Capybaras as pets!

Writer Christopher Lucas

Something weird is happening on Reddit, it seems to be flooded with capybara content. They do make me happy watching them. Apparently, there’s a neighborhood in Argentina where the wealthy took their land and built high end homes on it, but they are coming back and reclaiming it.

R1, this has been done here before, and recurs cyclically. No idea why.

As I've posted before:

They mark everything with their feces and urine; like rabbits and guinea pigs, they practice π‘π‘’π‘π‘œπ‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘œπ‘β„Žπ‘¦ (they eat pellets of their own shit in order to reclaim nutrients). They bite. Males are frequently aggressive.

They're like sugar gliders in the sense that they cannot be separated from their primary caretakers; separation, even for a short period of time, causes them great anxiety. They will express their displeasure by shitting all over everything, and by biting. They are very, π‘£π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘¦ needy. Do not get a capybara unless you plan to give your entire life over to them, as have many owners. One capybara-owning couple, their carpeted home destroyed, ripped out all their carpeting and strewed the floor with hay, since this was the kind of environment the capybaras liked best.

Wanna live in a feces-strewn, smelly sty? Own a capybara.

Don't, people. Just π‘‘π‘œπ‘›'𝑑.

How big is their shit? That makes a difference. I do not want something that produces huge turds in my home

I went on a trip to the Amazon long before the internet - I was with a group of fellow interns with Save the Children in Bolivia/Peru. We saw huge capybara swimming along and didn't know what the hell it was and if it was safe to go near it. Most sentient beings in the Amazon want to bite you, eat you, kill you. One of my fellow travelers was rather impulsive (we were all young) and ran down and approached it. Luckily it was a mellow guy.
