No way her '80s shit eclipses her '70s material.

by Anonymousreply 2April 7, 2018 10:48 AM

Good choice, r3.

My kind of guilty pleasure is her cover of "Walking in Memphis" (or, as she sings it, Memfuss).

Will "Fernando" ever make such a list?

by Anonymousreply 4April 7, 2018 1:03 PM

Give me a little Just Like Jesse James!

by Anonymousreply 5April 7, 2018 1:05 PM

For once, I agree with an R1

Talking of covers, back in the salad days she chased the bright Elusive Butterfly of love.

Eldergay, here.

Top three:

1). Take Me Home (12" version, not the hideously edited single)

2). Dark Lady

3). Half Breed

by Anonymousreply 13April 7, 2018 4:15 PM

OP you didn't include the song "We All Sleep Alone" which is my favorite

by Anonymousreply 14April 7, 2018 4:18 PM

I'm hoping she hits a #1 with something from Mamma Mia!2. She'd break her own record for the oldest female to have a #1 hit at 72.

by Anonymousreply 15April 7, 2018 4:20 PM

R15 sorry but that'll never happen now, she better start tanning and get ass implants. We're in trashy CardiB land now!

by Anonymousreply 17April 7, 2018 5:12 PM

"Back on the Street Again", from I,Paralyze. It's a great anthem for any former hooker who decides to throw her hat back in the ring.

There are just too many hits to list a favorite.

The CD with “Walking in Memphis” was one of my favorites. I can’t remember what the title was though. I think it had a bunch of covers.

by Anonymousreply 19April 7, 2018 5:17 PM

You never know with Mamma Mia! I'm sure there will be popular dance mixes, but it would be pretty cool to have a real #1. Don't count her out- she's been in the biz 55 years now.

by Anonymousreply 20April 7, 2018 5:17 PM

All she really wanted to do, was baby be friends with us.

Yeah, she had a hit with a Bob Dylan cover, and then went all Bob Mackie on it years later.

I like bang bang. Otherwise I really don't like her. The horrible plastic surgery, the tacky dresses, the extravert cheap whore persona, the shit music, and the dumb liberal politics are too much for me.

by Anonymousreply 24April 7, 2018 7:42 PM

Dumb liberal politics? Lick my ass.

I'm actually quite fond of her version of "Alfie."

Cher's hits were all so cheesy. I think my favorite song hers was one of her cheesiest, '"The Way of Love". It went:

When you meet a boy

That you like a lot

And you fall in love

But he loves you not

If a flame should start

As you hold him near

Better keep your heart

Out of danger, dear

For the way of love

Is a way of woe

And the day may come

When you'll see him go

Then what will ya do

When he sets you free

Just the way that you

Said goodbye to me.

The reason “I Paralyze” sounds a lot like ONJ’s “Magic” is because it had the same producer.

by Anonymousreply 37April 8, 2018 2:42 PM

I loved the UK version of It's A Man's World CD, but the US version wasn't as good. Cher really toned down the vibrato and the record company thought too many of the songs didn't sound like Cher and fiddled with it.

by Anonymousreply 38April 8, 2018 3:44 PM

R37: I believe I Paralyze OMJ recorded first. They wiped her lead vocals off. You can hear her harmony vocals.

by Anonymousreply 39April 8, 2018 3:54 PM

It was an Olivia Newton-John reject. John Farrar and Stephen Kipner wrote and produced it for Cher.

by Anonymousreply 40April 8, 2018 4:16 PM

I don't know of anyone who doesn't cringe when Believe plays on the radio. That sound was played to death. Jesse James still sounds incredible today. Awesome song. Also like her collaboration with Peter Cetera, After All. Of that list, I chose Shoop Shoop. Her version improves quite a bit over the original.

by Anonymousreply 41April 8, 2018 4:31 PM

If I Could Turn Back Time maybe has aged better than Believe, r41, both because it wasn't played to death everywhere we went, but also because it was released with a great, memorable video during the brief span of years when music videos were a big thing on cable TV

Does anyone (who likes her) know why she still sounds so good? Do contraltos keep their voices longer? Cher sings better than she did in he 60s and 70s. I did read she still takes voice lessons.

by Anonymousreply 49April 9, 2018 12:00 AM

I love the original version of One By One. Got me through a rough time after a breakup (I know it's the opposite of a breakup song but whatever.)

Cher's voice is so strong. She's some kind of freak of nature. She always sounds so good.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2018 4:25 AM

[quote] Does anyone (who likes her) know why she still sounds so good?

I believe it's called autotune.

by Anonymousreply 53May 20, 2018 4:30 AM

"Yoo BEDD-uh SIDDOWN, keyuhds!"

(Oh, and someone who knows how needs to post the YouTube clip of the "Sonny & Cher Christmas Special," where she brutalizes "O Holy Night.")

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2018 4:56 AM

She still sounds great live, it's not autotune. Happy 72 Cher!

by Anonymousreply 57May 20, 2018 6:52 AM

Cher's been singing so many decades that, when you click "show results" in the poll, it matches the Datalounge age spread.

by Anonymousreply 58May 20, 2018 7:18 AM

R58 Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves is winning

by Anonymousreply 59May 20, 2018 7:20 AM

Cher has never sounded great. She has the vibrato of a Yugo in bad need of a tune up, and is often flatter than Sonny after hitting that tree.

by Anonymousreply 60May 20, 2018 9:59 AM

I liked her from the beginning.
