Maybe he’s withholding rent because the landlord isn’t doing code required upkeep and repairs, etc.?

That’s legal in NY if you put the rent in a separate account, I believe.

^^ oh sorry, the link explains why. Who’d have [italic]thought?

Nearly $74k and counting. That's a huge sum of back rent to run up. There's no way either NYS and or federal programs are going to cover that much unpaid rent. For a start those programs only cover up to one year back rent, and that must be from a certain period within covid emergency.

$73,700? That's a lot of lettuce. So's this one:

"The housing court system is so backlogged that he expects to wait at least another year before the case is heard while Cowan continues to live in Sheha’s State Street building rent-free. "

I remember Madison from the first time he ever appeared on television.

He was on one of the very earliest episodes of Chopped, and he won.

Then he won the very first Chopped Champions competition.

From there, he became slightly famous.

But the thing I'll always remember about Madison is how on that very first episode of Chopped, he mentioned to the judges that he used to be homeless (just a few years earlier).

It was a nice redemption story at the time, but reading this story about how he is back on his rent, reminded me of his first Chopped appearance.

Sounds like he's back to his old ways.

Everyone is taking advantage of landlords in NYC and it is not just the poor.

by Anonymousreply 7April 18, 2022 11:37 AM

Classic deadbeat. Did the government give landlords any money when the evictions were curtailed or just tell them to suck it?

He rents a one bedroom?

I honestly thought he was making a lot of money. Guess not.

Food Network isn't going to take kindly to this story.

He has made numerous guest judge appearances on Beat Bobby Flay and other FN shows. But once this story gets out, I doubt that he will be asked back.

There are options that will remain open to him

Can you just refuse to pay rent in NYC?

by Anonymousreply 11April 18, 2022 12:03 PM

Well apparently you could during the eviction moratorium. Typical governmental incompetence. A system should have been set up for people to apply for rent abatement and they should have been required to prove they deserved it.

I don't see the problem here.
