Celery, YAY or HELL NO?

Writer Daniel Martin

Take my poll. I'm making it later today and have a bunch of celery I need to use.

Eat the celery while cooking, take one for your bloody.

Well, when they first made chili in Texas, or wherever, did they have celery around to fool around with? I think not.

by Anonymousreply 2December 3, 2022 9:09 PM

I'm not making Texas-style Chili (and am actually not a big fan of it either). My chili has lots of beans and vegetables in it, and going to have minimal meat in it.

[quote]and going to have minimal meat in it.

So ... just like your underwear.

It depends on what kind of chili one is making.

Anything works if it passes the chili taste test. And that means THE CHILI taste test. There's nothing wrong with soup or stew with ingredients like those often used in chili. But if it ain't chili, it's SPICED BEAN STEW WITH EGGPLANT, LEMON SLICES WITH GREEN OLIVES.

Don't call it chili if it ain't chili. And that's something beyond beans or not, beef or not, pork or not, cubed meat or ground meat or not, poultry or not, tomatoes or not, celery or not, bell pepper or not, hot or not, sweet or not, cumin or not, garlic or not, cinnamon/allspice/clove or not/not/not, or whatever or not.

What kind of bloated maggot doesn't make her own chili?

Well if you're not going to stick to any traditional recipe and are putting lots of vegetables in your chili, why are you making a big fucking deal about celery?

I assumed you were worried about adding celery to traditional chili, and if this would alter the traditional flavor. If not, what are you worried about? It sounds like you have everything but the kitchen sink in there, anyway. A little more celery probably wouldn't make much difference.

FFS what the hell is everyone's problem? I am making CHILI, WITH BEANS AND NOT A LOT OF MEAT. I am using all the spices you normally would use with chili, adding onions and probably some hatch green chilis and bell pepper as well.

My aim in asking about the celery is I'm wondering if the FLAVOR OF CELERY, in someone's opinion who has tried it in both ways, would meld well with the SPICES used in chili.

Never fucking mind.

So, spicy vegetable soup.

by Anonymousreply 10December 3, 2022 10:24 PM

Meaty chili, with grated cheddar cheese on top, yum.

by Anonymousreply 11December 3, 2022 10:26 PM

The thing is, you don't want our opinions. You want to make it with celery. And you're going to, anyway.

by Anonymousreply 12December 3, 2022 10:28 PM

It's not soup, as soup has a soupy consistency. My chili doesn't have a soupy consistency, it has a chunky consistency.

And no, r12, I have decided not to make it with celery, but you bitches had nothing to do with my decision.

Thanks for mutton.

by Anonymousreply 13December 3, 2022 10:32 PM

I have never seen chili with celery in it. That's weird

by Anonymousreply 15December 3, 2022 10:34 PM

Thanks, r15. I kind of thought so too. That's kind of why I asked.

by Anonymousreply 16December 3, 2022 10:38 PM

If you would have said sweet potato then yes that’s a good add. Celery no. Anyone try rhubarb?
