.
Amy Irving has the dubious distinction of being one of two people nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie for the same performance. The Razzies got it right. I’d probably have Tess Harper from “Tender Mercies,” Michelle Pfeiffer from “Scarface” or another actress from “The Big Chill” take her place.

Cher should have won it because she deserved it, and then Glenn would have won for Fatal Attraction so we could have killed two birds with one stone.

Is Hunt Asian at all?
I never really believed she was a man. I don't know what it would have been like seeing the film not knowing she was a woman.
| by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 2, 2018 2:36 AM |
God, can you imagine the shitstorm over Linda Hunt (a white woman playing an Asian man) if The Killing Fields were made today?
| by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 2, 2018 2:40 AM |
Hunt won all the critics awards but Cher won the supporting actress globe. I think Hunt was fine but looking back 35 years later I don’t think it was really a transformative brilliant acting performance. She cut her hair short and looked like a small man. Plus I think at this point Cher really wasn’t taken THAT seriously as an actress and maybe seen more as a flash in the pan. Plus Hunt I think had the “she will never have another shot at winning an Oscar” factor that helped her vote tally.
It’s been years since I’ve seen TYOLD but I really don’t remember a big Oscar scene from Hunt in it. Close was just carrying the torch for the rest of the cast as the lone nominee. Irving of course didn’t do anything special in Yentl. But Woodards nomination was deserved.

R8 "The Killing Fields" cast Asian actors as Asian characters, so it would probably be the same if it were remade today.
| by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 2, 2018 2:56 AM |
But r10 a white woman played an Asian man. That would not go over well in 2018 SJW-World.
| by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 2, 2018 2:57 AM |
Ann Jillian should of been nominated fir Mr. Mom.
| by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 2, 2018 2:58 AM |
R11 I think you have mixed up "The Killing Fields" with "The Year of Living Dangerously".
| by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 2, 2018 3:01 AM |
I was shocked that Loni Anderson was overlooked for "Stroker Ace"

Silkwood is a perfect movie
| by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 2, 2018 3:32 AM |
r15 agreed. I think it's Meryl Streep's best performance. She is so un-Meryl in it. Not once do I detect Meryl - she completely becomes Karen Silkwood. Mike Nichols was a wonderful director. Streep, Kurt Russell and Cher were all excellent.

r6 Glenn Close did not deserve an Oscar for Fatal Attraction. She should be glad she was even nominated.
| by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 2, 2018 4:02 AM |
But Glenn did deserve it for Dangerous Liaisons, so this would have made up for losing that.
| by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 2, 2018 4:22 AM |
Glenn Close gave a fantastic performance in Fatal Attraction. 30-plus years later, that movie is still part of the American cultural lexicon, which is no small achievement.
| by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 2, 2018 4:36 AM |
Plus Close was typecast as the good woman prior to Fatal Attraction so it really came as a shock that she could change directions so drastically.
| by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 2, 2018 4:37 AM |
I still think Cher deserved her Oscar for Moonstruck but 1987 was a tough year - many great performances. Close's performance was just as deserving.

Most haven't seen Alfre Woodard's great performance in CROSS CREEK, a little-known film that is almost all but forgotten today. She is remarkable.
And I'm with R3: Melinda Dillon should have been nommed for A CHRISTMAS STORY.
The only one that really doesn't belong on this list is Amy Irving. So many other worthy choices. Was she still Mrs. Steven Spielberg then? Is that how that happened?
| by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 2, 2018 5:11 AM |
She was still married to Spielberg at that time.
| by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 2, 2018 5:27 AM |
The nominees that year should have been:
Cher, Silkwood
Alfre Woodard, Cross Creek
Melinda Dillon, A Christmas Story
Sandra Bernhard, The King of Comedy
Michelle Pfeiffer, Scarface
| by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 2, 2018 5:50 AM |
oh yes. Sandra Bernhard was that year. She won a critics circle award. I've heard her say she didn't know how to play the publicity game back then. Nowadays she said she would have hired a publicist to parlay the National Society Award into an Oscar nomination.
(and back then there were only like three or four pre-critics awards so they meant more.)
| by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 2, 2018 6:30 AM |
The thinking was they nominated Irving just to spite Streisand.
After she was overlooked in all categories she couldn't claim they didn't watch the film since Irving was nominated.

I love her in that film. She's so unique and even funny at times.

Annette Bening in Grifters
| by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 8, 2018 5:20 AM |
You're off by several years, R29.
| by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 8, 2018 5:42 AM |
I just like Annette Bening. She was robbed for Best Supporting Actress in Grifters and Best Actress in American Beauty.
| by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 8, 2018 5:55 AM |
I would have nominated Kathleen Turner in “The Man With Two Brains” over Glenn that year.
| by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 8, 2018 7:06 AM |
Wasn't Linda Hunt playing a man? What is the matter with you ignorant assholes? Linda was fabulous, didn't she win the Oscar?
| by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 8, 2018 8:08 AM |
R9 is an ignorant turd, Linda's acting was superior.
| by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 8, 2018 8:14 AM |
Is TYOLD based on a true story ? Why not change the character to a woman? It happens all the time.
| by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 8, 2018 8:17 AM |
Fuck you, you stupid cunt, it was originally a book and probably a true story. Even though Mel and Sigourny were in the film, Linda was the star in that movie.
| by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 8, 2018 8:45 AM |
It was a novel, I guess. It was a beautiful, wonderful film. It is a shame that Mel was in it, he is a Nazi and not fit...he did look gorgeous and of course you can't tell that he is a Nazi.
| by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 8, 2018 8:53 AM |
Don’t let Linda’s short stature fool you...I think she probably could kick Cher’s chapless ass. The low center of gravity works in her favor.
| by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 8, 2018 9:16 AM |
Cher should have won, she was terrific in Silkwood. It and Mask are her 2 best performances IMO. Glenn was fortunate to be nominated for this and The Natural in 1984. She got no other nominations for either performance.
Glenn should have won for Fatal Attraction in 87 and Meryl should have won for A Cry in the Dark in 88 - still her best performance to this day and much superior to Foster in The Accused.
